Transnational Access
1. Project summary
In continuation of transnational user access programs funded under FP4 and FP5, AIM is devoted to
transnational European user access for application-oriented materials research and services using ion beams. It
will be open for scientific studies and for the implementation of ion beam technologies in industry. The
infrastructure offers a variety of devices for ion beam analysis and ion beam modification of solid surfaces,
embedded in a strong materials science environment, thus constituting a unique facility in Europe. Fields of
application cover R&D areas such as electronic and magnetic materials, biomaterials and polymers, and
materials which are resistant against mechanical wear or chemical attack all areas where ion beams act as
powerful nanotechnological tools.
The infrastructure combines 3 electrostatic accelerators with ion energies up to ~50 MeV, 3 ion implanters
providing ions at sub-keV to MeV energies, and devices for ion beam, plasma assisted thin film deposition and
plasma-based ion implantation and a focused ion beam apparatus. Partly unique special facilities include
simultaneous ion implantation from 2 accelerators, high resolution ion-beam analysis, and real-time, in-situ
process diagnostics by means of ion-beam analysis.
At least 250 shifts of each 8 hrs beam time will be offered to AIM Users annually. Users will be supported by
the scientific and technical staff of the infrastructure during planning, performance, evaluation and interpretation
of the experiments. Preferential access will be given to new Users of the infrastructure, projects involving young
scientists, and Users from countries where similar ion beam facilities are unavailable. Users from the new
member states and candidate states are expected to share are large fraction of the access being offere
