Caledonia. This description of the HMS Caledonia was found in August 2000 at the Bonhams Auction website. They had a
model of this ship, crafted about 1807, up for auction at that time. An image of the model was available on the site at that
time, however, is not now available.
"At the time of her completion the largest warship ever built for the Royal Navy and only the second vessel in the fleet to
mount 120 guns, HMS Caledonia was laid down in Plymouth Dockyard on 1st January 1805 and launched by Sir William
Rule - one of the Surveyors of the Navy and the man who had designed her - on Saturday, 25th June 1808. Originally ordered
as a 100-gun first rate but altered whilst on the stocks, her gundeck measured an impressive 205 feet in length, her beam was
a massive 54 1/2 feet in breadth and she displaced 4,596 tons. In every respect she was a magnificent fighting ship and, whit
the Napoleonic Wars still at their height, she was commissioned as soon as she was ready for sea with a complement of 866
men and boys. Caledonia saw her first taste of action in the spring of 1809 when as flagship to Admiral Lord Gambia, she
played a central role in the daring fireship attack on the French fleet lying in the Basque Roads, off St. Nazaire, on 11-12th
April. Although Lard Gambia was subsequently criticised for not pressing home his advantage to even greater effect, it was
nevertheless a notable victory and one from which his ship emerged with the reputation for reliability which stayed with her
throughout her long life. Despite the success of the Basque Roads operation, the blockade of France's ports continued year on
year and Caledonia was still on station of St. Nazaire when, on 24th February 1811, she was struck by lightning during a
severe storm. Even though only one man was seriouly hurt, her fore topmast split completely in half and her foremast was
also badly damaged necessitating a trip to Portsmouth where a new mast was fitted. When this work had been completed, she
became flagship to Admiral Sir Edward Pellew - later Lord Exmouth of Algiers fame - and with him went out to the
Mediterranean on a tour of duty lasting three years. Whilst there, she was flagship at the fall of Genoa on 18th April 1814
where several enemy warships, including the 74-gun Brilliant, were captured. Returning home that August when it appeared
that the war with France was finally at an end, she was laid up in Plymouth and not commissioned again until 1830. Used as
an experimental ship in 1831, she was then extensively refitted prior to serving two more terms as flagship in the
Mediterranean before being withdrawn from active service in the early 1850s. In 1856 she was fitted out to take the place of
the old Dreadnought seamen's Hospital Ship moored at Greenwich and the following year was renamed Dreadnought, not
only for the sake of continuity but also because the name of Caledonia was needed for a new ironclad then building at
Woolwich. Fulfilling the role of a floating infirmary until the hospital facility was moved ashore in 1873, she was then
deemed no longer worth saving or even hulking and was towed to Chatham where she was broke up early in 1875." He was

The Moray Weekley News 23 Feb 1878
"Sad Cash of Drowning" We regret to learn that Mr. W. West, chief boatman of the Coast Guard Station at Buckie, was
drowned on Friday. Mr. West and mrs. Gibbs, Customs House Officer, Buckie, were across at Kingston on some business.
Returning home about 6:30 PM having procured a boat from one of the ships which was moored at the mouth of the river
Spey they proceeded to cross the river at the Tugnet Ferry. When about the middle of the river, which was swollen at the
time, a rope which was mooring one of the ships and extended from side to side of the river was not observed by the
occupants of the boat until it struck Mr. West and knocked him out of the boat into the river. He was carried away so swiftly
by the current that Mr. Gibbs could render him no assistance. The body has not been recovered. Mr. West, whose sad death is
much regretted, leaves a widow and nine of a famly.

handed the job of sprucing up the city's old steam engine in March 1917. At left with Shirley Johnson, first paid driver of the
fire department, he is pictured with the results of his labor. Said the Advocate at the time, "Otto is justly proud of his
handwork on the old steam engine; under his magic touch it looks spic and span as a new engine." The editor also
commented that he would have liked to see the city trade the engine in on a new steam motor which would give Gilroy
apparatus "second to no town in the state." In 1916 the city purchased for $5, 000 an American La France engine which was
kept at Tice's garage until the firehouse was completed during the summer of 1916. Prior to the hiring of Johnson, only Chief
Babb, Bruce Scholfield, John Leon or Joe Maniero was permitted to drive the new engine. He died on May 2, 1947 in Los

Young Mother's Dealth Leaves Five Small Ones
Death at all times is sad, but the case of Mrs. Laverne Johnson Mohlar (sic), who passed away early Wednesday morning at
her home in Sunnybrook district, the blow is certainly a heavy one on the surviving husband who is left with five small
children, the youngest being a babe in arms only six months old, and the oldest ten years old. Mrs. Mohlar had waited on the
entire family who were down with the flue, and finally contracted the disease herself. She fell an easy victim. Her cousin,
Mrs. Lula Rohr was with her in her illness. mrs. Mohlar was the daughter of the late albert Johnson, and was born near Gilroy
29 years ago. Her life was a sad one. Her first husband deserted her with three small babies. She was only a child when she
married him. The second marriage proved happier, her husband providing for her wants and those of her children. She leaves
besides her own little family, a mother and several brothers and sisters.

PACHECO PASS ROAD
Katherine Moller, a 16 year old girl residing with her parents Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Moller in this city,
was killed when her car skidded on the Pacheco Pass Road near the Dexter place, Monday morning,
and collided with a heavy oil car of the Shell Oil Co., driven by Rodney Eschenburg. Miss Moller
was accompanied by Esther Giles of Hollister. Both cars were going east and in attempting to pass
the oil truck, Miss Moller's Dodge car side-swiped the truck and tipped over several times. Both
girls were brought to town immediately, but Miss Moller was beyond medical aid. Miss Giles was
not seriously injured. No blame is attached to Eschenburg. Corner Williams will hold an inquest as
soon as the Giles girl is able to tell her story.
The remains of Miss Moller were interred in the Masons and Odd Fellows cemetery on Thursday
afternoon. Services were held at Barshinger's chapel, and many friends followed the hearse to the
cemetery, where a beautiful array of floral pieces covered the grave. Much sympathy is expressed

When he found his wife kissing the landlord, the landlord ordered him out of his own home, william Benton Boggs, Morgan
Hill mechanic, charges in his divorce suit filed here yesterday against Mrs. mabel Corina Boggs.
He had gone out of the hosue to his landlord's car to tell his wife to come in and tend to one of their three children, who was
ill, he claims, when he saw his wife in the embrace of the landlord, not named by boggs in his divorce suit.
That was December 24, 1935, he says, and he separated from his wife at that time when the landlord ordered him off the
ranch where he and his wife were living.
Not only that, Boggs adds, but on numerous other times he had seen his wife kissing and in the embrace of the landlord, and
when he told her about it, she replied, "If you don't like it you can get off the ranch."
Mrs. Boggs also told him, he says, that she had only married him out of sympathy and not for love, and scratched him with
her fingernails and criticized his parents. Boggs is represented by Attorney Chesley M. Douglas.
