PART 1 GENERAL
1 .1 DESCRIPTION
A. The work of this section consists of construction of bituminous concrete surfaced walks.
1 .2 QUALITY ASSURANCE
A. Testing required to determine compliance for the work of this section will be the responsibility of
the contractor and at the contractor’s expense.
1 .3 PROJECT CONDITIONS
A. Apply bituminous material only when air temperature is 50 degrees F or higher; when trail or
walk surface is dry, free of frost, snow, or ice; and when precipitation is not imminent.
PART 2 PRODUCTS
2 .1 BED COURSE
A. Clean, hard, durable particles of crushed stone, natural or crushed gravel, and a filler of sand or
other finely divided mineral matter. All particles shall pass a 1-inch square mesh sieve and shall
be well-graded from coarse to fine to produce a dense, compacted base.
B. Make repairs as necessary after removal of existing asphalt.
2 .2 BITUMINOUS PRIME
A. AASHTO M 140, emulsified asphalt or AASHTO M 208, cationic emulsified asphalt, slow
setting, diluted in water, of suitable grade and consistency for application
2 .3 BITUMINOUS CONCRETE
A. Hot-Mix Asphalt: Dense, hot-laid, hot-mix asphalt plant mixes. Furnish job-mix formulas
pavement type, Trails Asphalt: Grading E (75) conforming to the requirements FHWA
Specifications. Mix aggregates and bituminous materials in accordance with the requirements of
FHWA Specifications. Use approved job mix formulas.
PART 3 EXECUTION
3 .1 SUBGRADE – not applicable
3 .2 AGGREGATE BASE
A. After saw cutting and removal of existing damaged asphalt, make repairs to the aggregate base as
follows: Spread aggregate uniformly to required thickness. Compact with approved rollers or
mechanical tampers to not less than 90 percent of the maximum dry density as determined by
AASHTO T180-74, Method C. Apply water as necessary. Surface of base aggregate shall be
true to line and grade with a dense, smooth finish, and shall be maintained in this condition until
application of bituminous material.
3 .3 FORMS – not applicable
3 .4 BITUMINOUS PRIME
A. Protect structures, trees, and vegetation adjacent to areas being treated. Apply with approved
distributor or by hand, using mechanical sprayers at an approximate rate of 0.20 gallon per square
yard. Allow the prime coat to penetrate and cure for a minimum of 24 hours before starting
3 .5 BITUMINOUS CONCRETE SURFACE
A. Immediately before placing bituminous concrete, sweep primed base, removing dirt and foreign
B. Temperature of bituminous concrete shall not be less than 225 degrees F at the time of placement.
C. Place bituminous concrete to obtain required compacted thickness. Roll surface with hand
operated or power roller. Acceptable density of the in-place bituminous concrete pavement shall
be 90 percent of the optimum values as determined from the job mix formula or 90 percent of a
standard specimen prepared from mix samples, taken at the laydown machine and processed in
accordance with Subsection 3.5 of AASHTO T245-82. Field density determinations will be made
in accordance with AASHTO T230-68.
D. The variation between any two contacts with the surface shall not exceed 1/4 inch in 10 feet.
Correct any bumps or depressions exceeding the specified tolerance by removing the defective
work and replacing with new material.
3 .6 FINISH GRADING
A. Grade edges and shoulders to match existing.
3 .7 CLEAN-UP
A. Upon completion of work, remove all rubbish and unused material. Leave the area in a neat,
clean, acceptable condition.
PART 4 MEASUREMENT AND PAYMENT
4 .1 BITUMINOUS WALKS
A. Measurement will be the number of square feet of specified width and actual length, measured
along the centerline of the walk. Payment will be made at the contract unit price.
