International Seminar and Workshop Climate Change UI
“Learning from Climate Change and its Consequences:
The Role of Scientists and Entrepreneurs”

Introduction
Global climate change as the unintended consequences of people’s interaction with their
habitat all over the world is indeed a significant influential phenomenon on people’s livelihood.
The sustainability of cultures and environment are threatened by the increased vulnerability
people have to face. The generation-to-generation of people’s adaptability to their habitat is
now at stake. People’s ignorance of the origins, causes, and consequences of the ongoing
process of climate change on their life and environment is only a part of the complex set of
factors influencing one another: politics, economics, power, ethics, environmental costs, law
and justice. Thus, it is high time now for scholars from various disciplines to pay serious
attention to and carry out careful examination on climate change and its consequences on the
greater risks and vulnerabilities people have to live with.
Scholars from interdisciplinary backgrounds—of social and natural sciences—from
Universitas Indonesia and other foreign universities/institutions (Australia and the
Netherlands) invite various parties: scientists, authorities, policy-makers, businessmen,
practitioners, and media to evaluate and to find more appropriate collaborative activities in
responding to climate change and its vulnerable implications. An interdisciplinary approach
is indeed necessary. A new paradigm is urgent. To seriously solve any unintended
vulnerabilities, however, the prominent agents in natural resource management, the business
entrepreneurs, in conjunction with those in authority should also play a more significant role.
The question is: how could we move forward collaboratively and appropriately in addressing
the issues and solving the problems? What are the most urgent issues to be examined further?
What are the best approaches, methodologies, and strategies to be developed?
An international seminar and workshop will be held to address those issues and problems.
Everybody are welcome to participate in the seminar and workshop on the 4th—5th of May
2010 at Universitas Indonesia, Depok entitled: “Learning from Climate Change and its
Consequences: The Role of Scientists and Entrepreneurs.” In one-day seminar on the 4th
of May 2010, a number of prominent scholars and entrepreneurs from Indonesia, Australia,
and the Netherlands will share their thought, ideas, research findings and experience in
examining the ongoing phenomena of climate change and its unintended consequences. What
lessons-learned can we gained from their studies? The workshop on the 5th of May 2010 is
intended to provide ―room‖ for intense discussion of the most urgent issues to be examined in
the near future with its approaches, methodologies, and frameworks in an interdisciplinary
and collaborative network. The outputs of this seminar and workshop are the publication of
proceedings and the designed proposals for further studies related with activities in
responding to climate change and its vulnerable implications.
