he more you know about a topic, the more interesting it becomes. Once you put a face on something, you become active in
preserving and nurturing it. Native plant identification is just such an activity. It encourages you to have a vested interest in
Relieving Medi- your surroundings, and helps you decide what trees to save or propagate. It helps you become aware of which plants are inva-
tation sive or should be removed from the landscape. It even gives you a reason to go out for a walk.
Credit Card Once you know the name of a plant, you can glean important information to help you decide if you should utilize it in your own
backyard. Many natives are beautiful additions, providing habitat for wildlife and requiring no special care. Note: natives often get
taller in their natural woodland settings than they do in cultivated gardens.
9 Cheap Ways to
Learning a plant‟s botanical name is not necessary, though the name is often descriptive and helps identify the plant. The “rubra”
part of the name Alnus rubra refers to the vibrant, red color the bark develops when bruised. The word
Home for Winter “alnifolia” in Amelanchier alnifolia refers to the alternate leaf arrangement of serviceberry foliage.
Common names are often confusing, as these names can change from area to area and from person to
person, especially over time.
Tree identification begins with dividing trees into three categories: those that lose their leaves
ISSUE: (deciduous), broad-leaf evergreens and conifers. Deciduous leaves are usually thin, papery and have a
matte finish. Examples include the native pacific dogwood (Cornus nuttallii) and vine maple (Acer
Recent News: 2 circinatum). Broad-leaf evergreens have somewhat thicker, glossier leaves. Madrone (Arbutus menziesii) is one of our few native
broadleaf evergreens, so that makes it easy to identify. Common conifers include western red cedar (Thuja plicata) and Douglas fir
Weeds! The next step in identification is to notice if the leaves are arranged in an alternate fashion or if they are opposite each other on the
stem. Dogwoods, alder and serviceberry all have an alternate leaf arrangement, while maples are paired-and-opposite. Bark, flowers,
Community 3 berries, seeds, size and growth habit are also useful in identifying trees.
Both Pacific dogwood and red alder have smooth, grayish bark. They both have oval leaves, but notice that the leaves of a dogwood
Cook’s 4 have wavy margins and curved veins and often turn red in the fall. The alder has prominent veins running outward to the toothed leaf
margins and can have a golden fall color. The dogwood has large white “flowers” and red fruits, and the alder has hanging catkins.
The dogwood, common in the under-story of the forest, can reach 60‟, and an alder can be even taller with a pyramid or dome-shape
crown. It has few lower branches, as it doesn‟t like shade.

How to Remove Weeds!
The good news is that improving lawn health by proper watering, mowing and fertilizing will greatly reduce weeds. If weeds are fairly minor
(rather than overtaking the grass) start by simply weeding by hand.
Still got weeds? Part of the solution is figuring out what's making weeds possible and changing things around so that weeds will face a tougher
time. Here's a quick tutorial on ways to keep weeds at bay:
If clover is taking over your lawn, there's a good chance your soil lacks nitrates which encourages grass growth. In fact the easiest way to control
clover is to promote healthy grass!
To remove clover:
Or If you have a reoccurring issue with clover:
1. first till the soil 1.Use a product called "strike three" which is a broadleaf
2. add compost to increase the soil's fertility herbicide. It consists of 3 active ingredients. There are many
3. Finish off by reseeding bare spots with grass. products available to home owners which would work well.
To prevent clover: 2.Be diligent through the growing season. It's not a hard weed
to kill, but new patches crop up quickly.
1. apply a slow-release organic lawn fertilizer in the fall
2. leave clippings on the grass during the summer.
To rid your lawn of dandelions, remove the flower heads before they go to seed. Dig out the roots with a dandelion weeder or use the Dandelion
Terminator. To prevent existing weed seeds from germinating, apply corn-gluten meal in early spring.
Mow your grass too low and you'll be doing crabgrass a favor. The low grass allows sun to reach the weed's seeds. To eradicate, completely re-
move plants before they go to seed and then sow grass seed. You can prevent crabgrass by allowing your lawn to stand tall at three inches. You'll
need to keep removing weeds from the reseeded spots to allow the new grass to become established.

A stretch of Novelty Hill Road, east of Redmond, is one of two road corridors in East and Southeast areas of
King County that will receive traffic safety improvements because of federal funding from the Rural Safety
Innovation Program (RSIP).
The grant will provide 80 percent of the funding to complete the improvements on Novelty Hill Road from the
vicinity east of Redmond Ridge down to West Snoqualmie Valley Road Northeast (near Duvall).
The county’s goal with this RSIP funds on Novelty Hill Road, is to reduce collisions in the af-
fected area by at least 30 percent. To achieve that, they’ll introduce ways to remind drivers to
