Choosing the RIGHT Foundation Shade For YOU!
Foundation: Choosing the Right Color Get the color right. The number one time-waster is having the wrong color to begin with. Want to make sure you have the right shade? Try these two tricks first to save valuable time. First, take your foundation of choice, and apply on a piece of white paper. Great to do at the makeup counter before you hand over your hard earned cash. What are you looking for? The actual color really. Against white, you can actually see the undertone of the foundation. Do you see yellow? Pink? Orange? Red? Green? (Yes, green.) If foundations tend to turn color on you, THIS is the color it will turn. Can't get a foundation to blend in right? It's because THIS color is interfering with your own skin color. By seeing it on white paper, you'll be able to make a more educated choice. Best bet? Go for the soft yellow undertones. Not only will you match your skintone better, you'll get the added bonus of calming down the pink/red tones in your skin as well. Just make sure that the yellow tones are soft....you can also run in to the opposite problem of it being TOO yellow, and you'll end up looking like a yellow squash. Just like too much pink, too much yellow can be a bad thing too. Okay, you think you got a sure thing, now on to the second test. Try it on. On a clean jawline, apply a small dime sized dab along the side. I repeat, dime-sized. See how fast it takes to blend the edges of the foundation into the skin. The edges, not the center. You want it to disappear in 1-3 strokes. The key is in how fast. The FASTER it blends.. the BETTER the choice it is for YOU! Any foundation will blend in if you sit there and work it long enough.
Choosing A Foundation
Ever wonder how today's models and movie stars achieve their beautiful, seemingly flawless faces? They know one of the best-kept secrets to "creating" beauty: Build from the ground up. In the world of makeup and "face design," that means choosing the right foundation and perfecting your application technique. The importance of foundation cannot be underestimated. It's the "unsung" hero of makeup - the simple backdrop that creates "tone," hides imperfections and brings together all the other makeup "elements." That said, how does one choose - and properly apply - the right foundation? Please read on. --Peter Lamas
There are two basic steps to choosing the right foundation - determining which type of foundation is right for your skin type -- liquid, cream, compact, stick or tinted moisturizer - and then choosing the right color.
Five Types of Foundation
Choosing the right type of foundation has a lot to do with a person's skin type -- dry, oily or normal - and a little to do with preference. The following guidelines will help you choose the type that's right for you:
Liquid foundations are the most versatile type of foundation, suitable for a full range of skin types. They blend easily, are available in varying degrees of coverage and often feature moisturizers in their dry-skin versions. Most liquid foundations are water-based, although some are oil-based.
Cream foundations are known for their heavier coverage and more intense moisturizing properties, making them ideal for normal, dry (and especially extra-dry) skin. A word of caution, however:
They're often oil-based and should be avoided by those with a tendency toward breakouts.
Compact foundations are ideal for on-the-go women who can't be bothered with cumbersome bottles and jars. Especially suitable for oily and normal skin types, compact foundations deliver a light, sheer matte coverage when applied with a dry sponge and a heavier matte coverage when applied with a wet sponge.
Stick foundations seem wonderfully reminiscent of crayons -- Just "color" in your face and you're ready to go! -- but unfortunately, application isn't quite so simple. Although stick foundations, which are best suited for normal skin, offer the convenience of a built-in concealer, their heavier texture requires skillful blending with a moistened sponge.
Tinted moisturizer foundations offer the lightest coverage available, delivering a sheer, healthy glow to the wearer. Like liquid foundations, they're ideal for a full range of skin types. Their moisturizing properties help protect against the dry skin that comes from over-exposure to the wind, sun and other outdoor elements, and as an added bonus, they often come with SPF protection.
Dewy or Matte?
One of the most common makeup questions asked by women is whether to use a dewy or matte type of foundation finish. Although these two finishes are often positioned as "fashion" statements, the simple truth is that each is most suitable for various types of skin. While matte finishes are ideal for all types of skin, they are especially suited for oilier skin, because they help counteract and control the oil that causes undesirable sheen and shine. One possible exception is during the winter months, when the air is often dryer and oiliness is less of a problem. The use of dewy finishes should be limited mostly to non-oily skin types, which are not as susceptible to sheen and shine.
The "Color" of Perfect Foundation
Once you've determined the right type of foundation for your skin type, you're ready to choose the right color, or tone. This is an area where a lot of women make one of their biggest beauty
mistakes. Fortunately, it doesn't have to be that way. There are several secrets to choosing wisely.
The Disappearing Act
It's important to remember that foundation is a "backdrop" to your makeup. It's meant to create the kind of "perfect" skin we see in all the fashion magazines. Its role is to blend away blemishes and create an even, flawless skin tone. It should do its job and simply "disappear" from sight. Perfect foundation should be indistinguishable from perfect skin.
Color Me Natural
Foundation can only be perfect if it mimics the skin's natural tone -- which leads us to one of the most common mistakes made when choosing a foundation color: Choosing something other than a yellow-based tone, which is the only tone that's found in human skin. Although makeup companies are only too happy to sell foundations that feature pink, peach and orange tones, such products should be strictly avoided. For a perfect start to a beautiful face, only a yellow-based foundation will do.
In order to choose the perfect tone of foundation, it's necessary to view the tone in natural lighting. If you're applying the foundation in a department store, it's often possible to take a mirror over to a windowed area or an entranceway to see if it matches your skin tone and "disappears" from sight. Fluorescent and other types of artificial lighting can distort the way a color actually looks.
Taking the Test
There's only one way to see if a color is actually the right one for your skin tone -- and that's to put it on. The secret is to choose a color that most closely matches your neck and then swipe a little of the foundation onto your jawline, blending it gently into your skin. If it's the right color, it should "disappear," leaving behind only a smoother, more flawless finish.
In Part One we learned about how to decide on the right type and color of foundation. But that's only half the equation. Picking the right foundation doesn't insure the optimum result. Now comes the next crucial step: The application. Read on as we explore the ABCs of application!
Priming Your Face
One of the keys to flawless application is to start with a clean, well-moisturized face. While cleanliness cannot be underestimated, neither can the use of a moisturizer to make the skin soft and supple and prime it for the foundation, which goes on more smoothly and adheres better when used over a moisturizer.
Creating an Even Application
Many women make the mistake of applying their foundation haphazardly, not realizing that they're creating blotchy, uneven areas on the surface of their face that appear after the foundation sets. To avoid this problem, dot the foundation sparingly on one side of the face only, and begin blending by using a smooth, circular motion, and then lightly patting the newly applied foundation with a makeup sponge, working from the top of the face downward, to create a smooth, even finish. (The top-to-bottom patting pattern also helps lay to rest tiny facial hairs, thus helping ensure a smooth, more finished surface.) Repeat the procedure on the opposite side of the face. Special attention should be given to the hairline and jawline, where the foundation should disappear into the skin to avoid any lines of demarcation. Fingertips and sponges are the two most common "tools" for application, with fingertips suitable for cream foundations (sponges absorb too much cream to be efficient), sponges suitable for compact and stick foundations, and both suitable for liquid and tinted moisturizer foundations.
Using a Concealed Weapon
Another important weapon in the foundation arsenal is the concealer, which is applied after the foundation to fade away undereye circles, blemishes, undesirable freckles or birthmarks that insist on peeking through. Concealers can be applied with the fingertips (clean, of course!), a wedge-shaped makeup sponge, or a small, slightly pointed or square makeup brush. Proper application is easy, but requires a little patience and control: The key is to apply in a gentle, dabbing motion called stippling, and to continue doing so until the concealer is completely blended into the target area.
It's always best to apply a concealer after the foundation in order to avoid smearing the concealer during the foundation's application. The rules are switched when it comes to tinted moisturizers, which should be applied after the concealer. Another word on concealers: Like foundations, they come in a variety of tones. To choose the one that's best for you, make sure it's half-a-shade lighter than your natural skin tone. Concealers are also available in color-correcting tones: yellow, green and mauve. Yellow cancels out the bluish-purple tones responsible for undereye circles; green cancels out the redness found in acne scars, blemishes and birthmarks; and mauve counteracts overly yellow skin tones.
Setting the Foundation
Once the foundation is applied, it's time to "set" it with a light dusting of powder. To do this, use a powder puff or a compact pad to apply either a loose or pressed powder to the face by lightly pressing the powder onto the face. You can even extend the powder to the upper part of the neck. Once the entire face has been powdered, take a large fluffy sable (or other type of natural bristle) brush that hasn't been dipped in powder and use it to blend and remove any loose or excess powder that's been left behind. To do this, you'll want to start at the forehead and brush from leftto-right in wide sweeps, downward, across the face. For a lighter "setting" option -- which may be more popular with teens and 20-year-olds -- forego the powder application via the powder puff and compact and simply dip a large, fluffy brush in powder and apply, using the same left-to-right, brushing pattern as described above. Should you decide to do this, however, it's necessary to tap the brush against your wrist once or twice after dipping to shake off any excess powder before applying.
A More Beautiful You
Once you've determined the foundation type that's right for you, chosen the most natural-looking color, and applied your foundation flawlessly, you're on your way to creating one of your most beautiful faces yet. Soon others will be asking you for the secret to your beautiful, seemingly flawless face. Just tell them that . . It all starts by building from the ground up!
Choosing the Best Mascara For Your Eyelashes
Whether you are going for all-out glamor or girl-next-door gorgeous, a coat or two of mascara will work wonders for bringing out your beautiful eyes and long lashes. If you don't regularly wear makeup, you may want to consider these questions before selecting mascara from among countless brands and styles. What type of eyelashes do I have? Are they long, curly, thick, thin, short, just right? Once you answer this question, you can learn what positives your lashes have going for them and what element could be easily enhanced with the right kind of mascara. Shorter lashes could lash out with a length enhancing type of mascara. Thinner lashes will become fuller with a thickening formula and longer lashes will really benefit from curling mascara. What will look best with my complexion? What will complement my outfit and wardrobe in general? Mascaras are available in a wide range of colors and styles, from blackest black and dark brown to lighter shades of both, or even fun colors like blues and greens. Most times black and brown hues are most appropriate and work well with any skin tone, eye color and choice of wardrobe. Do I plan to go swimming? Is there a chance I might cry, or laugh so hard that I cry? Am I going to take a quick shower at some point and hope to avoid re-doing my makeup entirely? If you answered yes to any of these questions, waterproof mascara is the way to go! Great for preventing soppy scenes at sad movies or emotional times - weddings, graduations and the like, waterproof mascara can save the day, or at least your face. Available most often in shades of black and brown, this type of mascara can be difficult to remove unless you have a makeup remover that is capable of gently washing away water resistant makeup. Do you cringe at the thought of that archaic metal eyelash curler getting within a foot of your face? If so, you will want to keep an eye out for mascara that has a curling element to it. Sometimes these products come with multiple characteristics, like thickening or lengthening aspects as well. First determine your needs and then seek out mascara that will satisfy them.
Do you feel that your eyelashes are very blonde or not so noticeable? Do you often feel like you have to glob a lot makeup onto them just to make them stand out? If this problem seems to haunt you, try a lash thickening mascara, or possibly one that lengthens and thickens. A thicker formula will be better for your lashes than a product that cakes on layer after layer. Even if your eyelashes are still a bit subtle, you can always further accent your eyes with eyeliner and darker eye shadows. If you still seem to have trouble making your eyes more defined, consider checking into fake eyelashes for special occasions.
No matter which mascara suits you best, remember to pair it with a pretty shadow and eyeliner if you so desire. To prevent smudges on your pillows and bits of makeup irritating your eyes overnight, remember to remove mascara and other makeup with a gentle cleanser before bed.
Choosing a Concealor
Offering more coverage than a
foundation, concealer is ideal for camouflaging facial imperfections. It will neutralize and balance the look of a blemish and those dreaded under-eye circles.
1: Consider concealers that are one to two shades lighter than your skin tone. Remember that the idea is to make a darker spot blend into your complexion. 2: Select a concealer most appropriate for the area you wish to cover. A creamier version is recommended for the delicate under-eye area, while a drier formula is better suited to other facial skin. 3: Test variations of a yellow-based concealer, since white, green and pink concealers can leave you with colored rather than concealed imperfections. 4: Sample a few versions. Consult with makeup artists from a few lines and request a sample to try. When purchasing from a drugstore, ensure that you can return any item that doesn't complement your coloring.
Tips & Warnings
Concealer may be all you need to balance out your complexion. Many women forego the foundation, set their concealer with powder and head out!
Go a shade darker during the summer months, when you have a little more color to your skin
Choosing The Correct Eye Shadow For YOUR Eyes! Your eyes
are the windows to your soul. Make them come alive with a touch of shadow on the lids. How To Choose: 1. Shop for shades that complement your skin and eye color. Look for colors that softly contrast with the shade of your eyes - not colors that match them exactly. 2. Choose simple, natural shades. If you opt for bright or trendy colors, be careful; they can look unnatural unless balanced with other suitable tones, and may go out of style as fast as they came in. 3. Buy colors that blend well together. You want your eyes to attract the attention, not any marked lines caused by your shadow. 4. Keep in mind that dark colors will minimize your eyes, while light shades will make them stand out. 5. Consider soft browns and tans with sandy or pink undertones for blue eyes. 6. Wear khaki and brown shades with yellow undertones for green eyes. 7. Accent dark brown and black eyes with brown and charcoal shadows. 8. Experiment. Head to a department store's cosmetic counter and have your eyes made up by a professional. Ask for color combinations that could work for day and evening.
Tips & Warnings
A little color goes a long way. Begin with a little shadow, and gradually increase it to find the amount that flatters you the most. Shadow can look a lot darker in its palette, so don't let color intensity keep you from trying a shade you like. If you experiment with bright shadows, use them as a wash over the eyelids to add a hint of color.
Shadow may irritate your eyes, especially if you wear contact lenses. Tap excess powder from the applicator before applying.
Choosing A Lipstick Color
Lipstick can be subtle,
glamorous or flirty, adding the final touch to your day or evening makeup.
1: Choose a color that complements the natural shade of your lips and skin. Plums, wines and deep reds flatter a dark skin tone, while light-brown beiges with pink or orange undertones complement a lighter skin tone. Olive skin looks good with brownish reds, light browns and raisin shades of lipstick. 2: Keep colors lighter for daytime and darker for night. Matte and cream finishes offer a subtler daytime look, while a high-gloss finish adds glamour for evening. A sheer, natural-looking color with a little shine also works well for day. 3: Experiment. Head to your local department store and ask a makeup artist to test different shades on your lips. Whenever possible, check in natural light to see how the color really looks with your complexion. 4: Create your own shade by combining colors. If the shades you find don't completely satisfy you, mix your own color. The easiest way to do this is by applying each color to your lips with a lip brush, then blending with the brush on your lips. 5: Opt for a lip liner that is a shade darker than your lipstick and in the same color family. 6: Line lips after applying lipstick, not before. That way you won't end up with a dark circle of lip liner after your lipstick has worn off.
Tips & Warnings
Try a colored gloss or lip tint for a sheer hint of lip color. Buy the colors that look good on you'not the ones that look good in the tube.
Deep or bold lip color complements light eye makeup, while light or nude lipstick flatters heavy eye makeup.
Choosing The RIGHT Lipstick
Q. How do I choose the
A. When choosing a lipstick think about texture and color. A single shade can look very different in different textures. - Matte means dense color, no shine and very little moisture. - Cream delivers strong color with moisture. - Gloss is translucent color, moist and shiny. - Stain looks very dark in the tube but goes on sheer. - Frosted colors contain sparkly white and are generally more suited to youthful complexions. Q. Define how some Avon lipsticks perform. - Long-wearing or "transfer-resistant" lipsticks, such as Avon's Perfect Wear is specially formulated with a bonding complex so rich that the high-volume color stays on, even while kissing. - 24-hour moisture and lush shine, available in new Brilliant Moisture Lip Color and Ultra Color Rich Lipstick both formulated with Intuitive Technology that reads your lips and self-adjusts the creamy richness especially for you. - Day-to-night wear, miraculous all day moisture and superior shine that stays true are the benefits of Avon’s new My Lip Miracle Lip Color. Q. How do I properly apply lipstick and lip liner? A. Lip liner is optional but if used, it should go on first. Use neutral or lipstick-matched lip liner. Using a liner that is darker than the lipstick will leave an outline when the lipstick fades. - Starting at the center of the upper lip, draw a line to each outer corner, following the edge of the natural lip line. - Fill in color all over lips if they want extra holding power for their lipstick. *Hint: Chill lip pencil in the refrigerator for a few minutes to make sharpening easier.
- Use a dusting of powder or bit of foundation beneath lipstick to maximize its staying power. Either can dry lips, so tell your Customers to use a creamy formula lipstick. - Stretch your lips, and starting at the center of top or bottom, glide color to corners. Blot, reapply and blot again for longer-lasting color. * Hint: A lip brush gives the most precision in applying lipstick
Q. How do I minimize my lips? A. - Use deep, matte shades to make lips. Don’t use glosses and frosts. - Line lips just inside the natural lip line with a freshly sharpened pencil that matches the lipstick. Be sure to define all the way to each corner. - Fill in lipstick with a lip brush. * Hint: A thin dusting of powder over lipstick can help play down lips
Q. How do I make my lips look fuller? A. - Don’t wear dark lip color. Glossy, pale, light-catching and white-tinged shades make lips look fuller. - Line lips at their outermost edge with a freshly sharpened neutral pencil or one that matches the lipstick. Be sure to define lips from corner to corner. - Fill in lips with lipstick using a lip brush. Apply a touch of a slightly lighter frosted or opalescent shade in the center of your lips. This enhances fullness by creating a light-catching contour. - Add a sweep of gloss if lipstick is matte.
Choosing The RIGHT Powder Color
powder sets your makeup, creating a smooth, shine-free and even complexion. For a natural and flawless finish, select colors that match your skin tone or foundation as closely as possible.
1: Make sure your foundation, if you wear any, disappears as you blend it into your skin. Powder can either complement the perfect foundation color or serve to neutralize any slight color imbalance. 2: Head to a department store counter and talk to a veteran beauty consultant. Bring your foundation along, or go with freshly applied foundation so you can test powder colors over your everyday makeup . 3: Start with colors that match your skin tone. You may be inundated with pink, yellow, green and purple shades all designed to make your skin look its best. Stick to what you feel comfortable with and what you can see makes your skin look good. 4: Check the colors you test in good lighting, or step outside to consider your options in natural light. You're looking for a color that blends with your skin, rather than sitting on top of it. 5: Remember that translucent powder still has color in it. Some may advise that this is the most natural option, but it may render you pale or pasty.
Tips & Warnings
Loose powder sets your makeup in the morning; pressed powder is for daily touchups. Pressed powder may seem darker because it's packed more densely. Test all colors before buying. Bring a trusted companion along for an honest second opinion
Applying Your Makeup In 10 Easy Steps Try to follow the same basic
routine whenever you apply your makeup. That way, the steps to looking your best will be more organized and efficient.
Apply a concealer that is one shade lighter than your foundation. Dot it on over any blemishes or under-eye circles and blend with your fingertips or a makeup sponge. If your concealer tends to cake, apply eye cream first.
Choose foundation that matches your skin tone exactly. Apply it in dots over the central part of
your face, then blend it out with a makeup sponge or your fingertips until it covers your entire face.
Use a loose or pressed powder to keep foundation and concealer on longer. Use pressed powder to touch up when you're away from home.
Do your eyebrows next. Use powdered eyebrow shadow on brows instead of pencil, which can often look unnatural. Apply it with a hard, slanted brush.
Choose three colors of eye shadow: light, medium and dark. Use the dark only to line your upper eyelid, in a fairly thin line along the upper lashes. Use the medium shade for the crease and the lightest shade for the area under the eyebrow. There are many variations on eye shadow application techniques.
Apply eyeliner. Use a cake eyeliner with a damp, thin liner brush, or an eyeliner pencil, and line the lower lid below the lashes. Line only the outer two-thirds of the lower lid, or all the way across if you're trying to achieve a darker look. Line all the way across the upper lid (just above the lash line and as close to the lashes as possible), or start the line where your lashes begin.
Apply mascara to upper and lower lashes, in two thin coats to avoid clumpiness. Choose brown mascara if your coloring is fair; black or brown-black works well for darker coloring. Or try a colored mascara such as navy or plum for fun, but don't go too bright if you want to be taken seriously.
Smile to find the apples of your cheeks, and apply blush to the apples or below, whichever you prefer. If you have to blend in blush, it's too bright.
Choose a lipstick color that's suited to your skin tone and that's perfect for your day look. You can mix colors and textures to suit your moods and your outfits.
Line lips after applying lipstick, not before. That way you won't end up with a dark circle of lip liner after your lipstick has worn off. Avoid combining very dark lip liner and pale lipstick.
Tips & Warnings Follow the steps in the order given, and remember to clean and moisturize your face before applying makeup.
Choose brighter or darker tones for a stronger look.
Clean makeup brushes by gently washing them in warm water and mild gel shampoo. Air-dry them overnight.
Don't skimp on makeup tools. High-quality tools make application easier and faster.
If you decide to curl your eyelashes, do this just before applying mascara' never after. Insert your eyelashes into the curler, squeeze just once, and hold for a few seconds.
Bacteria can grow in older cosmetics, which can lead to infections. Be on the safe side: Toss anything that's seems old, especially mascara, and avoid sharing products with others.
How To Apply - Foundation
apply, the longer it will last, and better it will look”.
Don’t forget “the less you
How to apply: Dab three dots on each cheek, two on the forehead, one on the nose and one on the chin. Then blend foundation all over the face in long, even strokes down the neck, up to the hairline. Use your fingers or sponge to apply. The following is from an article written by Professional Makeup artist Elke Von Freudenberg The one thing I like the least, whether it's applying on a model, or on myself, is foundation application. Why? One, you have to get the perfect match on the first try (even more so in photography) and two, it just takes too darn long to apply. The best time saver? A foundation brush. A great one to try is from The Body Shop (actually named "Foundation Brush"
in their catalog and stores nationwide). Or try a short round chisel cut blush brush. Just make sure that the hairs are short, soft and chisel cut (i.e. not blunt cut on the ends). To apply, just pick up with the brush, foundation from the back of your hand, and brush down along the center of the face. Then blend outwards with your brush. By applying with a brush, you get exactly the right amount on every time, superb blending, it feels great on your skin, and it's quick. You can easily apply foundation alone in 2-4 minutes. A life saver.
Why does this look different?
Understand that the technique you use to apply your foundation, changes the look of it. Pure and simple. So if you're expecting your heavy coverage foundation to cover everything when you're applying it with a sponge, it's ain't going to happen. Why? Your technique was wrong. Below, we'll clarify the various techniques.
Foundation: Application Techniques
There's only so many ways to apply foundation, so let's clarify the three main techniques: 1. Applying with your fingers Applying with your fingers, allows your foundation to 'blend' into your skin for a more natural look. Why? The heat of your hand makes the foundation melt in more and your foundation will look more like skin. Have a too heavy foundation? Apply with your fingers and blend. Fingers also give you the luxury of applying EXACTLY where you want it. Need better coverage? Dab on with a finger and tap. Don't blend, it'll come right off. By tapping, you're pressing the
foundation right where you need it.
2. Applying with a sponge Does your foundation seem to not go on? The culprit could be your sponge. Sponges are great for absorbing, picking up, erasing. Especially foundation. It all goes into the sponge, and not on your face, especially if you use those 'go on like water' foundations. (You'll get better results using your fingers.) Sponges are great for heavy duty cream bases, stick foundations, and oil-based foundations. You get better control over those products. Otherwise, use sponges only to blend edges, take off too much product, or erase a product completely. Want a trick of the trade? Use your sponge to get creative with your foundations. Want a heavier coverage? Apply a dab of loose powder on the sponge first, then foundation, then apply. The loose powder will thicken up your base. Want to make a oil-based foundation less oily? Loose powder works here too to 'soak up' more oil before you apply. Want a summer tint? Dampen your sponge with sunscreen first, then foundation. You have your foundation tint with SPF. Want to make a thick stick or cream foundation thinner? Apply with a water-dampened sponge to create a see-through color. (Tip: A water dampened sponge isn't too friendly with the oil-based foundations. Oil and water don't mix unfortunately.) 3. Applying with a foundation brush Foundation brushes are getting a big plug lately, not because it's a hip new item, but because of the control you have when you use it. Foundation brushes don't soak up any product, and applies the product directly on the surface of the skin, as opposed to into your skin like your fingers. With this, you get better coverage, and you'll be apt to use less because it's not disappearing. And you can easily apply more as you need it,without a caking effect. Just like a mascara wand
makes mascara go on easier, so does a foundation brush. Want foundation to adhere better? Here's one of my favorite photography tricks. Dust a small amount of loose power lightly on clean or moisturized skin first. Then apply foundation as normal. You'll get less break through shine and your base will 'adhere' to the powder, for longer lasting wear. Great for oily skin as well.
Applying a tiny bit of powder (loose or pressed) before and
after applying your concealer helps it to set better, especially if you have oily skin. I do this under my eyes, where I have dark circles, and any where else where I may have a blemish. After doing this, apply foundation as you normally would. Don't forget to always use your moisturizer before applying any makeup to the face. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ What is the best way to camouflage a blemish without looking like I've piled on a ton of makeup? We put this one to renowned makeup artist Vincent Longo, who told us the key to a good cover-up is choosing the right color. First, choose a concealer base that matches your skin tone. Avoid using a color lighter than your skin tone because it will only draw more attention to the problem area. Once you have the right color, apply the concealer by dabbing just a little of the product onto the center of the pimple, then blending it outwards towards the edges and into the skin. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I always have dark circles under my eyes. Is there anything that I can do? They say the eyes are the windows of the soul. The undereye area reflects both your lifestyle and heredity. If your circles come and go, they are likely a product of your environment and lifestyle - too much alcohol or too little sleep are common culprits. The good news is that often cremes and gels infused with vitamins and botanicals can help to soothe and diminish temporary darkness. Hereditary circles, on the other hand, are more
challenging. Many new products claim to banish hereditary darkness, but consumer feedback is varied and the medical community is not promoting a particular ingredient yet. According to Dr. Kathy Fields, vitamin K is currently being studied and may prove to be of benefit. Until then, ladies, concealer may be your best friend (aside from mascara, that is)!
If you're absolutely certain you don't love your
unique distinguishing marks, experiment with these tips and techniques.
1: Try over-the-counter bleaching agents to lighten the freckles you've already earned, but know that you can't erase them entirely. 2: Apply tinted moisturizer or foundation, if you prefer light coverage, in a shade slightly darker than your natural skin tone to blend in and downplay your freckles. 3: Slather on sunblock with an SPF rating of 15 or higher every time you go outside, even in cloudy or overcast weather. As your skin tans, so do your freckles. Self-tanners will make your skin appear darker, but they will also darken your freckles. 4: Talk to a dermatologist if you want to try stronger measures intended to eliminate freckles. Ask about the pros and cons of acid or chemical peels, lasers and various bleaching agents available only by prescription.
Tips & Warnings
Protect your skin from sun to avoid a new crop of freckles. Freckles are inherited; limiting your sun exposure is the only way to prevent them. That's why you probably don't have any freckles on your derriere.
Tips - Mascara
I have SEVERAL articles posted below... with some
AWESOME tips.. Make SURE you read them ALL. They were a GREAT addition to my OWN
knowledge on Mascara & Application!
How to curl, tint, and lengthen
© Trevy Thomas Wearing mascara is a necessary evil. With a few tips, applying mascara will transform your stubby eyelashes to long, lush beauties, just like the rest of you. If you weren't blessed with long dark lashes, you probably rely on your mascara as much as some people do their glasses. All the shadow and lipstick in the world won't make you look awake until you apply mascara. It is also one of the weirdest makeup products because it's sort of like brushing on tar. I'm still waiting for the day when a cosmetic company figures out how to make lash paint that doesn't look and feel like dried glue. As you can tell, I'm one of the girls who has pale stubby lashes and has to deal with mascara on a daily basis. It's a love-hate relationship. I've found a few tricks over the years to make applying mascara a more tolerable experience: Use a lash curler first. It'll make the process a lot faster, and you won't have to use as much. Avoid colored mascara unless you're going for a techno look. Blot the end of the wand on a tissue (not the tube) to clean off excess. This helps keep clumps off your lashes. Apply to the upper lashes of one eye from base to end repeatedly, building on the ends, until you've got the right look. Then recoat the wand and switch to the other eye. Do the bottom lashes last holding your wand in a vertical position. Use waterproof if there's any chance of a shower, swim or tearful moment in your immediate future. Nothing worse than raccoon eyes. Remove every night (and I mean every night) with a proper makeup remover. That's about it. Of course, you'll have to try every mascara made before you find one you like.
BY Melissa Milrad Goldstein Any woman who doesn't crave long, beautiful lashes was probably lucky enough to be to born with them. Those of us who are less fortunate fake it with a great mascara and some tried-and-true application expertise.
Mascara is makeup's little black dress -- it looks great on every woman and adds a touch of drama to holiday style. "Consider two things when choosing your mascara," says Darac, the director of artistic development at Prescriptives. "First, are you looking for a mascara that gives a subtle effect or one that's va-voom? A gel-based formula will enhance your lashes, whereas a thickening formula will make them look more dramatic and voluptuous." Second, consider color: A true black brightens the eye area. "But not all blacks are black," explains Darac. "Swipe the mascara on the back of your hand to see its actual color. Many shades that call themselves black are really bluish-gray."
"I never leave my house without curled lashes," says celebrity makeup artist Mally Roncal. "It's an instant eye lift." On bare lashes only, position an eyelash curler (Shu Uemura's is a favorite of most makeup artists) close to the lash line and -- gently -- crimp lashes, "walking" the eyelash curler out and crimping again. Be sure to exercise caution: Overenthusiastic curling will irreparably damage lashes. Wipe the curler clean with makeup remover after each use.
Now take out the mascara wand and roll it on a tissue to remove any excess product.
Don't pump the wand in the tube -- you'll introduce air and dry out the mascara. Hold the wand at the base of the lashes, give the wand a wiggle and pull it through the lashes. Build volume with several thin layers rather than a single gloppy one. Clumps? Comb them out with a metal eyelash comb or a disposable plastic wand. Skip the mascara on your bottom lashes; it isn't very modern and can leave you looking like a Kewpie doll.
More than meets the eye.
Subtly change your look with a sophisticated colored mascara in such shades as brown, navy or aubergine. Burgundies look especially great on redheads; browns complement strawberry-blond hair or blond lashes. "But, as the saying goes, never display emeralds on a green cloth," says Darac. That means blue-eyed women should not wear navy, nor should green-eyed girls use green shades.
Easy on the eyes.
Treat fragile lashes by rubbing a light hydrating eye cream onto them each night. Never lend anyone your mascara (you'll share bacteria and other germs), and don't wash the wand between uses.
Replace old mascara with a new one every three months.
Going to Great Lengths
Whether you'd like longer lashes or can't find a smudge-free brush, Bobbi has the best mascara choices for your eyes.
by Bobbi Brown
Back in college--when I pulled all-nighters--I learned that a swipe of mascara made me look wideawake the next day. Today, I still rely on it because, as a working mom, I sometimes skimp on sleep. On those day-afters, mascara quickly brightens and opens up my eyes. Once you see the results, you'll count on it every day.
LASH WISH: Fatten up flimsy lashes Best bet: Thickening formula Why it works: Waxes and films plump up each lash, and heavier pigments add definition. The wand's tightly packed bristles deposit extra color for a voluminous look. And--unlike big brushes, which can't reach the lash's base--short bristles sweep the entire lash length. A caution: A heavy consistency can clump, and thick layers may flake and smear. So use a light hand and flick on just one coat. If needed, separate lashes with a lash brush. LASH WISH: Dramatize short lashes Best bet: Lengthening formula Why it works: Fibers and buildable waxes cling together to elongate lashes. This thinner formula lays down sheer coats, so you can add another layer to enhance the illusion of length. Bristles-arranged farther apart in a spiraled pattern--help fan out lashes. For really striking eyes, apply to upper lashes from the underside going from root to tip. Then apply a second coat to the tips of the top outer third lashes. One caveat: Fiber-based mascaras may flake, irritating sensitive as well as contact lens wearers' eyes. LASH WISH: Smudge-free lashes Best bet: Waterproof formula Why it works: Sealants, which create a water-resistant border around each lash, help prevent smearing. Still, go easy on the eye cream because oily emollients can cause smudging. Dusting loose, yellow-toned face powder under your eyes will help prevent running. Because this formula can be drying, reserve it for special occasions such as weddings, or give your lashes a break every
few days. And if you have sensitive eyes, beware: It's harder to take off and requires an oil-based makeup remover. But it's less likely to irritate contact lens wearers' eyes because the particles break down more slowly and are less prone to flaking.
15 Mascara Tricks & Tips
by Julyne Derrick We've compiled a list of great mascara tips & tricks to share with you. Follow these & you'll save money, look prettier & your eyes will appear brighter & wider.
Tips & Techniques
Tip #1: How to use a lash comb. For some, lash combs are simply too fussy. But for some makeup artists, they're a great invention & keep lashes glob-free & perfectly separated. So how to use? Apply mascara at the lash base, wiggling the brush & then comb the mascara to the tips of your lashes. Not into the lash comb? Get rid of clumbs without them by removing excess mascara from the wand. Wipe wand on tissue, this eliminates blobs BEFORE you start. Tip #2: Try a clean mascara wand. Sweep a clean, fresh mascara wand through lashes when they're wet. Don't worry, you don't have to buy them. When you finish a mascara, clean the wand in a capful of eye makeup remover, then wash with soap & dry. Keep it clean by washing it whenever you wash your makeup tools. Tip #3: Don't shy away from colored mascara. Basic mascara rules are simple: Black works for everyone but blondes. Blondes should opt for brown/black by day & reserve black for night.
Blue mascara, however, can brighten blue eyes, purple mascara can make brown eyes pop. The most popular mascara sold in the US is Maybelline Great Lash mascara, a great buy at under $6. The company estimates 1 tube is sold every 1.6 seconds in the U.S. Tip #4: When applying mascara, wiggle the wand at the base of the lashes. It's the mascara placed near the roots (not the tips) that gives the illusion of length. Tip #5: Thin, short brushes are best. A thinner brush allows you to get into the corner of eyes. Short brushes give you more control. Tip #6: Give a few coats to the edges by blinking. Blink onto the brush to give ends an extra coat. Tip #7: Powder under the eye before applying mascara. Sometimes mascara smudges because it's attracted to oily concealer or eye creams. Tip #8: Use an eyelash curler BEFORE applying mascara. Curling lashes gives eyes the appearance of being wider & brighter. Shoot hot air from your blowdryer on the mascara curler for 3-5 seconds to warm it up before curling lashes. Touch it first to make sure it's not TOO hot. Shu Uemura makes the most popular eyelash curler on the market ($18-$22). Tip #9: Zig-zag the wand. Zig-zagging the wand back & forth during application helps cut down clumps. Tip #10: For a dramatic look, apply mascara only to the upper lashes. To make eyes seem wider, apply to the bottom, too. But make sure you give lashes a light touch. Not great at getting those bottom lashes? Try putting a tissue under them before application. Tip #11: Use a mascara primer. Primers coat lashes & separate them before you apply mascara. Makeup artists swear by this relatively new invention. Tip #12: Want that 2nd coat? Just make sure to do it before the first coat dries, otherwise you'll get clumps.
Tip #13: Do NOT pump wand in & out of the tube. This only introduces air into the tube, which will cause your mascara to dry out sooner than it should. Tip #14: Another smudge-proof tip -- bend the wand. A top makeup artist once gave his secret to his steady hand: he always bends his wand at a right angle. Tip #15: Wait 5 seconds before blinking. You don't want to paint your lids, do you
Make Your Mascara Last Longer
1: Choose a
mascara that has a thin brush, which means that the opening to the tube will be small and less air will get in. When air enters the tube, it dries out the mascara. 2: Avoid pumping the mascara wand too vigorously during use. This allows air to get into the tube. 3: Add one drop of water to the tube of dry mascara if necessary. It's not a great idea, but in an emergency, you will be able to get more out of the tube by using this trick.
Tips & Warnings
Make sure you only use the water trick on water-soluble mascaras, not waterproof mascaras. If you've had your mascara longer than 3 months, it is probably a good idea to replace it and start using these tricks with a new tube
Using FALSE Eyelashes
Go for glamour with false eyelashes.
Whether you apply a few singles to create a subtle change or full lashes for optimal drama, practice first'this is a tricky beauty enhancer.
1: Decide what look you're seeking. A full set of false eyelashes adds high drama to your evening appearance or returns the eyelashes that may have disappeared due to illness. Little clumps of fake
lashes on the outside corners of your eyes create a subtle, sophisticated glamour. 2: Choose a color that complements the occasion. For evening, stick to black (or dark brown if you have pale lashes), which adds drama without requiring mascara. In the daytime, go dark brown (light brown or blond if you have pale lashes) for a natural look. 3: Check their length. Full lashes should follow the natural line of your own lashes. Trim them with sharp scissors to accommodate your needs. 4: Begin with clean eyes, free of makeup or debris. 5: Hold the lashes in your hand and apply a very thin line of glue or adhesive along the base; let it sit for 1 minute. Begin with a minimal amount of glue, adding more if needed. 6: Look into a mirror, either on the wall or placed on a countertop. Apply the false lashes above your eyelashes, as close to your lash line as possible, following its natural curve. 7: Adjust the lashes with your fingertips, tweezers or a toothpick. 8: If you're using lash clumps, place them at the outside corners of your upper lashes (one or two per eye should suffice). Adjust their position with a toothpick, fingers or tweezers. 9: Apply eye makeup. You may find your new lashes dramatic enough without mascara, so take a good look in the mirror first. 10: Practice a few times before your debut. This is a challenging beauty trick to master, but a dress rehearsal should make for a smash opening.
Tips & Warnings
Remove false eyelashes before you go to bed, using a warm compress or makeup remover. After wearing full lashes, soak them in eyelash-cleaning solution until the next time you wear them. Never pull the lashes from your lids, as you may pull your own lashes out or rip your skin. Never apply glue directly to your eyelids; it may get into your eyes, or you may glue your eye shut.
Shape and define your eyes with eyeliner after
you've applied eye shadow and before applying mascara. Whether you choose a soft line or a dramatic stroke, eyeliner draws attention.
1: Choose an eyeliner appropriate for your eye color. Brown, navy and charcoal accent light eyes well, while brown and plum shades flatter brown eyes. Make sure your liner complements the color of your shadow. 2: Consider the type of look you're after. Pencil eyeliner gives your eyes soft definition, while liquid versions offer precision and drama. You can also moisten dark eye shadow and apply it with a small, flat brush. 3: Prepare a cake liner or a dark eye shadow by applying a small amount of water to your brush. Or, if you're using a pencil eyeliner, ensure that you've sharpened the pencil adequately. 4: Move the wet brush gently through your cake liner or dark shadow. Hold the brush or pencil as you would hold a pen. 5: Tilt your head back slightly and bring your eyes to a half-open state. This creates a good angle for application, while allowing you to see what you're doing. 6: Draw a line across the upper lid just above the lashes, from the inside corner to the outside corner of the eye. If you're using liquid liner, allow it to dry before opening your eyes all the way, or the color may transfer into the crease of your eye. 7: If you used a brush or a pencil, soften the look by gently smudging the line with your brush, a cotton swab or your finger. 8: Line the lower lids. Moving from the outside edge inward, draw a line on the outer two-thirds of the lid or more, depending on the look you're going for. Your line should be slightly thicker at the outside corner, becoming thinner as it moves in toward your nose. Using your brush or pencil, lightly stroke the area. If using a liquid liner, apply it in one smooth stroke. Apply less color so your eyes don't appear raccoonlike.
Tips & Warnings
You may find eyeliner, particularly the liquid version, difficult and messy the first few times. Practice and have patience. Wash brushes regularly with makeup remover or a mild gel shampoo. Lining the inside of the lower lid is not recommended'it may cause eye infections, and it greatly increases the risk of getting makeup in your eye.
Tips - Eye Shadow
Application on Entire Lid Instructions
Sweep a touch of shadow over your lids to accent
eyes. You can define them, add drama, and make them stand out in a few quick steps.
STEP 1: Prime the eyelids by dusting them with a small amount of loose powder. STEP 2: Select a light base shadow. Using a shadow brush, sweep it across your entire lid, from brow to lash line. STEP 3: Use a medium-toned shade to cover your lower lids. STEP 4: Contour the crease of your eyelid with a dark shade, using a smaller eye shadow brush. This color can also work as an eyeliner (see the next section for instructions). STEP 5: Blend shadow by stroking the lid gently with an eye shadow brush. Don't use your finger'you could wipe off the shadow entirely. STEP 6: Use a cosmetic puff and a little pressed powder to tone down heavy shadow. Shake any excess powder off the puff, then press it gently on your lid.
Eye Shadow to Line the Eyes Instructions
STEP 1: Choose a medium or dark shadow color to line your eyes. STEP 2: Use a small, flat, angled brush for the application. STEP 3: Stroke the brush over the eye shadow. STEP 4: Start at the inside edge of your upper lid. Angle the brush so that the longest tip follows the shorter end as the brush moves across your lash line. Bring the brush to the outer corner of the eye STEP 5: Create a more dramatic line by wetting the brush before stroking it through the shadow. Mist a small amount of water onto the brush, or dab it into a few drops of water and proceed with the line. The shadow may feel wet as you draw your line, but it will dry quickly.
Overall Tips & Warnings
Don't share eye makeup or tools'you can unknowingly transfer eye infections such as pinkeye (conjunctivitis). If you get shadow in your eyes, flush them gently with tepid water
Making Your Eyes Look Bigger
try these tricks: 1. Always curl lashes before applying mascara.
To get huge eyes
2. Don't forget your bottom lashes. For years I avoided mascara on them until a makeup expert showed me how much mascara on my lower lashes really make my eyes pop. I rarely go without now. 3. Individual false lashes are exotic, gorgeous and can look natural if applied correctly. 4. For a doe-eyed, seductive look, makeup artist *Paul Starr suggests you try lining your lower lids with a creamy white eye pencil. He likes Estee Lauder Artists's Eye Pencil in White Writer($18.50). 5. White liner may sound odd, but it really opens up the eye. You can also try putting it on the inside corner of both your upper and your lower lids.
6. Make sure your brows are manicured. Until you get your brows professionally waxed, tweezed or threaded, you won't realize how much they affect the rest of your face. Cleaning up your brow line of stray hairs, adding a slight arch and filling in sparse spots are key to making eyes look much larger. I find once you get a professional brow job, you can do it yourself for a few months using the pro job as a 'map' of where to tweeze. To keep brows in place, try a clear eyebrow gel like Maybelline Great Lash Clear Mascara or just spritz a bit of hairspray onto an old toothbrush and brush brows in perfect place.
*Tip from the December, 2005, issue of Harper's Bazaar magazine.
1: Select a color of blush that resembles the natural glow of
your cheeks after you exercise. Consider having a lighter color for day, and a darker tone for a more dramatic evening look. Keep your blush in the same color family as your lipstick. 2: Consider the type of blush best suited to your skin type. Cream blush works very well for drier skin, as it can help to keep skin hydrated. Powder blush is better suited to oily skin. 3: Complete the application of foundation, powder and all eye makeup before applying blush 4: Use a full, round brush for the application of your powder blush, as it will make for a softer and more professional look than the brush that comes with the blush. This should not be the same brush you use to apply your loose powder. 5: Place a small amount of blush on the brush and gently tap off any excess. Or, place a small amount of cream on your middle finger. 6: Look in the mirror and smile 7: Place powder blush on the apple of your cheek and gently brush up your cheekbone toward your hairline. Dot cream blush beginning at the apple, and gently blend up the cheekbone toward the hairline . 8: Focus your blush at the outside of your face near your hairline if you have a fuller face. For high cheekbones, concentrate blush in the center of your face to accentuate your bones. 9: Blend a little blush down your cheek for a little more natural, less dramatic look
Tips & Warnings
For rosier cheeks, consider gel or liquid tints. Wash your hands after use, as these products may stain the hands. Remember that the lighter your skin tone, the lighter your blush color should be. Wash brushes regularly with a makeup remover or nonsoap cleanser. Avoid following the underside of your cheekbones, which makes for an artificial and unbecoming look.
Perfect Fit Bra Guide
To help your Customer find her perfect fit, use this guide: While wearing a bra, wrap a tape measure snugly around your rib cage, directly under the bottom bra edge (see top picture at right). The tape should be snug, but not tight. ~ Now, add 5 (for example, if you measure 29", add 5 = size 34). ~ If you measure over 33", add 3 = size 36. If the total adds up to an odd number, such as 37, try the next size up (size 38). This is your bra number (32, 34, 36, etc.). To get your cup size, measure over the fullest part of the bust.
The difference between this measurement and the bra number is your cup size (see chart below):
½" = Nearly A Cup (NA)* 1" = A Cup 1-1 ½" = Nearly B Cup (NB)* 2" = B Cup 2-2 ½" = Nearly C Cup (NC)* 3" = C Cup 4" = D Cup 5" = DD Cup 6" = DDD Cup Example: Your bra number is 36 and your bust measurement is 38. Subtract 36 from 38 and you get a 2" difference. 2" = B cup. Therefore, your correct bra size is 36B
Did you know.....
that the average woman buys six bras a year? Now she can buy them from you. What are the advantages of buying bras from Avon? ~ She can shop in the privacy of her own home—no crowded stores, no searching through racks, no dealing with salespeople. ~ Different bras enhance different outfits. When she tries them on at home, she can try on different bras with all her key clothing to see which bras work with which clothes.

Your supporting role Not sure how to talk to your Customers about bras? Here are a few key points to get you started.
~ If you’re constantly pulling your straps up in the front to get better support, you need a new bra—or one that’s more supportive! ~ A bra should be level from front to back. Look in the mirror to see if it’s even. ~ Different bras enhance different outfits. It’s smart to try on a bra with the various styles in your closet to see which bras work with which clothes. ~ When you try on a bra, sit down to see if it digs into you or binds. ~ Straps should be adjusted to ensure that placement is midway between the shoulder and the bend in the elbow ~ The BAND of the bra is what provides 90% of your support! The straps only contribute about 10% ~ The larger busted the woman.. the wider the band and shoulder straps NEED to be, for proper support!
Applying Makeup To Look "Natural"
This system of applying makeup for a natural look is fast and easy when you get the hang of it.
1: Understand that a 'natural' look is one that uses colors that are right for your skin tone. How much you use, and where, depends on your personal style. 2: Make sure your concealer is yellow in tone since it mutes imperfections without adding color, giving your skin a natural look. 3: Apply foundation that matches your skin tone. The right foundation will seem to disappear on your face. If you are African-American, it's a good idea to have light, medium and dark shades of your foundation to allow for different gradations of color on different parts of your face. 4: Apply eye makeup in earthy tones'beige, brown, gold or plum for shadows and brown and charcoal gray for liner and mascara. Skip liner or shadow entirely if you want to keep makeup light. 5: Choose a blush color that is close to the color of your cheeks after you've exercised.
Tips & Warnings
Apply makeup in the order described in "eHow to Apply Makeup in 10 Easy Steps" (see Related eHows), and remember to clean and moisturize your face first. Choose brighter or darker tones for a stronger, more made-up look. Intensify your natural makeup for evening. Instead of brown, for example, go for charcoal around the eyes. 'Pop' blush with a brighter color over your usual one. Make lips brighter, darker or more shimmery. Don't skimp on makeup tools. Better tools make applying makeup easier and faster
Tips - Common Makeup Mistakes Some
Common Eye Makeup Mistakes
Eye makeup can be absolutely beautiful; it can change the entire appearance of your face from natural to dramatic to subtly elegant. However, it can also draw negative attention to your face if used incorrectly. Some of the most common problems that people have when applying eye makeup are:
• Cat-Woman’s eyes. Although it used to be quite trendy, the black liner swept up beyond the outside corners of the eyes is very outdated. It also makes the eyes look very severe and harsh.
• Possum eyes. No one wants small, beady eyes. In fact, a bunch of makeup tricks teach you how to make your eyes appear large and lovely. Yet people unknowingly choose to line only the outside half of the eyes (top and bottom), which minimizes them. • Conjunctivitis eyes. Many people use their blush as eye shadow. Unfortunately, this makes the whole eye appear red or pink and gives a sickly appearance rather than a pretty one.
• Mimi’s eyes. Crazily bright and mismatched colors belong on a clown’s face, not your eyes. Choose gentle colors (Even if they’re bold, they can still be chic.), and blend them.
• Spider eyes. Mascara clumps are always a problem (though in the ‘60’s they were popular); don’t settle with them! If your mascara is clumping, wife off the extra mascara from the brush and layer your lashes with a few thin coats.
• No eyes. It’s great to use shadow colors that will bring out your eyes; but it doesn’t work the way some people think – “blue will bring out blue”, etc. Actually, using the same color shadow as your eyes causes your eyes to disappear.

Ideas For Canvassing Businesses When approaching business during
business hours, make sure that you are dressed nicely, just as you would if you were coming for a
job interview. As in essence.. you ARE being interviewed.. as well as interviewing them. Canvassing after Hours Why not hang a book (or two) on their door when they are closed? Next morning (hopefully) there is your name! Perhaps you add an Intro Letter stating that you will be dropping by (or phoning) in a day or two to talk business with them. Leaving a book in the "Payment" slots.. or after hours drop boxes for payments, etc. is also an option. Drive-Through Sales In C-2, Sharon Mills of Leslie, GA sold about $200 worth of Avon just by picking up fast food. "I give a brochure to everyone I see," she says, "and that includes the people at the fast-food drivethrough." She slides the brochure through the little window, and, frequently, they slide back an order. Sometimes Sharon doesn't even have to offer. "Many times they just see the brochures on my dashboard and ask for one," she says. Apartment Complexes I also have a customer who works at an apartment complex...she puts my books in their welcome packs, and allows me to leave books in the office. Exchange advertising! Offer to include thier business card with all your orders for the next XX orders. OR Offer to include a flyer or business card with the next XXX books that you distribute. When they allow you to leave your books for them and their customers. Scratch their back, they scratch yours??? I leave my brochures at a downtown deli - been doing that for several years now. The deli is on their third owners. I bring in my dollar basket and tell the ladies that own the place they may pick so many items out of my basket each (there's always two ladies running it) - I state this is my way of thanking them for allowing me to leave my brochures for my customers to pick up. Doesn't hurt when my customers drop in at the same time and go wild seeing me there! Also doesn't hurt when those same customers say "I just had to run down here to get one of YOUR books!!!"
Estate Welcome Baskets
personal testimony from an Unknown Avon rep (NOT me, Heidi Butler) When my husband & I moved into our new home last year, I found this beautiful plant setting on
the counter in the kitchen w/ a beautiful card from Marge ( the real estate lady who helped us in finding and closing the sale on our new home ). The plant was a Thank You gift from her for using her service. So as I lay there in the dark this was the idea that I came up with. Why not visit the local Real Estate office's and offer them my service. Now I couldnt get to sleep my mind was working full speed lol I will skip the rest of the story and cut right to the chase. I spend one day EVERY week "friend finding " and this is what I did this past week. I wrote an introduction letter and explained the type of service I would like to offer. I marked the pages through out the brochure, suggesting item's that would make a great basket for the new home owner. I then placed this letter and a brochure in a 6 x 9 clasp envelope. (I made 75 of them ). I first went to Century 21, I asked the receptionist if there was a office manager that I could speak with. I explained to the office manager who I was and what I wanted. She said she loved the idea and would share any material that I had with the agents in there office. I asked the number of agent's and told her I had information for each of the agent's in my car. I came back armed w/ enough packet's for the 16 agents. Along w/ my FREE basket. I let the Office Manager choose two item's out of the basket, thanked her for her time and then moved on the Remax where I left 21 packets, I continued this through out the day until all 75 packet's were delievered. This is now Tuesday of the following week. I have received 9 call's, 7 were to place order's and 2 were to ask question's. The 7 order's that I have received have been for $581 in " Planet Spa " products. I will make up a cute basket w/ the products in them, decorate, and deliver to the agent. One agent ordered 5 basket's she is in the process of closing 5 sale's and loves the idea of a Home Spa w/ the Planet Spa products for the new homeowner. In the basket I will also add a brochure along w/ an introduction letter, and a warm note welcoming them into there new home.
WHY Should I Canvass an Area MORE than Once???
Because the MORE that you canvass an area.. the more customers you will pick up! Here are some statistics... How many times to leave a brochure ??? Statistics show 80% of all sales are made after the 5th contact 48% Give up after only the 1st contact 25% Give up after only the 2nd contact
12% Give up after only the 3rd contact 5% Give up after only the 4th contact So only 10% leave brochures after the 5th time, AND TO THIS 10% RECEIEVES 80% of all the sales. (statistic's courtesy of Dale York, Avon Man & Rose Circle Level in Sales)
When I am asked about tossing.. I recommend that they toss at LEAST 5 times before they give up on the area. I get the MOST response from an area when I have tossed it a minimum of 3 - 7 times

Discounts vs. Free Gifts
Why you don't want to start doing it and why it will always cost you more than you thought. Okay, you have a small customer base and you think that you will offer discounts and maybe that will bring you more customers. It will, but you're shooting your profits in the foot. Here's why it's smarter to offer free products-in almost every situation.
Discount Incentive (for this situation, we're asuming that all products are at the full earnings level) 10% of for all new customers 10 customers that spend $10 each = $100 order total 10% discount ($1 each customer) = $10 Total to collect = $90
You have just LOST $10 in profits Award sales towards PC - $100
Free Gift Incentive10 customers that spend $10 each = $100 order total Free gift valued at $1 each per customer (book value) = $6 (your cost at 40% earnings is $0.60 x 10
Your Order Total = $106 Total to Collect from your customers = $100 You lose $6 in profits instead of $10 saving you $4 Award Sales towards PC - $106
When you offer FREE GIFTS instead of a DISCOUNT .... You are getting GREATER award sales (getting you closer to Presidents Club!)... and You collect MORE money, than you would with a discount... And instead of losing $10 in profits.. you lose 6 dollars in profits, saving 40% of what you would lose if you offered a discount

Below are SEVERAL different gift baskets that I have seen
for sale. Most of these were offered on Avon.com.. and you won't make any money on them (or very little), if you offer them at the "suggested" prices... Just take into consideration the price that you purchased the product at; and the cost of the basket, etc... and price them at a reasonable price...
For instance.. you could take the Book price of the items.. and knock 10% - 25% off...

How to Host A Successful Book Party - Hostess Information Below are 4 different flyers with the instructions on "How to
Host a Successful Book Party"... each Flyer is different.. Feel free to edit each of them... or combine them to suit your specific needs! Flyer 1 Catalog parties CAN be very successful if the hostess is coached properly! Here are some ideas for coaching your hostesses through a catalog party. 1- Have your hostess pick out the things she wants for free. Then calculate it up to figure out how much she needs to sell to get what she wants for free. This gives the hostess a goal to work towards. 2- Make sure the hostess has a list to add all of her friends and family on. This way if they all are wrote down, she will not forget to ask anyone! 3- Give your hostess a start date and an end date. This way you will not be faced with a month long catalog show. If she has a date she must close by, she will work to make sure she can all orders within her time frame. 4- Remind your hostesses to ask everyone if they would be interested in hosting their own party and she can still qualify for more rewards for getting bookings, either in home or catalog parties. 5- Call the hostess at least 2 time though out the set time frame to see if she needs any order forms or more catalogs. Doing this will also give you a chance to "check in" and see how things are going so far. Ask how she is doing so far and if there is anything you can do to help her. You may be able to encourage her at this point if things are not going as well as planned. 6- If the catalog party is local instead of having the hostess deliver the products, you make all deliveries, this way you have a chance to meet each customer and can introduce yourself to them. This way you can possibly gain future shows or recruits, by dealing
directly with the customers.
You don't have to have some one to book a party. You can just host one your self. I hold one a month in the summer from March until September or October. I invite all my customers and have them bring a friend. We play games and talk about new products. I also serve some type of refreshments. In fact I just held one today. They are a lot of fun and when your customers bring their friends you could just gain some new customers or even a new recruit. I signed a lady up today right therein the middle of the party while every one was eatting and shopping in the books. What ever you do just make sure that you always do a door prize and that you keep in mind that only about 1/3 to 1/2 of the people you invite will show up. But you never know who will bring friends with them

If you have anything that YOU use to encourage your Helper to find those orders for you. Email them to me at
All of the information here I have
copied from either the youravon.com bb boards... or the erep bb boards.
and I will post them here. You can let your helper look through the demo books to get her discount on something. Also, If she orders something in a specific line (say a perfume) give her a comparable product (talc, body lotion) to go with as a thank you. At our Christmas party for the district, the Dm gave out tons of stuff. So I in turn shared some with my helper.
If Avon sends something extra in my order that I may not want. I ask if she would like it. She gets 10% of anything she brings me and I let her order the demos. Of course, she just signed up to sell, so I won't have to worry about all of that now. Even with 10% of what she would bring me, she made $3.54. I showed her the same orders at 40% (my cost) she made $11.90. You still make money either way! Good luck ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ You have to Put Effort IN to get Effort OUT! Just life I guess Only offer them a discount IF a new customer orders, and pays for it. It doesn't cut into your profit. It is an order you wouldn't have had if they hadn't have helped. Example: If you are at 40%, a customer gets you a new customer that is $20.00 you just made $8.00 and a customer that might order every campaign or every other one. You give the customer that got you that customer (your helper) 10% off her next order (once for that new customer) She would have to order $80.00 worth of products for you to lose that $8.00 profit. One she isn't going to order that much, and 2 when she places an order of $30.00 you give her 3.00 off that order but you also just made 12.00 off of her order. So you really aren't out any thing. Hope that makes sense. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I keep it business like and simple. I pay them or allow them to take it off their order whichever they prefer. 100.00 = 10% 200.00 = 15% 300.00 = 20%
400.00 or more = 30% Sure it costs me some but, they have an incentive to do more also. Besides I get the sales awards allowing me to make PC or HS or more! They see the profitablility of AVON as a business and at some point (after a particularly GOOD Campaign) there is a good chance they will take the plunge to become a Representative!
(I personally do NOT recommend PAYING your Helper. I would either offer them FREE product or a discount, but that is MY personal opinion! Heidi)
(or Letter To Your Customers) Feel free to edit as you need to. Hi I'm _______.
A local Avon Representative. I have just relocated to the city/town/community of __________ and am extending to all my potential clients this great offer: In order to expand my customer base I like to enlist the help of others, as Helpers. Helpers are simply customers that help me to spread the word about Avon. As my helper, your main responsibilities would be to: 1. Distribute brochures to anyone you know that's interested; 2. Collect and submit orders to me by the due date (via phone, e-mail or in person); 3. Collect the payments and distribute the orders. In return you get X% of the totals in free Avon & mark products. It doesn't matter whether the order size is $15 or $150, you will always be rewarded for your efforts! I also like to give extra incentives to my Helpers in addition to earned rewards. I will always provide you with any brochures, samples, and demo products that you will need and you can give me the orders whichever way is most convenient for you. If you would like to take part in this, give me a call at home anytime at (xxx)xxx-xxxx or e-mail email@example.com Also, if you know anyone else who'd like to participate let me know. I can get them started, too!
Sincerely, ________________ Independant Avon Representative (xxx)xxx-xxx email: www.youravon.com/yoursite
Avon Assistant Sales Representatives Contract
(a.k.a. helper) This contract was emailed to me by Christina Benson, who got it from another rep.. who prob'ly got it from another rep.... Please feel free to edit it for your own use. This Contract is in 2 parts... Part 1 outlines the Helpers "job".. and your expectations of her/him... Part 2 is the part they need to fill out COMPLETELY and sign. For YOUR legal safety.. Make two copies, 1 for YOUR records.. 1 for your HELPERS records. Becoming an Avon Assistant Sales Representatives is a smart move. You can make earnings similar to contractual Avon Representatives, without the expense of supplies, samples and brochures, and without the commitment and investment of becoming a small business owner. Whatever your financial goals are, being an assistant sales rep can help you reach those goals without overcommitting your most precious asset — your TIME. Here are the highlights of the program: Each campaign you get twice the number of brochure packs as the number of orders you collected for the previous campaign. Each pack consists of the What's New bag, a brochure, sample(s) (if available), and contact info label. You will always get at least 5, regardless of order size. Of course, you can purchase as many extras as you wish starting at 30¢ per pack. Specialty brochures may be included at my discretion. To assist you in making the most of your efforts, all marketing items are available for you to purchase at cost, and count towards your earning sales level. Pass them out to your friends, neighbors, and/or place of business. You may choose to run additional sales & specials, offer incentives, etc to boost your business. These come out of your earnings. Then a day before the order is to go in, check with your customers to see what they would like to order. After summarizing all your orders, email or call me with the total your number of customers orders you got (this is required by AVON for the $0.75 fee per personal order, and helps cover the cost of brochures, samples, bags, shipping & returns), along with the details of your entire order, to include Brochure #, Page #, Item #, Item name, Item quantity, and price each. You MUST
submit your order by the deadline or you will have to pay the late-order and shipping charges imposed by AVON , in order to participate in the campaign. When the order comes in, I furnish you with a receipt book, an itemized list of your order and the amount owed based on your earnings level (see chart below). A 50% deposit of the total amount owed is due upon receipt of your merchandise. (After 4 campaigns, your account will be reviewed, and the deposit amount required may be raised or lowered based on payment history). You deliver and collect for your customers, and submit a single payment to me (cash, paypal or money order). Your account must have a zero balance, and all credit card payments must be applied by AVON before your next order can be submitted. While AVON delivery bags are provided at no charge, and the nicer tote-style bags may be purchased at cost. Earnings Percent Sales Levels (reevaluated quarterly, and subject to revision) 10%..........................$ 50.01 to $100 15%.........................$100.01 to $150 20%.........................$151.01 to $300 25%.........................$300.01 to $450 30%.........................$450.01 to $650 35%..........................$650.01 and up Note: You receive 10% earnings on all Avon Apparel, Licensed Merchandise, and 14 karat jewelry (indicated in the Avon brochure with diamond mark) once your total sales reach the 15% level. These items always count towards your earnings level. Local Sales Tax (currently____%) is assessed and charged by AVON on the retail amount of all purchases, regardless of your earnings level discount, and any sales or discounts you may wish to offer your customers. You must charge the full tax amount to your customers, to recoup your expenses. There are no sales quotas to fill, and your earnings potential is unlimited. Go for it!
