CANWEST GLOBAL FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES 7-ELEVEN INC. AS
               NATIONAL RAISE-A-READER SPONSOR
National Retail Chain Supports Children’s Literacy Campaign

WINNIPEG: The CanWest Global Foundation announced today that 7-Eleven Inc. is a
Gold Level sponsor of the 2005 CanWest Raise-a-Reader campaign. This national
initiative raises awareness, resources and funds for family literacy programs across
Canada.

This year, in partnership with CanWest Raise-a-Reader, 7-Eleven Inc. will provide
sponsorship through three initiatives: Canada Day wristbands, Slurpee wristbands and
CanWest Raise-a-Reader coin boxes through July, August and September.

This year marks 7-Eleven’s second year supporting the CanWest Raise-a-Reader
campaign on a national basis. 7-Eleven has been a gold sponsor of Raise-a-Reader Day
in British Colombia for 5 years. All money raised through wristband sales and coin box
collections will stay in the region where it was raised.

“Reading is information, entertainment, knowledge and comfort,” said David Huey,
division Vice-President of 7-Eleven Inc. “The ability to read well is a primary factor in
an individual’s enjoyment and success in life. We at 7-Eleven urge everyone in our
communities across Canada to come to our stores and make a donation to our coin boxes
to support the absolute need to improve literacy. 100% of all proceeds will be donated to
the province in which the donation was made.”

“We are thrilled that 7-Eleven Inc. has continued its support and has taken on this
important role with Raise-a-Reader. Through the generous contributions of sponsors such
as 7-Eleven, we are able to give back to the community by providing the necessary
funding to family literacy programs in need across Canada,” said Leonard Asper,
President and CEO, CanWest Global Communications Corp.

CanWest Raise-a-Reader is a year-round initiative with important fundraising events taking
place throughout the year in 13 cities across Canada, leading up to CanWest Raise-a-Reader
Day. On this day, local celebrities and volunteers will be on street corners coast to coast
exchanging special editions of their local CanWest and partner newspapers for donations that
support local family literacy organizations. This year CanWest Raise-a-Reader Day is
Thursday, September 29th in Victoria, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Saskatoon, Regina,
Winnipeg, Windsor, Hamilton, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal and Halifax. Since its national
inception in 2002, Raise-a-Reader has raised more than $2.82 million for family literacy
initiatives across Canada.
