RESPONSE TO GRIEF
A couple of years ago, quite by chance, I saw an extraordinary interview, a provocative discussion of grief,
conducted by Charlie Rose. The subject of the interview was Joan Didion, whose husband, also an author,
John Gregory Dunne, died suddenly in 2003. Mr. Rose held in his hand The Year of Magical Thinking, the
story of Ms. Didion’s personal journey into grief and sadness after the death of her husband. I was particu-
larly captured by the unrelenting sadness on her face and the monumental crisis she has endured. The inter-
view was a model of compassion and dignity for which Mr. Rose is to be commended. It was far from the
usual book plugging sales pitch that we are all accustomed to. In a lot of ways I felt it was the opening of
the human heart and the sharing of a great loss.
This very worthwhile program explored sorrow and made viewers think about death and how they them-
selves have or would deal with the death of a loved one. I did not see the whole interview, but I looked for
some mention of religion or faith and regretted that either I had missed it or there was none. I know nothing
of Ms. Didion’s religious views—but I do know that her husband was a Catholic and received the last rites
at the time of his death. Whatever faith Joan Didion may have, as important as that is, is not my point. It is
the greatness of her grief that touches me and prompts me to ask you to think about your own reac-
tion to death and loss.
Each human person is a mystery and each person has his or her own experience of dealing with grief.
Sometimes we all can make the mistake of minimizing or misunderstanding the tragedy that is afflicting the
soul of a bereaved person. We can assume that because an individual is mourning the death of an elderly
parent who has been sick for years, the grieving is fairly easy. Of course, just the exact opposite may be the
case. For all we know in our very limited and inadequate knowledge, the individual may be beside himself
and filled with depression. His or her world may have ended as far as the person can realize. We need to
take all this into account when we approach the bereaved. All of them are worthy of our compassion, time
and understanding. Many very much simply need someone to listen to them and say very little. Above all
they need us to be available to them—even when it is inconvenient for us.
We frequently attend wakes and funerals. These are so much more than social obligations—they are oppor-
tunities to bring the peace and sympathy of Christ to those who are suffering and are disconsolate. Our very
presence, interest and concern are a blessing. As a matter of fact, when we share in these moments we are
doing the work of Christ—we are consoling the sorrowful. This is something that Jesus made a point to do
when He was on earth. Those who are His followers should do the same thing.
Wakes and funerals are short term things—the process of healing from the death of a cherished family
member or friend is ongoing. It is during this time that we need to show the charity of Christ by our contin-
ued interest in the bereaved. As we pray for the dead, the living must be unfailingly supported by our love
and visible and consistent concern. Such kindness is an imitation of the compassionate Heart of Jesus
Christ. He never abandons the bereaved—nor should we.
In Jesus and Mary,
Monsignor James. M. McDonald

INCLUSION AWARENESS WEEKEND
Bishop Murphy has requested all parishes in the Diocese to mark
October 8th/9th as Inclusion Awareness Weekend. St. Aidan par-
ish will celebrate the gifts of all God’s people with special needs
and their families at the 12:00 PM Mass on October 9th. What-
ever Mass we attend this weekend, may we be more aware of each
other and remember together, we are the Body of Christ.
The New Translation of the Roman Missal
This weekend we begin introducing the changes in the prayers of the Mass that will take place
on the first Sunday of Advent – November 27th. Each week we will be highlighting a different
part of the text. When you see the side by side comparison, you will note that the words that are
changing will be in bold print. Some prayers will have only one or two changes, but others will
be more substantial. For example, the Sanctus has only one change while the Glory to God and
the Creed have several. This week we will compare the Sanctus – what the Church calls the
Great Cosmic Acclamation of Praise.
Sanctus (Holy, Holy, Holy)
Current Translation New Translation
Holy, holy, holy, Lord, God of power and might. Holy, holy, holy Lord God of hosts.
Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest. Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes Blessed is he who comes
In the name of the Lord. In the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest. Hosanna in the highest.
At the conclusion of the Preface comes the Sanctus, which in Latin means “Holy.” The
Sanctus, like the Gloria, is intended to be sung – in fact, many different settings of the Latin
text exist even in Gregorian chant. The only textual difference from our current version is that
“God of power and might” becomes “God of hosts.” The word “Hosts” refers to a great
gathering or multitude, and speaks here of God’s command over the heavenly host of angelic
armies.
This reference has a Biblical foundation in Isaiah 6:1-3, where the prophet writes, “I saw the
Lord seated on a high and lofty throne… Seraphim were stationed above… ‘Holy, holy, holy is
the Lord of hosts!’ they cried one to the other. ‘All the earth is filled with his glory!’”
And in Luke 2:13, a “multitude of the heavenly host” also announced the birth of Jesus to
the shepherds. The words of the final three lines of the Sanctus can be found in the Gospel of
Matthew, during the entry of Jesus into Jerusalem before His Passion, as the people shouted,
“Hosanna to the Son of David; blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord; hosanna in
the highest” (Mt. 21:9). Versions of this acclamation appear in the other Gospel, and the
“Blessed is he…” line comes from Psalm 118 (117), amidst a passage that became understood
as a reference to Christ.
The Sanctus reminds us that all creatures on “heaven and earth” owe thanksgiving to God
(“Eucharist” actually means “thanksgiving”). And because we truly believe that the Angels are
also present and worshipping with us as we celebrate the Holy Eucharist, then every fiber of
our being is made to reflect the utmost reverence. Therefore, immediately after the Sanctus, we
kneel. Kneeling is a sign of respect and humility that is distinctly human and bodily – it is
something that even the Angels, being pure spirit, cannot do.

ROTARY CLUB TOOL DRIVE
The Rotary Club of Williston Park is happy to initiate a tool drive to benefit the needy
communities of Popayan, Columbia South America. In 1983 the city was devastated with a
horrific earthquake. Much of the poorer parts of the city have still not been rebuilt due to
the lack of resources such as simple hand tools.
We’ve all experienced the frustration of not having the correct tool for a
needed task. All one needs to do is run down to the hardware store, get the
tool, and the problem is solved. Now imagine how frustrating it must be to
lack the proper tools with so much work to be done, and no resources to get
the needed implements. The Rotary Club in Popayan will distribute the do-
nated tools to the affected communities. This club has taken on the task of
helping to get these devastated communities rebuilt and has several rebuild-
ing projects in progress where the tools can be immediately put to use.
The Williston Park Rotary Club is asking that people go to their basements and
garages to donate the tools they no longer use. We are in need of hammers, saws,
screw drivers, masonry tools, pliers etc. as well as farming implements such as
shovels, rakes, mauls, axes, hoes, etc. Donations of nails and screws can also be
used. What a great way to clean out your space and help a very appreciative community.
Drop off donations at Village Gift and Flower 18 Hillside Ave; Haller Insurance 328 Hillside Ave;
Zolezzii Auto Body 432 Willis Ave. For local pick-up call Frank Galalis (516) 741-5059.
LIGHTHOUSE CATHOLIC MEDIA
I trust many of you have signed up for all three conferences, and attended the first conference that our
parish is presenting to explain the new translation of the Roman Missal.
These lectures, not only will help us to understand the changes, but will allow us to comprehend and
embrace the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass as a celebration where we are all fully participants.
We, as the Body of Christ, gather together to praise, to pray, in words, songs, and gestures. With our bodies, minds and
hearts, in union with the whole assembly, we can enter totally in a personal communion with Christ
Let’s encourage one another to participate in these conferences and become actively present at every part of the Mass,
understanding our role and why it is important to respond to the prayers and to sing.
As was offered last week, we have a CD, “A WALK THROUGH THE NEW MASS TRANSLATION” with a FREE 24
page booklet as a guide, perfect to hear again and again and share it with friends and family.
Also this week we offer a new CD “WHY GO TO MASS.” The blood of the new covenant, by Bishop Alexander Sam-
ple. Did you hear people saying…?” Mass is boring….” Or “I do not get much out of it….” Well, this talk is for them!
Bishop Sample shows practical reasons why we need to understand the nature of the Mass as a sacrifice and a sacred ban-
quet to find the transforming power of our worship.
The second CD of the week, “THE FACE OF GOD” by Blessed Mother Theresa, where she explains the value of God’s
gift of life. A perfect CD for you to give away during this Respect for Life month.
Meet people where they are with these CDs…..leading them where God calls them to be.
REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL
PARISH AND SCHOOL VOLUNTEERS
In order to insure the safety of our young people, all parish and school staffs, along with all who volunteer in any way for
the Church of St. Aidan, must first complete VIRTUS Training and are required to submit to a criminal background
check.
The purpose of this Diocesan and Parish policy is to provide a universal vigilance. We seek to provide an environment
in which all are aware of the difference between appropriate and inappropriate behaviors, an environment in which all
recognize potential danger signs and unhealthy situations and an environment in which all know the proper course of
action to be taken when something is wrong and when something raises concern. The VIRTUS Training is designed to
help us recognize potentially dangerous situations so that no one is harmed.
It is important to note that VIRTUS Training is mandatory. If a parish volunteer, whether he/she works with children or
not, does not complete VIRTUS Training, he/she will not be permitted to serve in any volunteer capacity at the Church
of St. Aidan or at any other parish in the Diocese of Rockville Centre.
We thank all who have cooperated with this Diocesan and Parish policy. All who are interested in being a volunteer on
any level in our parish are expected to complete these requirements before they begin their volunteer service. The time
and places of VIRTUS Training are listed each week in The Long Island Catholic or visit the Diocese of Rockville Cen-
tre website at www.DRVC.org. and click on Protecting Our Children. The Criminal Background Check form may be
obtained from the Rectory office. If you have not completed the form we ask that you do so as soon as possible.
Pre-registration is required for all classes. For classes at the surrounding parishes registration is accomplished on-line by
going to the diocesan web site, www.drvc.org and clicking on the Virtus training link (right column of diocesan home
page, approximately three-quarters of way down page). The registration page will also show the complete calendar of
classes across all of Nassau and Suffolk counties.
If you can’t remember when and where you might have taken a Virtus training class, please call the Virtus cus-
tomer service number (888) 847-8870.
