Ambulance Driver Privileges Policy
All employees, who must drive RMC- owned vehicles or drive personal vehicles on RMC time, must
complete a driving privileges application, hold a valid drivers license, allow RMC to complete a Drivers
Record Check before hire and randomly throughout employment, maintain a good driving record and be fit
for duty.
Drivers Record Verification/Check Guidelines
Prior to employment or transfer into a position requiring the operation of either a hospital-owned or
personal vehicle to perform normal/routine duties and responsibilities, applicants must present a valid
Montana Drivers License and have an acceptable driving record.
If the driving record verification indicates any of the following, you may have all RMC driving privileges
revoked:
Conviction of Deliberate Homicide
Conviction of Negligent Homicide/Manslaughter (Vehicular)
Conviction of Negligent Vehicular Assault
Conviction of Felonies (Vehicular)
Conviction of Criminal Endangerment (Vehicular)
Conviction of DUI
Driving while suspended, revoked or expired drivers license within the last 36 months
Regardless of the reason, any suspension, cancellation, or denial of a drivers license in
Montana in the last 36 months
Reckless Driving charges, driving with willful and wanton disregard for the safety of
persons and property, with in the last 36 months
Hit and Run/failure to report or leaving the scene of an accident within the last 36 months
Conviction of three or more moving violations within the past 36 months
Two or more chargeable vehicle accidents within the last 36 months
Having acquired 8 or more points in the past 24 months
Any conduct deemed to put the hospital, employees, patients or general public at risk
Employees must comply with the following guidelines while operating RMC vehicles or personal vehicles
during the course of duty:

Wear seatbelt
Use RMC vehicles only for authorized business
No smoking in RMC vehicles
Report needed vehicle repairs or problems immediately
Operate the vehicle in accordance with regulations of the Montana Dept. Motor Vehicles and
exercise normal safety precautions.
An employee shall not operate a RMC Emergency Vehicle if his/her driver's license is no longer valid (i.e.
expired, revoked, suspended, etc.). An employee shall notify his/her Supervisor or Department Head if
his/her driver's license is no longer valid. Failure to notify Supervisor or Department Head of the loss of a
driver's license and continuing to operate RMC- owned vehicles might result in disciplinary action up to
and including dismissal.
Employees who fail to comply with the above stated guidelines may jeopardize continued privileges to
drive RMC vehicles and/or will be subject to disciplinary action
Montana Code 61-8-107. Police vehicles and authorized emergency vehicles. (1) The driver of a police
vehicle or authorized emergency vehicle, when responding to an emergency call or when in the pursuit of
an actual or suspected violator of the law or when responding to but not upon returning from a fire alarm,
may exercise the privileges set forth in this section, but subject to the conditions herein stated.
(2) The driver of a police vehicle or authorized emergency vehicle may:
(a) park or stand, irrespective of the provisions of this chapter;
(b) proceed past a red or stop signal or stop sign, but only after slowing down as may be
necessary for safe operation;
(c) exceed the speed limits so long as he does not endanger life or property;
(d) disregard regulations governing direction of movement or turning in specified
directions.
(3) The exemptions granted to a police vehicle or authorized emergency vehicle apply only when the
vehicle is making use of an audible or visual signal, or both, meeting the requirements of 61-9-402.
(4) The foregoing provisions shall not relieve the driver of a police vehicle or authorized emergency
vehicle from the duty to drive with due regard for the safety of all persons, nor shall such provisions
protect the driver from the consequences of his reckless disregard for the safety of others.
