The Giant Events Company producing Land of the Giants

Giants Events Company is a community interest company established to secure and deliver large-
scale outdoor arts events of originality and excellence. The company was established by a
consortium of event producers - Young at Art, The Beat Initiative, Belfast Community Circus and
Belfast City Council Events Unit - who have strong track records in the delivery of successful events
and in the creation of high quality arts experiences. The Company is governed by an independent
Board of Directors. In June 2012 Giant Events Company will deliver Land of Giants, the largest
outdoor arts event ever to take place in Northern Ireland. Funded by Legacy Trust UK, NITB, ACNI
and Belfast City Council, Land of Giants will be a highlight of the London 2012 Festival and of NITB’s
2012 events programme. Land of Giants, is one of only four UK Community Celebrations and plays a
key role in the lead up to the 2012 Olympic Games profiling Northern Ireland on an international

Land of Giants Outline:
An epic, ambitious event, Land of Giants will take place on Belfast’s Titanic Slipways on 30th June
2012 involving a cast and crew of over 500 professionals and volunteers. Combining acrobatics,
aerial dance, carnival, circus, physical performance, music, multi-media and pyrotechnics, the event
directed by Mark Murphy will present a unique and inspiring story to an audience of over 20,000
people at the City’s newest open air events space.

        The final structure of the project is still under development but the confirmed elements
    ●   the Main Event on the Titanic Slipways site on Saturday 30th June 2012;
    ●   day-time or early evening events which will act as a prelude to, and be artistically integrated
        into, the Main Event.
    ●   a touring event for children - The Giant is Coming - which will be artistically integrated with
        the concepts of the main event.
    ●   a major programme of participation, training and artistic development activities which
        ensures high levels of participation in the Project locally and creates a lasting legacy.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES          To act as Lighting Designer

                                   In collaboration with the Creative Producer, Artistic Director,
                                   Designer and other creative associates, to devise and produce
                                   lighting design elements to support the realisation of the Creative
                                   Vision for the Event

                                   Amongst other activities, it is envisaged that this will include

                                           Research

                                           Design and provision of illustrations and technical drawings

                                           Liaison with the project’s artistic, technical and production

                                           Collaboration and communication with contractors
                                            supplying and installing the production’s lighting design

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES                   To work within the budget and timescales set out by the
                                            project’s Creative Producer and approved by The Giants
                                            Events Company .
                                           To oversee and support the skills development of
                                            supporting team members and associated artists and
                                            contribute to the creative legacy of the project.
                                           To help to develop the Company's commitment to equal

                                            main areas of responsibility at the time of writing. Any
                                            other duties required as the project progresses will be as
                                            agreed with the Producer.

REFERENCES                                  Mark Murphy (Artistic Director)has been directing
                                            professionally for over twenty years and has spent much of
                                            the last four directing world-class, large-scale outdoor
                                            shows with Walk the Plank including the European Capital
                                            of Culture launch events for both Liverpool in 2008 and
                                            Turku (Finland) in 2011. In addition Mark wrote and
                                            directed the major site specific shows The Gathering at
                                            Edinburgh Castle in 2009 with a cast of two hundred
                                            performers and A Wave at Picasso in Liverpool’s historic
                                            Salthouse Dock with a cast including canoeists, swimmers
                                            and stunt fire performers. Alongside major events Mark
                                            continues to make indoor, outdoor and site specific theatre
                                            for companies including National Theatre of Scotland,
                                            Warwick Arts Centre, Greenwich and Docklands
                                            International Festival, BBC, The Northern Stage Ensemble,

                                            BAC, Legs on the Wall, NVA and The Traverse amongst
                                            John Wassell (Creative Producer) brings not only his most
                                            recent experience of working in partnership with Mark
                                            Murphy on the major events detailed above but also his
                                            twenty years of producing stunning theatrical
                                            performances in alternative locations through his company
                                            Walk the Plank. Walk the Plank aims to bring the arts to
                                            those who would not otherwise have the opportunity to
                                            encounter lush performance experiences and has recently
                                            been included within the Arts Council of England’s National
                                            Portfolio and awarded an uplift in their funding in
                                            recognition of the quality of their work.
