I understand that they have land deeds, wills, etc and I have not yet looked into all of this. What
surprises me is that there is apparently quite a difference between what they have and what can be found
in each county. Also, it has been a great help to me learning about the Willis. We are now sure that
some of these Wills are ours in Monroe and Spotswood Wills who md Mary Wills was the brother of our
Edmund and John Wills was their father. I have not yet found further information on Willis Wills but
maybe something will turn up.
Thank you so much for the article on James. Jesse was from Virginia and there is much arguing among
the James as to who does or does not want to be related to him. I long ago decided that he was slightly
unbalanced.
If you would write to the Archives and ask them for the Cooper marriage index from Monroe (or any of
them) they will send them as they are cross indexed.

Keys, Mannassas Junction, Kelley’s ford, Kenowah, Kearnstown, Berryville and a host of others. He
received his discharge October 6, 1865; P C in Tom Lambert Post G A R ; he died May 25, 1904, Aid

This is only a partial listing as these records are in no order at all. They are not only a mess
alphabetically but are listed at random in 20 or 30 different volumes.
As a matter of fact – I went down this morning and it took me about 1 hour to go through one township.
So this is why the list is only partial.
Geo & Joshua Willis must have owned half the land in Lawrence Co from the number of entries. Time
ran out on me so I only skipped through them. Later I’ll go through and get a complete list for you. The
Land Records of the Ohio Company are here also, so I will go through them and report to you, This of
course, includes Galllia Co.
The Patent Certificates are in the National Archives & I will also check them in hope of finding further
information.. They tell me that they do include place of origin & I hope so for the benefit of us both.

A. Lawrence County wasn’t established until 1817, In that year (1817) Robert Rucker owned 167
acres of land in , what is now, Mason Township, W A and Nora Remy ?; Thomas and Julia Swindal;
and Rhonda Shephard own this land today.

A. This range 17, township 4, section 23, is Aid Township, Mrs R W, the southwest corner, Mr George
and Stella McClure own 60 acres of this land and Jay Roy Nicodemus owns 20 acres. The United
States Government owns the rest (the west half).

Frank B Willis Stricken Here at OWU
Delaware County, Ohio, might have gone down in history as the birthplace of two presidents, Rutherford
B Hayes and Frank B Willis.

But fate stepped in on March 30, 1928. That was the night when Senator Willis was stricken with a
Cerebral Hemorrhage minutes before he was to address a cheering throng in Gray Chapel during his
campaign for the presidential nomination.
Willis was climaxing his 29-year career in politics with a bid for the highest office. He died in the office
of the president of Ohio Wesleyan University, across the corridor from the Chapel auditorium.
Willis was born in Berlin Township on Peachblow Rd. on Dec 28, 1871. He attended schools in Berlin
and Berkshire townships and was graduated from Galena High School. He was a graduate of Ohio
Northern University where he received his master’s degree in 1894.
Taught at OWU
He was elected state representative from Hardin County in 1899 and served one term. Then he returned
to ONU to teach Law , history and economics. He failed in his first try for congressman from the eighth
district in 1904, but in 1910 he was elected to the House of Representatives.
During his two terms in the house he fought for pensions for needy Soldiers, a duty on wool and more
protection for the growing labor movement. In the midst of his busy life in the capitol, he found time to
enter and win a spelling bee sponsored by the National Press Club of Washington. The winning word
was ―hydrocephalus.‖
Following in the footsteps of Rutherford B Hayes, Willis returned to Ohio in 1914 to throw his hat into
the gubernatorial race. To the surprise of many, he defeated the reform administration of James M Cox,
a Democrat.
The new governor was warmly received by the press and the people, especially after he insisted on being
inaugurated outside the state house so that the public could witness the ceremony.
Defeated for Re-election
Governor Willis’ program was one of economic retrenchment and conservative government. He
preferred to create an atmosphere of cooperation, refusing to browbeat or bully the General Assembly.
This was severely criticized on the press which accused Willis of failing to provide effective leadership.
He made further enemies by tightening the requirements for civil service jobs and reducing the salaries
and numbers of governmental workers. In 1916 Willis was defeated for re-election by Cox.
Four years later, Willis was back in the political spotlight with his famous words that swept Warren G
Harding to the top of the Republican ticket; ―Boys and girls, let’s nominate Harding.‖ Willis stopped
into the Senate seat vacated by Harding and started again on the program he believed best for the people,
prohibition, high tariffs and adequate Merchant Marine, pardons and paroles for prisoners and America
first. He was reelected to the Senate in 1926 by an overwhelming majority.
When Calvin Coolidge made it clear in 1927 that he would not seek re-election , Willis announced his
intention of running in the Ohio primary. His campaign was complicated a short time later when Herbert
Hoover also decided to run in Ohio.

But the Senator from Ohio had many things in his favor and it was in the midst of a vigorous campaign
that he had come to Delaware on March 30, 1928 tp address a rally on the campaign.

He attended a dinner that evening at Kiwanis Club, then watched a parade in his honor from the porch of
the Hotel Allen, He and his wife, the former Allie Bustin of Galena, followed the cheering throngs to
Gray Chapel there they were seated on the platform with other Republican party leaders.
A few minutes before he was to address the cheering throng, Willis left the platform, whispering to his
wife that he was not feeling well and needed a breath of fresh air, he collapsed in the hall.
Willis was a handsome man of imposing stature. H e was clever and challenging campaigner and was at
his best at informal party rallies, church socials and rural get-togethers.
He had a rich booming voice which could be fashioned to meet any demand. One of his greatest political
assets was his uncanny ability to remember faces and names.
His home county honored him a few years after his death by naming the new high school in Delaware
