“Well,” I say brightly, “if you can’ t get away
with it as a house, you could always market
it as a hotel”. Andrew Silver, the developer,
looks at me in a manner best described as
tight-lipped. He is giving me a tour around
his latest project, Jersey House, a £40m,
20000sq ft trophy home situated at the top,
that is the extremely expensive, end of The
Bishops Avenue, in Hampstead, one of the
most expensive roads in London.

The £1.5 million redesign of this mezzanine,
penthouse, riv erside apartment in London
prov ided our client with 30% more f loor
space, primarily by rationalising the
serv ices, such as water tanks and boilers,
in the lof t space.
Our client's brief was to produce a
''monastic'', tranquil env ironment by using a
minimal v ocabulary of materials throughout
the liv ing, kitchen, bedroom and bathroom
area.
The project was completed in 2006..
"The success of this project was largely due
to the close collaboration between the client,
the designer and the contractor."

without doors leav ing the main space as
dressing room.
Lighting and changing ceiling lev els are used

Our client had purchased a deep plan, shell
apartment with one glazed wall but limited
light to the sides and rear. Our challenge
was to extend the f eeling of light and space
throughout the plan.
Central to our scheme is a circular shower
room, with the kitchen, liv ing and bedrooms
radiating around it. The shower room walls
are etched on both sides, prov iding dif f used
light but priv acy .
The apartment was a f inalist in the FX
design awards and was used as a location
f or Craig Dav id's number one DVD ”Fill Me
In”.

The 1200 sq f t f ormer f actory building in
Clerkenwell was conv erted into a f lexible
‘liv e/work’ lof t apartment.
The design, in both planning terms and in
the f inished used, prov ides a calm and
neutral backdrop to inhabit. The wide oak
plank f looring, laid on a diagonal to echo the
ceiling, is used throughout the main liv ing
areas, with limestone f loors in the serv ice
spaces, elsewhere surf aces are concrete pr
painted in saturated colours,
Costs had to be caref ully controlled to f ulf ill
the requirement f or quality and longev ity of
f inishes.
