For a tip role to switch find a small jump or roller edge to give you just a little bit of a pop. With slow speed pop yourself forward and sideways, as if to look down at the ground. The trick is to tuck your feet up under your butt, while rolling over to get off the ski bases and rocker on the side and tip edges instead. With the tips gripping and forward momentum carrying you through, push out the legs again to bring you back onto your feet facing back up the run. For a tip stand start with a lot of space (not the lift line) a flat groomed location works great. Start with a small pole push forward to gain a small amount of momentum. Commit to jumping up and forward with the tips digging in and again pull the feet up under your butt. Use your poles to catch yourself from going fully over frontward the first few times. I like throwing these on the side hips along the grandfathers on the way to the quad. See how long you can sit on your tips, your friends will love it. I'm hearing from people that it's the same everywhere, and that global warming is ruining our ski resorts. I was planning on heading up to Apex this spring break for some turns, but I'm hesitant considering what I've heard of the BC resort conditions. Is it worth going up to shred? Susie Unsure Dear Susie, I would have to agree with you that most BC resorts are experiencing less then ideal snow conditions this season, especially our Olympic host resorts. Whether or not it's global warming, El Nino, or Mother Natures hot flash, Apex has seemed to have avoided the unfortunate piss poor weather conditions. I personally have experienced some of the best conditions I have ever had riding at Apex, thus far this season. It has been a tad mid milder than usual and yet cold enough to keep an awesome base. With enough new snow now and again to soften things up, the overall riding has been ideal. Top it off with a great terrain park layout, it can't get much better! Oh wait, yes it can: a cold beer and awesome burger at the Gunbarrel for lunch and the day is complete. You are depriving yourself, if you don't get up to Apex and shred this year. Hopefully, I'll see you up there enjoying yourself on the slopes, or at the bar! February blahs? Seasonal Affective Disorder? 250.487.1455 Some out there refer to February as the hardest month; not very much sun and grey days dominating the weather. Recently a columnist from Ontario wrote that we should skip from January to March on the calendar. The shorter days and scarcity of sunlight can make some of us feel emotionally low in the winter. Symptoms can range from mild loss of energy and wanting to cocoon in our house to depression or anxiety. Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is on the severe end of the spectrum and may consist of: difficulty waking up in the morning, tendency 250.493.7343 to oversleep as well as to overeat, and especially a craving for carbohydrates, which leads to weight gain. Other symptoms include a lack of energy, difficulty concentrating on completing tasks, and withdrawal from friends, family, and social activities. Or Not How many people do you know that are living a great life? Happy, successful, healthy people out there doing lots of cool things. I know a few, see others, and expect there are more around … I also think there could be many more. There are skills that enable a great life and things that rob us of a great life. Once you become aware of these “thieves”, you have a better chance at a quality life. 1) Heath neglect - don’t eat too much crap, exercise often and aerobically, care for your injuries and sore parts. 2) Excuses - use them sparingly as ALL of the active people I know have a bad knee, lower back, ankle, blah, blah, blah. Work the parts that still work. 3) Mental neglect - thoughts, beliefs, & attitudes have EVERYTHING to do with how your life is going and most of us have never learned to manage these. The more troublesome fact of these “thieves” is they can become unconscious. Now they are habits and are even more destructive. Ask yourself if any of these habits apply to you. Be good to yourself by being hard on yourself, because once they’ve become habits you might not see them anymore. “To profit from good advice requires as much wisdom as to give it.” Jim Ongena is a life coach living in Summerland.
