Tip Roles/Stands - We always want to throw tricks down
in front of our buddies and an easy trick to get is the tip role
and the tip stand. For a tip role to switch find a small jump
or roller edge to give you just a little bit of a pop. With slow
speed pop yourself forward and sideways, as if to look down
at the ground. The trick is to tuck your feet up under your butt,
while rolling over to get off the ski bases and rocker on the
side and tip edges instead. With the tips gripping and forward
momentum carrying you through, push out the legs again to
bring you back onto your feet facing back up the run. For a tip
stand start with a lot of space (not the lift line) a flat groomed
location works great. Start with a small pole push forward to
gain a small amount of momentum. Commit to jumping up and
forward with the tips digging in and again pull the feet up under
your butt. Use your poles to catch yourself from going fully
over frontward the first few times. I like throwing these on the
side hips along the grandfathers on the way to the quad. See
how long you can sit on your tips, your friends will love it.

I am sure that you have either seen or heard how the Women's
Moguls Competition unfolded last Saturday night. Kristi placed
fourth in the qualification round, but fell after her first air when
gaining tremendous speed in the middle bump section, finishing
20th in the finals. Kristi showed her true spirit though, as she
put on a show for her fans by getting her skis back on and then
executing a huge back full jump on the bottom air.
Kristi, you are the "Apex Sweetheart" and we all love you! You
are a huge inspiration to so many of us and we wish you all the
best in your future endevours. Enjoy the rest of the season!

           Treating the Winter Blahs
By Denise Mend, BSc. P.T., BSc. Kin., MCPA

Winter blues? February blahs? Seasonal Affective Disorder? 250.487.1455
Some out there refer to February as the hardest month; not very
much sun and grey days dominating the weather. Recently a
columnist from Ontario wrote that we should skip from January
to March on the calendar. The shorter days and scarcity of
sunlight can make some of us feel emotionally low in the winter.
Symptoms can range from mild loss of energy and wanting
to cocoon in our house to depression or anxiety. Seasonal
affective disorder (SAD) is on the severe end of the spectrum
and may consist of: difficulty waking up in the morning, tendency 250.493.7343
to oversleep as well as to overeat, and especially a craving for
carbohydrates, which leads to weight gain. Other symptoms
include a lack of energy, difficulty concentrating on completing
tasks, and withdrawal from friends, family, and social activities.
If you feel your symptoms are that severe, seek out medical
and mental health professionals. If your symptoms are milder
and you are tired of looking at the grey skies, we know where
you can go to see the sun! Get up to the mountain!
                                                                         Fairview Mohawk

prescription for treating the winter blues. Experts recommend 250-492-3191
that people with mild symptoms benefit from spending more time
outdoors during the day and by arranging their environments
so that they receive maximum sunlight. What better way than

A lynx is spotted near Apex.

Wednesday, February 17, 2010:
Apparently, there is another (or the same lynx) somewhere on
the ski hill. James Shalman has some amazing photos and
video of the lynx. Here are a few facts about lynx:
- have a territorial range of 15 to 30 square kilometers.
- usually mate in February or March
- have a litter of 2-5 that are born in May
- food consists of rabbit, mice, birds and squirrels
- weigh about 20-40 lbs
- do not attack humans (hopefully)
