As happens with most artists, Stan has been influenced

greatly admires the work of the Australian war artists
Arthur Burgess, Charles Bryant and Frank Norton, and
has been influenced by their expressive use of colour and
imaginatively captured light.
I had been friendly for many years with the internationally
renowned marine artist Stephen Card, whose superb
paintings can be seen on board the latest cruise liners
operated by Cunard Line, Holland America Line and
Saga Cruises among others. I am very pleased that I was
instrumental in introducing Stan to Stephen, and it has
been a productive meeting of minds for both of them. “I
consider myself very fortunate to have personally
exchanged ideas with Stephen about painting” says
Stan. “I’m inspired by Stephen’s masterly use of colour
and his understanding of light.”
Stan has used watercolours and pastels over the years,
but his preference is to paint in oils. When it comes to a
suitable canvas, he says, “Belgian linen canvas is a
delight to paint on with high quality Windsor Newton

look for. Fine linen is a stable support with just the right

Sister Act
by Jonathan Crabbe
There’s nothing like an event on the harbour to attract the attention of
Sydneysiders. On 22 February next year, the world-famous
waterway will play host to another Cunard Royal Rendezvous when
Queen Mary 2 meets her newest fleet mate, Queen Elizabeth.
The latter will be making her first visit to Australia in the course of her
maiden world voyage. Long a favourite of passengers and crew alike,
Sydney Harbour has proved a popular setting for sisterly reunions over
the years and is without doubt one of the most sought-after locations for
cruise lines showcasing their vessels and creating unique photo
opportunities.
Next year’s meeting of Cunard Queens will be the third such rendezvous
in Sydney in recent years and will no doubt attract similar media and
public attention to the previous meetings of the Queens. The first was the
highly publicised meeting of veteran Queen Elizabeth 2 and newcomer
Queen Mary 2 in 2007. Queen Mary 2 was on her maiden world
voyage and arrived in Sydney – her only Australian port of call – shortly
after dawn on 20 February. With the Opera House and Harbour Bridge
34 as backdrop, the giant vessel posed for photographs in the early
morning light before berthing at the Garden Island naval base. Later that
day, Queen Elizabeth 2 made a rare evening arrival and passed her
stationary fleet mate on her way to Circular Quay. As night fell, the

historic event was celebrated with a fireworks display over the harbour,
witnessed by hordes of curious Sydneysiders, many of whom waited
around for Queen Mary 2’s departure several hours later.
Cunard had anticipated the enormous publicity generated by the

meeting and could not resist scheduling another for the following year.
This time the meeting would be even more impressive and was
particularly significant as it would mark the final call of Queen Elizabeth
2 and the maiden visit of the line’s brand new Queen Victoria. The date
would cleverly coincide with the thirtieth anniversary of QE2’s maiden
call in Sydney in 1978. Queen Victoria was first to arrive on the morning
of 23 February, tying up at Circular Quay. QE2 followed twenty-four
hours later, berthing stern-in at Garden Island in time for a magnificent

In the wake of Franklin and Amundsen
A 2009 eastbound Northwest
Passage by Bard Kolltveit
N E W S
C R U I S I N G
Perhaps the most fabled of all sea routes is the Northwest Passage –
the seaway between the Atlantic and the Pacific north of the American
continent. From the first effort by John Cabot’s in 1497 till Roald
Amundsen’s final conquest more than four centuries later, some of
history’s most epic expeditions tried to find a navigable sea route through
a maze of islands, shoals, icebergs and ice flows between Northern
Europe and the riches of the East. Most dramatic and tragic of them all
was led by Sir John Franklin, whose two ships and 129 men disappeared
without a trace in the late1840s.
After Amundsen’s westbound voyage with the sloop Gjøa in 1903-06,
another forty years would pass before the next successful transit took
place – this time from west to east, led by Henry A. Larsen, master of the
RCMP’s inspection vessel St. Roch in 1940-42, returning westwards in
1944.
In 1985 the expedition cruise ship Lindblad Explorer took the first group
of paying passengers through the Northwest Passage, to be followed by
similar vessels in later years. Two ships stand out in this context – Bremen
and Hanseatic, both operated by Hapag-Lloyd Kreuzfahrten. Bremen,
built in 1990, began her career as the Frontier Spirit, under which name
she sailed through the passage in 1992, to be followed by Hanseatic
two years later. Since then, both ships have made the passage several
times, both east- and westbound, but only one at a time.
2009 made an exception, as both ships made the transit simultaneously
– Bremen from east to west in the wake of Amundsen, Hanseatic in the

opposite direction, retracing Larsen’s eastbound conquest. It was
therefore a very special moment when the two ships met at Gjoa Haven,
where Amundsen and his men spent two winters before proceeding
westwards. This will probably be the only occasion when such a meeting
will take place, as the company has reverted to one voyage per year in
the future.
I had the good fortune to join the Hanseatic as lecturer, boarding the ship
at Nome, Alaska, on 13 August, and disembarking at Reykjavik,
Iceland, on 5 September. The three weeks in between gave us all that a
“deckchair explorer” could ask for: 21 polar bears, walruses by the
hundreds, narwales and even one blue whale, all under an almost
cloudless sky day and night. Somewhat disappointing – but more
disquieting – was the scarcity of ice in today’s Northwest Passage,
compared with my experience from the same voyage in 1992, when an
icebreaker was needed for a week on a stretch choked with ice, which
was now covered in less than two days without any icebreaker
assistance.
Regardless – a voyage through the Northwest Passage still holds it’s
place as one of the most intriguing and fascinating adventures for any
seasoned sea traveller, as hopefully sustained by the pictures shown.
Thanks Bard – as always another interesting report with superb photos.
