Inter-City Taxi (Sherut) Service
Sherut taxi service, in which the passenger pays a flat rate for an individual seat in a taxi,
operates regularly between Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, Ben-Gurion Airport, Bnei Brak, Haifa,
Beersheba and Eilat. Fares are reasonable, often similar to intercity bus fares. Sherut service to
Tel Aviv is also available on Shabbat from the vicinity of the Central Bus Station and from Jaffa
Road across from Zion Square.

City Taxi Service
Several taxi companies in Jerusalem work on a 24-hour basis, some including Shabbat. A taxi
(monit in Hebrew) may be ordered by phone. In the city, fares are calculated by an electronic
meter, which operates according to Tariff 1 (5:30 A.M.–8:59 P.M.) or Tariff 2 (9:00 P.M.–5:29 A.M.as
well as Shabbat and holidays ). For locations outside the city, fares are generally agreed upon
in advance. Note that taxi drivers are required by law to use the meter, and if you request the
driver must give you an official receipt from the electronic meter.

Inter-City Train Service
After a six-year suspension, Israel Railways reinstated service to Jerusalem in April 2005. The
historic scenic route between Jerusalem and Tel Aviv was rebuilt and upgraded and a new train
station opened in Malcha, near the Jerusalem Mall, replacing the old station in Abu Tor.
Currently, 30 trains on the suburban line, 15 in each direction, travel daily (except on Shabbat)
between Jerusalem and the Central Tel Aviv train station or continue to the Kfar Saba/Hod
Hasharon station. The trip to Tel Aviv takes 73 minutes. Egged buses that stop at the Malcha
train station include 4, 4( אfrom Mount Scopus), 6, 6 ,אand 24 (from Givat Ram). For
information about the route, stations, and fares, check the Israel Railways website
or call: Tel. 03-5774000 or *5770, Sunday-Thursday: 6:00 A.M.–
11:00 P.M., Friday: 6:00 A.M.–3:00 P.M., Saturday evening: from departure of the first train to
12:00 midnight.
Telephone Services
We strongly encourage you to rent a cel phone for use in Israel. You can even use the same
company that the students use – Talk ‘N’ Save (www.talknsave.net).
Making International Phone Calls
Rates on international calls dialed directly from Israel are often cheaper than calls to Israel. To
make an overseas call, dial directly using one of the three companies offering international
service:
012 Golden Lines (Kavei Zahav) dial 012
Barak: dial 013
Bezeq International: dial 014
For example: to call somebody in Manhattan, New York, via Golden Lines dial 012-1-212 and
then the phone number; via Barak dial 013-1-212 and then the phone number. You do not have
to become a subscriber to any of the companies to call through them; however, special deals
are available to subscribers. Information on rates to all countries, subscriptions, operator
assistance and the like is available from the following toll-free numbers:
Golden Lines (Kavei Zahav): 1-800-012-012 or 1828
Barak: 1-800-013-013 or 1833
Bezeq International: 1-800-014-014 or 1845
Note: In recent months several other companies have also entered the International telephone
market and may offer competitive rates and VOIP.
Making Collect and Credit Card Calls from a Public Telephone
From a public telephone, dial 1822 (Golden Lines), 1838 (Barak), or 1848 (Bezeq International)
and tell the operator that you would like to place a collect or credit card overseas call. The
operator will ask for your name and number and will call you back in several minutes. Calls can
also be made at pay phones using a Bezek card purchased at the post office and other
locations.
