World Civilization’s
Activities
Students must accumulate 200 points by completing the activities of his/her choosing. Students
can only do two activities per section (not all 200 points can come from one section). Activities will be
due in 50 point increments. Due Dates: First chosen 50 pts- Sept. 26, A Day; Sept 27, B Day; Second 50
pts- Oct. 10, A Day; Oct. 11 B Day; Third 50 pts- Oct. 24 A day; Oct 25, B Day; Last 50 pts- Nov. 7, A
Day; Nov. 8 B Day. Points can roll over to next due date.
Unit 1 chapter 4 and 12, China
1. Chinese Writing: 25
a. Write a paragraph about yourself on lined paper. Then on a BLANK WHITE paper,
with a black marker/paintbrush translate your paragraph into Chinese calligraphy.
2. Qu Yan and the Dragon Boat Festival: 40 (i, ii); 55 (i-iii)
a. Each year Chinese Americans gather in New York City for the Dragon Boat Festival.
The Festival is to commemorate the death of the famous Chinese poet, Qu Yan who
drowned in the Milo River. The dragon boat races reenact the attempt to reach Qu
Yan and rescue him. The boats hold 20 paddlers, and are 40 ft. long.
b. Plan a pretend festival for someone important in your community (can be alive or
deceased). You must include in your activities:
i. Activities for the festival
ii. Create a flyer or brochure for your festival
iii. Write a1 ½ - 2 pg. (Double spaced) paper describing the history of your
festival, why you chose the person, and the festivals importance to the
community.
3. Research Paper: 75
a. Write a 2-4 page paper (double spaced)
b. It can be a biography of a prominent person in China’s history (Gengis Khan, Laozi,
etc.) a specific dynasty (Han, Qin, Zhou, Shang, etc.) a religious belief (Buddhism,
Confucianism, etc).
c. 3 sources that are cited in a bibliography (Only 2 from the internet)
4. Geneology (can be repeated once): 45 (a-c); 5 additional pts for each generation after the
required 4 generations.
a. Family history and geneology is very important to the Chinese. The Chinese believed
that their ancestors protected and guided them. Therefore, they worshiped their
ancestors and did things that were pleasing to them.
b. Map out your family history or family tree beginning with yourself then going back 4
generations on one side of your family and 3 on the other side of your family.
c. Draw it on a blank sheet of paper
Unit 2 Chapters 5 and 6; Greece
1. Explaining Nature: 45
a. The Greeks had a myth or a story to explain different natural events such as
thunder, lightening, changing of the seasons, snow, volcanoes, why leaves change,
etc.
b. Write your own story or myth of why one of these things would happen in nature.
Be as creative as you want!
c. 1-1 ½ pgs double spaced
2. Greek God and Myth: 35 (i-ii); 50 (i-iii); 70 (i-iv)
a. Create your own Greek God
i. Create a name
ii. describe them in great detail (Clothing, physical traits, etc.) or you can draw
a picture
iii. What powers do they have and why are they worshiped (for rain, sun, fire,
better cooking, dancing, or skateboarding skills, for more intelligence, etc.
what would you worship someone for?)
iv. Write a 1 ½-2 page paper double spaced explaining your God’s myth, their
life, background, and their importance to you.
3. Greek philosophers research paper: 75
a. Write a 2-4 page paper double spaced about a Greek philosopher of your choosing
i. Give a short biography of their life
ii. Discuss their ideas, what they taught, etc.
4. Greek Theater: 50 (a-c) 75 (a-d)
a. The theater was very important to the Greeks. They were the first to write plays
with dialogue involving conflict and emotion.
b. Read pages 136 and 137 of your text book that describes Greek theater.
c. Write a short one act play that follows Greek traditional theater
d. For extra points you can do this in a group of 4-6 and record it onto a dvd or
perform your play in front of the class with costumes, props, and memorized lines.
Unit 4; Chapter 9; The America’s
1. Creation Myths: 45 (a-c); 50 (a-d); 55 (a-e)
a. Read page 201 in your textbook
b. People in Ancient America’s had myths about how things were created or where
they believed people came from etc.
c. Write your own creation myth of how an object came to be; for example, create a
myth of how ice cream was invented, the sport of baseball came to be, where
televisions or computers came from, etc. 1 ½ -2 pages double spaced
d. After you have written your myth, research the truth about how that item was
invented and attach it to the end of your 1 ½ -2 page double spaced paper making
the entire paper over 1 ½ -2 pages.
e. For extra points you can create illustrations for your myth
2. Become part of our tribe!: 40 (a-b) 55 (a-c)
a. Research a Native American tribe of your choosing. (can be in North or South
America)
b. Write a short one page report about the tribe (where were they located, what did
they believe in, were they farmers or hunters and gatherers, what did they live in,
what was their style of dress, etc.)
c. Create a poster or a brochure with pictures and an explanation of why someone
should join your tribe and why it is the best.
i. Include pictures, tribal crafts, pictures of where you live, etc to make
someone want to join.
Unit 5 Chapter 11; Islam
1. Your own Prayer Rug: 60 (a-b) 75 (a-c)
a. Look at the picture on page 253 and read the short two paragraphs about
Muslim prayer rugs
b. On a blank sheet of white paper or larger create your own prayer rug (it can be
as intricate and detailed as you want, it does not have to be as detailed as the
example on page 253)
i. Each color, picture, and border means something to the artist or person.
Pick colors and pictures that mean something to you, things that are
symbolic to you.
c. Write a short description on the back of your paper describing why you did what
you did, why you chose the colors and pictures you chose, etc.
2. “The Thousand and One Nights”(a-b can be repeated 3 times): 50 (a-b); 60 (a-c); 75 (a-
d)
a. Read a story of your choosing from the Thousand and one Nights collection
(look at page 253).
b. Individually write a 2 page paper double spaced giving a summary of the story
you read and explain what you liked and what you did not like about the story.
c. Read the story and then if available, watch the movie of the story (Aladdin, etc.)
Add one more page to your two page paper explaining how the story and the
film were alike or different, which did you like better?
d. In groups of 4-6 act out one of the stories and perform in front of the class with
costumes and props or record it on a dvd to be shown to the class.
i. You could change the story to make it take place in todays world or in
your community etc. (How would Aladdin be different if it was written
in today’s world?)
Unit 6-7 The Middle Ages and the Renaissance
1. Royal Family Tree (can be repeated 3 times): 40 (a-b); 50 (a-c)
a. Research a prominent royal family or bloodline and draw out the family tree
b. You must research at least 6 generations
c. Tell where the line started and which country the line is in today
2. Research a Renaissance Artist: 75
a. Research an artist from the Renaissance era
b. Write 2-3 pages double spaced
i. Give a short biography of the artist
ii. Describe some of their work, the style of their work, do you like their work
or not
3. Explorer Newspaper Article: 45 (a-b;) 55 (a-c); 75 (a-d)
a. Pretend you are a newspaper reporter interviewing an explorer from chapter 16.
b. Write at least 8-10 questions that you would ask the explorer about their travels.
i. Such as; when did you begin exploring? How long did you explore for? Etc.
c. Answer the questions as you believe they would answer
d. Write his story in a newspaper article form in 5-10 paragraphs double spaced. Make
it exciting by only adding the highlights, make it an article people will want to read.
