HOW TO USE THIS LIST
An external training provider is any individual or group outside your organization that
helps with your staff training requirements. A training provider can be a private firm, a
professional or safety association, an organized labour group, a government agency, or
a post-secondary educational institution that offers health and safety training programs.
They provide a range of products, from customized development and training to
regularly scheduled courses on various subjects. Training providers may also provide
consultation services, giving organizations advice, guidance, or assistance with meeting
health and safety requirements.
For easy reference, the B.C. Occupational Health and Safety List of Education Training

companies who provide training and consultation services on various workplace health
and safety topics. In response, the WCB has prepared this list of B.C. Occupational
Health and Safety Education and Training Providers. Firms on this list have advised the
WCB that they provide occupational health and safety training and consultation
services. f
The purpose of this list is to provide assistance in locating service providers. The WCB
has only approved those courses identified in the Recognized Training, Education
Network, First Aid and Diving sections of this document. The WCB has not evaluated
the services provided by other firms or organizations. Their presence on this list
does not imply an endorsement or acceptance by the WCB.
The WCB makes no warranty as to the accuracy or completeness of the information
listed, or to the quality of the services provided. The WCB assumes no liability for any
damages or loss suffered as a result of any inaccuracy, or incompleteness therein, or

CHAPTER 1
HOW TO CHOOSE A SERVICE PROVIDER
There is no magic formula for selecting a service provider for your organization. The
B.C. Occupational Health and Safety List of Education & Training Providers provides
only a list of possibilities to choose from, and some guidelines by which to make your
selection. There is no shortcut to making an informed decision; only by spending time
and effort in initial research will you be able to target the right service provider for your
firm. This chapter provides some guidelines to assist you with finding a qualified service
provider.
Where do you find potential service providers?
Start searching for possible service providers in your area by looking in Chapters 3, 4 or
5 of this document, or phone the WCB Prevention Division at 604-276-3100 or toll free
in BC at 1-888-621-SAFE(7233).
When you attend conferences, look for conference speakers whose approach fits your
organization's needs. Networking with colleagues and others in the industry may also
help identify more possibilities. Industry safety associations, professional groups,
medical associations, departments of labour, workers' compensation boards, Internet
Web sites and discussion groups, and even advertisements in safety, training and
professional magazines can provide potential referrals.
How do you define your needs?
Before approaching prospective training organizations, you must have a clear idea of
what you want. Discuss ideas with colleagues and all interested workers within your
organization to define the type of work you expect the service provider to do. Service
providers may provide standard course(s) to meet your needs or you may require
services customized to your workplace.
Who are the professionals in the field of OH&S?
Ergonomists
Ergonomics is a body of knowledge about human abilities, human limitations and other
human characteristics that are relevant to design. Ergonomic design is the application
of this body of knowledge to the design of tools, machines, systems, tasks, jobs, and
environments for safe, comfortable and effective human use. From BCPE

Hygienist
An industrial hygienist is a professional dedicated to the anticipation, recognition,
evaluation, and control of environmental factors arising in or from the workplace that
may result in injury, illness, impairment, or affect the well-being of workers and
members of the community. Industrial Hygiene is considered a "science", but it is also
an art that involves judgement, creativity and human interaction. From AIHA

Occupational Health Nurse
Occupational health nursing is the specialty practice that provides for and delivers
health care services to workers and worker populations. The practice is autonomous
and focuses on the promotion, protection, and restoration of workers' health within the

How do you evaluate a service provider's qualifications?
Once you have selected several possible providers who offer the services you need,
decide who can best help you by assessing their qualifications.
Professional credentials
• How experienced is the trainer in your industry?
• What are the trainer's qualifications?
• Can an independent group attest to this trainer's qualifications?
• What special conferences or symposia has the trainer attended in your field of interest?
When were they held?
• What professional associations does the trainer belong to? What grade of membership
does the trainer hold and how long has the trainer held that grade for each association?
Occupational health & safety experience
• How many years has the provider been active in occupational health and safety training
and consultation?
• How many years has the provider been active in your area of interest?
• Does the provider's experience relate specifically to the work you want done or to a
closely related area?
• Can the provider give references, e.g. the last five clients in your area of interest? This
will ensure that not just those clients who will give favourable references will be
identified. Keep in mind that this information may not always be available, as some
clients prefer to remain anonymous.
Once you know the trainer who will work on your project, consider the following:
General training, knowledge & experience
• Has the trainer had special training in adult education?
• Can the trainer customize a standard course for your firm?
• Can the trainer meet the training needs of your workforce e.g. young workers, English
as a Second Language (ESL), learning challenged, etc?
• Can the trainer deliver a standard course in another language?
• Has the trainer a thorough knowledge of WCB regulations, policies, and standards
relative to the training requirements?
• Has the trainer appropriate knowledge of WCB enforcement options and processes?

How do you manage the cost of service?
Some questions you may ask before making your decision may be:
• What is the service provider's fee structure?
• How are clients charged? By the hour? By the day? By the total job?
• Where are the services provided? Can they be provided at your work location(s)?
• How does the service provider treat expenses such as travel, lodging, shipping,
• and report writing?
• Are cost estimates binding?
• What insurance and bonding does the provider have?
How do you define customized training or consultative work to be done?
If you decide your organization requires customized services for its particular needs, you
must clarify precisely what you want done. Have one or more service providers prepare a
project proposal. The following checklist will help you target the best service provider for
your needs:
• Can service be provided at your convenience?
• What will the service provider do? Will the service provider study the problem? Will a
detailed plan of action be provided? What methods will be employed? How will the
results be evaluated? Will current information and methods be provided?
• Can the service provider design or customize training options such as self-paced
workbooks or computer based training, if appropriate?
• What is the expected end result? How will the results be documented and evaluated?
• What is the expected duration of training or services? What is the completion date?
• Do you have the right to review the appointment of a replacement trainer or service
provider?
Ask the service providers for examples of similar work and interview the individuals who
will work on your project. Consider the nature and chemistry of the working relationship
between your organization and the service providers. Check qualifications and references.
Negotiate carefully, communicate information in clearly written documents, and demand
written responses. Choose the provider that best understands your needs and best meets
your expectations, time frame, budget, and other requirements.

Guide to Occupational Health and Safety Information in B.C.
WCB produces this guide which serves as a directory of government agencies, libraries,
educational institutions, associations and unions with varying degrees of expertise in
and information on occupational health and safety. The majority of organizations listed
in the guide are located in British Columbia, although numerous agencies with a
national mandate or service orientation have also been included.
WorkSafeTM Education Network
WCB has developed WorkSafeTM Education courses on various health and safety topics
including joint health and safety committee, safety supervision, MSI prevention and
workplace violence prevention. These courses are offered by a number of WorkSafe

WorkSafe EDUCATION NETWORK
WorkSafeTM Education course materials are prepared by the WCB and taught by local
instructors. There are presently six WorkSafeTM education courses available. Within
each course are four to seven core topics, with optional electives and workshops for
more in-depth information:
- Preventing and Investigating MSI – explains the seven-step Musculoskeletal Injury
Prevention process, identifies risk factors associated with MSI, determines ways to
control identified risks, and applies tools to prevent MSI and conduct investigations
into MSI.
- Hazard Recognition and Control – includes responsibility for workplace
inspections; identification, control and evaluation of hazards; and use of the
Occupational Health and Safety Regulation.
- Joint Health and Safety Committee Training - includes effective health and safety
programs, safety committee functions and responsibilities, workplace inspections,
accident investigations, and use of the Occupational Health and Safety Regulation.
- Preventing Workplace Violence – includes explanations of WCB’s requirements
for protection of workers from workplace violence; as well as risk assessment,
violence prevention, and development of a workplace violence prevention program.
- Supervisor Safety Management – includes supervision of a safe work
environment, safety inspections, accident investigations, and “due diligence.”
- Occupational Health and Safety in Small Business – explains employers’ and
workers’ health and safety responsibilities and describes how to practice due
diligence in carrying them out in the workplace.
Courses generally require seven to 10 hours of class time, and may be scheduled over
one or two days, or spread over half-days or evenings. A certificate is issued on the
successful completion of each WorkSafeTM education course.
