We all know adults who are concerned about their weight and have tried to lose a few pounds. But what about children? How

can you know if your child is just going through a growth spurt or is really gaining too much weight? For some cultures a

child being chubby is seen as being healthy and more loved. But recent studies show that at least one in five children are

overweight. Being overweight as a child can cause serious physical and emotional problems that can last a lifetime.

Overweight Children are:

At higher risk for developing diabetes and high blood pressure as children or as adults

At higher risk for developing heart disease, stroke or cancer as an adult

Often are teased and may have a harder time making friends

More likely to develop eating disorders and be overweight as adults

If you think your child may be overweight or is at risk for being overweight, here are some things

you can do:

n Talk with your child’s doctor and determine if your child is overweight. If there is a med-

ical condition which is affecting your child’s weight, your doctor will tell you what the best

treatment is.

n Have healthy snacks for your child - cut up fruits and vegetables - and have

n

them easily available for your child.

n Buy low fat products like lean meat and check with your

child’s doctor about low or non-fat milk.

n Don’t insist that your child finish every meal that may

be solid or fluid in content.

n Remind your child to drink lots of water, instead of

soda or juice.

n Limit TV and electronic game time.

n Encourage active and safe play time or sports

n Don’t use food for comfort or as a reward. Be supportive and let your child know they are

wonderful and loved.
