Crop Insurance
1) Name of the Scheme: National Agriculture Insurance Scheme (NAIS)
2) Objectives:
a) To encourage progressive farming practices, high value inputs & latest technology in Agriculture.
b) To stabilize farm income, particularly during
disaster years.
3) Year of Start: Kharif 2004
4) Programme implementing Agriculture Insurance Co. Of India Ltd. Regional
Agency (PIA) : Office Chandigarh, Operational Modalities fixed
by GOI.
5) Insurance Coverage:
Drought, Dry Spells, Storm, Hail Storm, Cyclone, Typhoon, Inundation, Land Slide, Natural Fire,
Lightening, Pests & Diseases.
6) Farmers Covered:
All farmers, share croppers, Tenant farmers, growing notified crops in notified areas.
On Compulsory basis:
Loanee farmers availing loan for Seasonal Agriculture Operations (SAO) from Financial
institutions (Banks).
On Voluntary Basis:
Non Loanee farmers who opt for the scheme.

Rabi Season: Wheat, Mustard, Potato
Unit of Insurance :
Originally it was District upto Rabi 2006-07, Tehsil as a unit was adopted from Kharif 2007 &
Village as a unit has been adopted form Kharif 2009.
Notification:
The State Notifies Crops/Areas to be covered at the beginning of each season in accordance with the
decisions of State Level Coordination Committee (SLCC) on crop insurance & administrative
approval of GOI for implementation. Vide GO. No. 220- Agri. of 2002 dated 10-7-2002 crop
insurance scheme introduced in J&K. Subsequently Vide GO no.
Kharif 2009 No. Agri/B- 297/2005/II dated 4-06-2009 & Rabi 2009-10
letter no. Agri/PC/B/Genl/297/05/II dated 26-10-2009 the
scheme is continuing in the state of J&K for the year 2009-10.
10) Loaning Period: Kharif : Ist of April to Sept. 30th
Rabi: Ist of Oct. To March 31st
11) Subsidy on premium:
10% subsidy on the premium is available in respect of small & marginal farmers (having land up to
2 Ha) to be shared equally by the GOI & State Govt.
