A. Three Objects/Four Sources of Light /32
    Objectives:
           - Become familiar with various techniques for shading and shadowing
           - Understand how the location of a light source changes the shading and shadowing of an
                object
           - Understand how shading appears on a variety of shapes
           - Use shading to create dimensionality on various objects
    Method:
           - Using two pages in your sketchbook, you will divide both pages in half from top to
bottom, drawing a line that separates the two halves
           - About half-way from top and bottom in each quarter, you will draw these four shapes,
                approximately this size:

           - In all four quarters, you will need to indicate the following light sources:
#1 : Top right corner #2: Top left corner
#3: Bottom right corner #4: Bottom left corner
          - You will shade each object according to where the light source is located. You will also
provide a shadow for the object if appropriate.
    Evaluation:
          - You will be graded on accurate shading, as well as effort in technique
          - The total exercise will be graded out of 32 marks  2 marks for each shape
POOR (0 marks for each shape)
                  - Shading is inconsistent with light source
                  - Shadow is inconsistent with light source
                  - Technique is messy, shapes are too quickly or messily drawn
GOOD (1 mark for each shape)
                  - Shading is consistent with light source
                  - Shadow is consistent with light source
                  - Technique and shapes are messily or too quickly done
EXCELLENT (2 marks for each shape)
                  - Shading is consistent with light source
                  - Shadow is consistent with light source
                  - Technique and shapes are done very neatly, and effort is apparent
B. Shading from Life /48
     Objectives:
            - Transfer shading skills from geometric shapes to real-life, more complex shapes
            - Use a real-life source to assist you in creating a piece of art
     Method:
            - You will choose 3 objects from the classroom that you can use as sources
            - These three objects MUST DIFFER IN GENERAL SHAPE
            - The objects you choose should vary in difficulty - that means that not all three objects
should be “easy” - challenge yourself!
            - You will draw the object as it appears on the table in front of you
            - You will accurately portray the shading of the object, using a specific light source
            - Each object will be drawn on its own page, taking up the majority of the page (actual
size if the object is smaller than the page)
     Evaluation:
            - Your drawings will be worth 16 marks a piece, and will be graded according to the
                 following rubric:

C. Creation of Shaded Environment /16
      Objectives:
             - Use creativity to create a fantasy landscape
             - Use shading techniques and knowledge of light source to shade artificial, organic objects
      Method:
             - You will create a complex fantasy landscape/environment that contains no discernable
human creations (e.g. buildings, cars, machines, etc.)
***This landscape must be completely organic***
             - On one page of your sketchbook, you will draw a rectangle of these specific dimensions:
                                                     7” by 5”
             - Within this rectangle, you will create your ARTIFICIAL, ORGANIC environment/landscape
***It might be a good idea to plan out your drawing by sketching ideas before
             beginning the good copy***
             - You will be shading your environment/landscape according to a SINGLE LIGHT SOURCE
or your choosing. All of your shading and shadowing should be consistent with this single
                  light source
             - Your shading and shadowing should give the piece DEEP DEPTH (the
environment/landscape should look 3-dimensional, like we could step into the page)
      Evaluation:
             - You will be graded on this assignment using the following rubric:
