Tom Bedell, a member of the Board of Regents, State of Iowa, said yesterday he hopes his
resignation from a board “embroiled in a controversy with The University of Iowa” will clear the
way for Gov.-elect Chet Culver to set an education agenda and make his mark on the board
through new appointments, the Gazette reported. Meanwhile, the UI Student Government
became the latest group to call for a change in board leadership with a 45-1 “no confidence” vote.
2006 set to be USA’s third-warmest year on record
2006 is poised to be the third-warmest in the contiguous U.S. since records began 111 years
ago, government weather forecasters reported yesterday. Overall, 2006 is on track to be the
sixth-warmest for the planet. Including this year, forecasters say six of the seven warmest years
on record have occurred since 2001 and the 10 warmest years have occurred since 1995.

INDIVIDUALS INVITED: People ages 25 to 60 without history of neurological disorders are invited to participate in a study
analyzing effects of an anti-epileptic drug on cognition and driving simulator performance. Participants will receive study
medications for three months. Five visits of four to six hours to the research clinic are required. Researchers recommend
avoiding driving or operating machinery while participating in this study. Compensation is $465.25 for study completion.

OVERWEIGHT FEMALE VOLUNTEERS aged 18 to 50 years who have been diagnosed with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome
(PCOS) are invited to participate in a research project involving tests to assess risk for heart disease. The study involves
two visits to the General Clinical Research Center and radiology. The first visit will last about 1½ hours and the second
lasts about 45 minutes. Participants should be nonsmokers, weigh more than 180 pounds, and not be taking Metformin.
