SPACE COAST HONOR GUARD
2010-2011
The Space Coast High School Honor Guard proudly represents Space Coast High School
at performances and competitions throughout Guard the county and state. Members of the Honor
Guard, including the Drill Team and Color must recognize their actions are scrutinized more
closely than those of cadets not associated with such an activity. Members must understand and
accept being a part of this team is a privilege that comes with a great deal of responsibility.
I. Purpose of the Honor Guard
A. Promote and uphold the Air Force Core Values of Integrity First, Service Before Self, and
Excellence in All We Do.
B. Represent Space Coast High School (SCHS) by presenting our nation’s colors at events and
activities here at the school or anywhere in the surrounding area.
C. Represent Space Coast High School to the highest standards by preparing for and excelling at
various drill competitions throughout the state.
D. Encourage leadership qualities and develop life-long social skills of team members.
E. Provide opportunities to develop, increase self-confidence and self-esteem, and to promote
excellent academic performance.
II. Requirements/Eligibility
A. Honor Guard requirements take priority over other extracurricular activities.
B. Team members MUST attend ALL required activities, such as practices, demonstrations,
performances, competitions, and fundraisers.
C. A Team member may only have ONE unexcused absence throughout the year. Excused
absences are defined in the SCHS Student Planner as those that are “due to court dates, religious
holidays and doctor’s visits”. Any team member absent for the day or checked out of school
prior to seventh period, will be considered excused. The only exception will be if you know you
will be absent for any other reason than identified above, you must give a 5 day written notice,
signed by a parent or guardian, to either Colonel Kniseley or MSgt Williams. The first unexcused
absence will result in a suspension from the team and the second will likely result in dismissal
from the team.
D. Furthermore, a suspension can take place for the following reasons (but not limited to):
1. Not following guidelines listed in the contract
2. Failure to arrive to event (as listed in B. above) on time
3. Disciplinary actions handed down to team member by any SCHS faculty member
4. Bad attitude, poor military bearing, or disrespectful to an instructor or fellow
team member.
5. Poor grades, especially uniform inspection grades

E. Also, as stated in the SCHS Student Planner, no cadet will be allowed to participate until all
equipment, uniforms, or financial obligations are cleared with the school.
F. As you can see, we will be treating the Honor Guard team member requirements just as would
be expected in any varsity sport offered at Space Coast Jr/Sr High School. As such, we will also
have a strict academic policy in place. In order for members to be eligible to practice and/or
perform, they must maintain appropriate grades and credits as outlined by the SCHS Student
Planner. Honor Guard members must maintain a “2.0” GPA or better in their classes at the
conclusion of each grading period to maintain eligibility.
III. Conduct
A. By accepting the privilege/honor of being a member of the Honor Guard, a team member
accepts the responsibility of being “the elite” and the fact his/her actions are more prominent than
those of persons not associated with such an activity.
B. Because of this prominence and because members represent SCHS, exemplary behavior is
mandatory at ALL times, anywhere in the community of SCHS and at all functions where team
members are recognized as representatives of SCHS.
C. Proper appearance is required at ALL times, with clothing appropriate to the occasion.
Furthermore, failure to achieve a minimum uniform inspection score of an 80% may result in a
suspension or dismissal.
D. Excessive public display of affection is never considered appropriate, especially in uniform.
Failure to comply with this standard during uniform wear days may result in a suspension or
dismissal.
E. Smoking or drug usage (including alcohol) is not allowed at any time. The consequences are
explained in the SCHS Student Planner (immediate dismissal from the team).
F. Members must not display improper behavior in class or at school, including but not limited to:
skipping class, cheating, using or checking cell phones, or being late.
G. Poor conduct/behavior under any circumstance may result in warnings, suspension, or removal
from the team. Inappropriate behaviors not only reflect on the individual, but can also affect the
image of the entire FL-20082 Cadet Corps and your instructors.
IV. Practices
A. Members must dress out for all practices unless otherwise notified. Clothing and shoes should
be appropriate for the activity.
B. No cell phones are allowed at practice. They should be turned off once practice begins. If calls
need to be made in case of emergency, they must be approved by Instructors first.

D. Additional practices may be scheduled as needed. This will be done with as much notice as
possible and the schedule will be posted on the AFJROTC website.
E. Missing part of practice for another school activity or BCC attendance may be allowed, but
only if prior written notice is provided 5 days before as outlined in paragraph II D above.
V. Performances
A. Arrive on time (tardiness will not be tolerated) with complete and full uniforms. This includes
hair and make-up before arrival. If member is late, doesn’t have all uniform items, or is
not within grooming standards, he/she may not be performing.
B. Members will sit as a group, separate from family and friends, at competitions in appropriate
uniform combination.
VI. Competitions
A. The members selected for competition will be selected by the instructors on the following
criteria (not limited to):
1. suspension status or history including academic standing
2. attitude and work ethic
3. ability level and technical skill level
B. Members are required to attend ALL competitions whether scheduled to compete or not.
C. All members will arrive and leave with the team on the team bus. If a member is to ride home
differently, they will need to have a note giving permission to ride home with parents prior to the
competition.
D. Competition may require extra time, effort, and financial support.
VII. Fundraisers
A. All fundraisers are mandatory for ALL members.
B. If a member is not able to be at a fundraising event, it is the job of that member to inform an
instructor immediately.
