Only VMware platform to be focussed and

requirement chart is drawn

Description

Got the hardware issued as discussed in the Gantt chart

The hardware acquired was installed

Research whether vSphere or VMware hypervisor satisfies our requirement

VMware vSphere vs. Citrix Xenserver vs. Microsoft HyperV

Researching Citrix Xenserver

Citrix Course – Introduction to Xenserver continued

Communication with Citrix customer service

Citrix Course – Introduction to Xenserver

Research on making VM's in Citrix Xenserver

Installing Xenserver for the first time on bare bone hardware (HDD)

Consulted Citrix forums, teachers, students for the issues and related

solutions

On researching it is found that Citrix Xenserver interacts with system

hardware differently than VMware vSphere

Bios of the workstation hardware is reconfigured to use the virtualized

technology

Xenserver is installed on bare bone hardware and installation seems

successful

It is decided that instead of installing Xenserver directly on hardware install

it through VMware WS or vCenter on one of the workstation in the Server

lab

VMware vCenter or VMware Workstation 7.1 and later can be used to

upload a VM to Xenserver

VM’s are converted to Citrix platform extension as well as open format to

test their working in Citrix Xenserver

Group decision is made to focus only on VMware platform due to

unavailability of hardware resources as well as time constraint

Raid card is installed in the new WS as well as the three Solid State drives

Absent due to sickness

Network needed for the project needed a rework to update key elements

Network was updated according the changed needs of the project focussing

on local area network

Documentation assigned to each member keeping in view the dead line to

submit all the project documentation by Friday. Outline to be discussed with

Colin for approval

Colin guided us to make vital changes in the project changes and approved

the format

discussion

VMware vSphere is required

Researching on Citrix Xenserver

Citrix customer support inefficient, too many security checks

Course in progress

Citrix login system authentication issues

Course completed-Introducation to Xenserver

Different file extensions used compared to VMware

Issues with installation

No one tried the Citrix platform so help is limited

Bios needs to be reconfigured

Citrix Xenserver needs Intel virtualization technology for

directed I/O (VT-d)

Xenserver is not acquiring an IP address

Installation successful and Xenserver has an IP

File extension of VM file from Citrix and VMware platform are

different

It takes time to convert VM’s between VMware and Citrix

platform

Considerable research is needed for virtualization platforms

other than VMware

SSD’s are quite fast to act as a SAN

Absent due to sickness

Team work

Still cannot decide. Need more data.

Citrix platform is interesting

Citrix Xenserver support is minimal

Structure of Citrix Xenserver

Citrix Xenserver is an interesting platform

Unprofessional technical support from Citrix

An excellent alternative to VMware platform

VM's need to be converted to file extensions used by Citrix Xenserver

Research needed for resolution of installation issues

Citrix virtualization platform is not widely used

Fix the BIOS setting to try installation again

Processor should support VT virtualization and I/O virtualization (VT-d)

Processor supports VT but does not support VT-D

VT-d is needed for Xenserver

Either the VM’s have to be converted to an open format or convert to Citrix extensions. VMware

VM’s cannot be used in Citrix virtualization platform.

It is better to make new VM’s for Citrix platform and keep as backup in case of need.

VMware platform is most versatile virtualization platform as it can emulate the hardware needed

to run virtualization

SAN should be bought separately as SSD’s have storage limitation even though they are quite fast

Absent due to sickness

Changing strategy with need and time is the key

First develop a local area network that is self-contained and then plug that network into wide

area network when required

Documentation should have started earlier

Always take advice of your teacher when in confusion
