Boa Constrictor by Shel Silverstein

Oh, I'm being eaten

By a boa constrictor,

A boa constrictor,

A boa constrictor,

I'm being eaten by a boa constrictor,

And I don't like it--one bit.

Well, what do you know?

It's nibblin' my toe.

Oh, gee,

It's up to my knee.

Oh my,

It's up to my thigh.

Oh, fiddle,

It's up to my middle.

Oh, heck,

It's up to my neck.

Oh, dread,

It's upmmmmmmmmmmffffffffff . . .

It's Dark in Here by Shel Silverstein

I am writing these poems

From inside a lion,

And it's rather dark in here.

So please excuse the handwriting

Which may not be too clear.

But this afternoon by the lion's cage

I'm afraid I got too near.

And I'm writing these lines

From inside a lion,

And it's rather dark in here.

One Inch Tall by Shel Silverstein

If you were only one inch tall, you'd ride a worm to school.

The teardrop of a crying ant would be your swimming pool.

A crumb of cake would be a feast

And last you seven days at least,

A flea would be a frightening beast

If you were one inch tall.

If you were only one inch tall, you'd walk beneath the door,

And it would take about a month to get down to the store.

A bit of fluff would be your bed,

You'd swing upon a spider's thread,

And wear a thimble on your head

If you were one inch tall.

You'd surf across the kitchen sink upon a stick of gum.

You couldn't hug your mama, you'd just have to hug her thumb.

You'd run from people's feet in fright,

To move a pen would take all night,

(This poem took fourteen years to write--

'Cause I'm just one inch tall).

Spongebob by Natalie Brookman

Spongebob is a nice guy

He wears a red tie

And he’s not shy

But he still does cry

And he seems like he won’t die

His friend Squidward

Wonders

Why

He

Wont

Go

Bye

4

Dogs by Natalie Brookman

Oh dogs, oh dogs, oh I wish I had a dog.

It could be a small puppy,

To a large adult,

Oh dogs, oh dogs,

It could have red and white spots,

Or purple and yellow polka dots,

Oh dogs, oh dogs,

Won’t you get me one?

Tomatoes by Natalie Brookman

Tomatoes, tomatoes, I hate tomatoes,

The red and juicy things,

Tomatoes, tomatoes, I hate tomatoes,

Whenever I eat them, my stomach stings,

Tomatoes, tomatoes, I hate tomatoes,

Why were the found?

Tomatoes, tomatoes, I hate tomatoes,

They must be pound! *Squish*

O Me! O Life! by Walt Whitman

O ME! O life!... of the questions of these recurring;

Of the endless trains of the faithless—of cities fill’d with the foolish;

Of myself forever reproaching myself, (for who more foolish than I, and who more

faithless?)

Of eyes that vainly crave the light—of the objects mean—of the struggle ever

renew’d;

Of the poor results of all—of the plodding and sordid crowds I see around me;

Of the empty and useless years of the rest—with the rest me intertwined;

The question, O me! so sad, recurring—What good amid these, O me, O life?

Answer.

That you are here—that life exists, and identity;

That the powerful play goes on, and you will contribute a verse.

As I Ponder’d in Silence. by Walt Whitman

1

AS I ponder’d in silence,

Returning upon my poems, considering, lingering long,

A Phantom arose before me, with distrustful aspect,

Terrible in beauty, age, and power,

The genius of poets of old lands,

As to me directing like flame its eyes,

With finger pointing to many immortal songs,

And menacing voice, What singest thou? it said;

Know’st thou not, there is but one theme for ever-enduring bards?

And that is the theme of War, the fortune of battles,

The making of perfect soldiers?

2

Be it so, then I answer’d,

I too, haughty Shade, also sing war—and a longer and greater one than

any,

Waged in my book with varying fortune—with flight, advance, and

retreat—Victory deferr’d and wavering,

(Yet, methinks, certain, or as good as certain, at the last,)—The

field the world;

For life and death—for the Body, and for the eternal Soul,

Lo! too am come, chanting the chant of battles,

I, above all, promote brave soldiers.

8

Friendship failure by Natalie Brookman

My friends are mean; they won’t get me what I want for my birthday!

I wanted a pony, a plane, a house!

I wanted a cat, a dog, a mouse!

I wanted a swing set, a park, a playground!

I wanted a slide, a car, and I ALSO wanted-

Wait, you got me something new and divine?

I guess I can wait until next time!
