The next concept

 After we finish with reflections and observations, you

will write a new type of essay.

 You will need to listen to the rhetorical analysis

podcast.

 But today, we will discuss how “visual persuasion”

helps you to gather and make meaning. This is the

beginning of rhetorical analysis.

A picture is worth…

 Maybe not a thousand words, but certainly it conveys

significant meaning.

 You can gather:

 Opinion

 Origin

 Ethos

 Many things from imagery

What can design convey?

What mood is developed? Compared to this?

Academic Design

 Academic writing also has visual design

 It is quite a bit simpler in most cases

 Do not be fooled, it is purposefully simple

 Simplicity is meaningful and useful

Academic Format Choices

 Don’t format essays like this.

 Don’t type essays like this, either.

 Cool text is reserved for some other place.

 Lovely, and not for a college essay.

 Sans serif fonts like these are good for presentations

and websites.

 This font is the most readable of fonts for a college essay.

I require standard MLA

 All of the text book recommendations about

formatting and design are great for many situations.

 I require MLA style formatting.

 This contradicts some of the formatting suggestions on page

47. Please be aware of that.

 Do follow the model and criteria given for formatting on pages

660-667 (Chapter on MLA guidelines).
