BORDERS AND SHADING

Borders

You can add impact to text by enclosing it in a border or partial border.

To add borders (also called rules or lines) to any side of a paragraph or text:

1. Select the text (including the paragraph symbol at the end of a paragraph) or

position the insertion point in the paragraph to which you want to apply borders.

NOTE: If the text consists of a single line or paragraph and you plan to add

additional text after inserting borders, either insert a blank line after your text before

you insert the borders or add the borders after you finish typing all of the text on a

page.

2. Go to “Format > Borders and Shading” and select the Borders tab.

3. In the Borders and Shading dialog box, “Style” box, choose the line style.

4. In the “Width” box, choose the width of the line.

5. You can also choose a color for the line in the “Color” box.

6. In the “Preview” box, click the appropriate buttons to position the borders where you

want them: top, bottom, left, right.

Shading

1. Another way to add emphasis is to use shading. Highlight the word(s) you wish to

shade.

2. To do this, go to “Format > Borders and Shading” and choose the Shading tab.

3. Choose the color you wish to use for shading and whether you want it applied to

“text” or “paragraph”. Click OK.

4. Your word(s) is now shaded.

2. Go to “Format > Borders and Shading” and box your name with any line style and

line width you want. To do this, put your cursor on your name first.

3. Notice that the box goes across the page. This is called “paragraph”. Let’s reduce

the size. To do this, highlight your name and go to “Borders and Shading” and

change “Paragraph” under Preview to “Text.” Put your cursor outside the text box

but inside the paragraph box and choose “None.” This will make the outer box

disappear.

4. To Shade your name, highlight your name and go to “Borders and Shading” and

choose the Shade tab.

5. Choose a color to shade your name with, choose whether you want text or

paragraph, and click OK. (Text will highlight just the word(s); Paragraph will

highlight the entire width of the page.)
