2009-2010 Annual Report 3
Office of Advancement
Dear Friends,
Looking back over 2010, I can’t find enough words to describe the pride I have for this amazing school. Our
faculty and our community are top notch. Every day, through their drive and determination, young men and
women develop into the future leaders of our families, our churches and our communities.
• Mark Ragland ’10 won a spot at the Intel International Science & Engineering Fair in California after
winning at the county and regional levels.
• Mason Short, Class of 2011, won the individual title in the WCAC golf championship.
• The SMR Mock Trial team made it to the Final Four of the Maryland State Bar Association High School
Mock Trial Competition in Annapolis.
• The boys’ basketball team broke three school records and placed in the WCAC quarterfinals.
• Joan Stevens received the Golden Apple Award for excellence in teaching from the Archdiocese of
Washington (ADW).
These successes were a direct result of your support and others like you in the community. Your support to the
St. Mary’s Ryken Fund was instrumental in providing need-based and merit-based scholarships, in ensuring our
faculty received continuing education opportunities, and in creating special academic programs such as STEM,
X-PAX and the Ryken Program.
The success of our students and our school is a team effort. This Annual Report celebrates our team including
our donors who make these successes possible. The Advancement Office, along with the students, faculty and
administration, wish to express our gratitude to all of you who have joined this team. With the guidance of
our Board of Directors, each day we make strides toward our vision of being one of the best Catholic, college-
preparatory schools on the East Coast. With each gift, large or small, we are leading the way. Please know that
SMR is a most worthy recipient of your philanthropy, and that your gifts have been invested wisely and stewarded
properly.
As we set out on the 2011 school year, we face many challenges and many rewards. Yet, we find comfort knowing
that we have been blessed with an incredible team of faculty and administrators, enthusiastic students, and caring
alumni, parents and friends to help us lead the way to another successful year.
Sincerely,
K. Leanne Sanders

students can participate in the STEM enrichment
programs offered here at SMR.
During the 2009-10 academic year, several classes got a chance to visit a few of the facilities at the Naval Air Station Patuxent
River: the honors conceptual physics class saw the horizontal accelerator in action at the Crash Simulation Laboratory (above
left photo) and the honors physics class toured the sound labs.
The “Girls Who Dare to be Geeks” club hosted guest speakers from the base on a variety of topics including Theresa Shafer and
Carol Cooper, who spoke on underwater acoustics, buoyancy and sound propagation; and Dr. Linda Mullen (above right photo),
who spoke on light refraction.
The anatomy class hosted Dr. Jerri Tribble, who directed the students in their dissections of a human eye and heart in the SMR
lab.
Knight Pride
96% of the Class of 2010 took the SAT - more than twice the
national average. SMR has the highest average test scores
and the highest percentage of test-takers in the tri-county
