Perimeter
Perimeter is the distance around an object or
shape
Perimeter
The fence shows the
perimeter of the cow
pasture.
To find the Perimeter
Measure each side, then add the lengths of the sides together.
4 cm
2cm 2 cm 4 cm + 4 cm + 2 cm + 2 cm = 12 cm
4 cm
OR
3 cm
3 cm 3 cm 3 cm x 4 cm = 12 cm
3 cm
Brain Check 1
What operation should you use to
calculate the perimeter of a figure?
Brain Check 2
How many sides of a
square would you need to
measure to find its
perimeter?
Brain Check 3
An inch worm travels around the sides
of the rectangle. How far will it travel
if it starts at the * and comes back to it?
3 inches
1 inch

Area
Area is the number of square units needed to
cover the surface of an object.
Area
To Find the Area
Measure the length of the shape, then measure
the length of the shape. Multiply the length
times the width. The area is always in square
units.
4 miles
4 miles x 2 miles = 8 sq. miles
2 miles
Brain Check 1
What operation
would you use
to find the area
of an object?
Why?
Brain Check 2
How can you find the number of square units inside the rectangle?
10 feet
4 feet
Brain Check 3
Your friend says the area of this figure is 3
square units. Do you agree or disagree? Why?
2 units
1 unit
Something to Think
About !
Why do we need to know what area and
perimeter are?
How do area and perimeter allow us to
determine space within boundaries and
limits?
Area and perimeter are the
same in what ways?
