Objective: Matter has physical properties that can be used for classification.
Properties determine how matter is classified, changed and used.
TEKS: 3.5 A, B, C, D
Lesson: Solids
1. Have a variety of objects out for the students to see. Explain to them that
all the objects are solids. Have the class, using the examples, come up with
their own definition of a solid. Discuss that matter is made of molecules and ask
them how they think the molecules in a solid are and record in their notebooks.
2. Students will use their 5 senses to observe the properties of a pickle. They
will fill in their physical properties chart in their science notebooks.
3. Students will investigate the properties of other solids. They will need
plastic tube (straw), cloth square, a plastic triangle, metal screw, craft stick,
wood cylinder (in our geometry shapes), and wire (paper clip)
Monday
4. Students will fill in the properties of a solid chart as they investigate.
4. If time, vocabulary card for solid
(The first and last matter flipcharts on the wiki are useful. You will want to
preview them and pick the slide you want to use though)
Objective: Matter has physical properties that can be used for classification.
Properties determine how matter is classified, changed and used.
TEKS: 3.5 A, B, C, D
Lesson: Liquid
1. Students will use their 5 senses to record the physical properties of flavored
Tuesday
water.
2. Discuss what the molecules in a liquid might look like.
3. Students will investigate the properties of other liquids. They will need
fabric softener, detergent, colored water, cooking oil, hand soap, plain water,
and corn syrup.
4. In stations or table groups students will fill in the properties of liquids
chart for the liquids.
5. If time, vocabulary card for liquid
Objective: Matter has physical properties that can be used for classification.
Properties determine how matter is classified, changed and used.
TEKS: 3.5 A, B, C, D
Lesson: Gas
Wednesday
1. Pick one of the following investigations to complete with students on gasses:
- Can Air Take Up Space in Water: You will place a cup with a paper towel
in the bottom of it in a cup of water
- Does Air Take Up Space: You will place a Ziploc bag in an envelope, blow
up the Ziploc bag and try to fit it back in to show that gasses take up space
2. Discuss what the molecules might look like and how they know.
3. Vocabulary card for gas.
4. States of Matter Flip book or Brochure
Objective: Matter has physical properties that can be used for classification.
Properties determine how matter is classified, changed and used.
TEKS: 3.5 A, B, C, D
Thursday
Lesson: States of Matter Review
1. Students can work on completing matter flip chart or matter brochure. For the
representation of the molecules you can have them glue cheerios on the front for
the molecules
2. Picture sort: There are pictures of solids, liquids and gasses for the
students to sort, this can be by itself, or you can have them sort them on the
flip chart
