									GREETINGS!
Term 3 opened with a plethora of activities and certainly the school has been an exceptionally busy place. It is
rewarding to see how participative our pupils are and how they embrace every opportunity in order to enhance the
fabric of SAHETI even further. At my conference in Crete, which I attended last term, I felt great pride as SAHETI
has been recognised as the best Greek school in the diaspora. This is an exceptional reputation for SAHETI as we
have all – staff, pupils and parents – worked very hard in order to ensure that our recognition goes beyond the
borders of South Africa. As a Greek school in the diaspora we have a social and cultural responsibility to ensure that
we keep Hellenic language and culture alive and well and I am proud to say that it is exceptionally alive!

SAHETI will close for a short break on Friday 30 September at 12:00 and will reopen on Monday 10 October 2011.

MATRIC PRIZE GIVING
The annual Matric Prize Giving, paying tribute to our top academics, sporting and cultural pupils, will take place on
Thursday 13 October 2011. Details to follow.

                                                                                                          1|Page
the quality of music that she loves so much and for instilling this love of music into her young musicians. We
wish her everything of the best for the future.

                                                             Matrics are inspired
Professional coach and motivational speaker, Johnny
Eliades, recently visited SAHETI School for a motivational
session with the Matrics. In view of the upcoming Matric
examinations he proved an inspiring and highly motivating
                                                             speaker.

Eliades said one’s belief system often limits one’s success.
He said that the gift that you are born with is potential.

You can have all the potential but if you do not believe
you have it, well then you don’t. “You were all born with
Pictured here (L to R): Resiloe Mosala, Carol Makutu, potential. It is up to you to tap into it. If you say you were
Itumeleng More, Daniele Viera, Alexia Galanis, Leon born great and are willing to tap into your potential, you
Papademetriou and Tereza Bakatselos.
                                                             will be unstoppable,” he reminded.

He added that learners often use lack of access to resources as an excuse. By embracing the idea that one does not
need resources, but one needs to be resourceful, Eliades said it was virtually impossible to fail. You can’t fail in your
life; you can only fail to participate. In participating you will learn and grow from your experiences, no matter what
they are. There will come many times in your life where things will not go your way. It is at those moments that you
have the opportunity to grow beyond your expectation. Anything you want in life you can have through visualisation.
This is truly a powerful skill to develop. See your success, feel your success before it happens; this will give you an
advantage over the other people who want something but can’t see it happening before them.

“Your destiny is your decision”, he added. “What you do and don’t do comes down to the decisions you make on
daily bases. Put yourself in the best possible state to make the best possible decisions for yourselves.”

“SAHETI School is only a key to opening doors. What happens when the door opens depends on you,” he explained.
In order to succeed Eliades said it was important to “see it and walk it.” “Dress, walk and talk like success and then
you will achieve success,” he urged.

Eliades further encouraged the Matrics to out go out there and live a life of endless possibilities.
LIVE WITH PASSION.

We thank Johnny Eliades for offering his services to our staff and to our matrics at no charge because he believes in
SAHETI and he is planning to bring his son (who is ten months old at present) to SAHETI!

                                                                                                                2|Page
HIGH SCHOOL SPORT
SAHETI TAKES CHARGE

SOCCER: After being back for 3 days only, SAHETIANS once again demonstrated their sporting ability. Crawford
came into the soccer fixture with a proud record of having defeated several top soccer schools. It has been a long
wait for the SAHETI footballers to see some soccer action in the High School. Soccer is played during the third term.
The teams were keen to start their campaign with a win. The boys’ responded well by losing only one game out of
six.

PRIMARY SCHOOL SPORT
ATHLETICS:
On the 5th of August the Primary School hosted the annual Inter House Athletics meeting. The meeting was won by
Artemis and the best spirit award went to Hermes. Tatiana Christides was awarded the most outstanding
achievement award; Marco Chu won the Victor Ludorum and Natasha Sakota the Victrix Ludorum trophy. Hurdles
were introduced as an official Athletics item at the Inter house for the first time this year. During September we will
participate in two Wednesday and two Saturday meetings. We will not participate in the Prestige Athletics meeting
because of the SAHETI mid-term break.

GOLF & TENNIS
We attended the first Golf league match on Tuesday 06 September at the Wanderers Golf Club. The Tennis season
will kick off next week with scheduled matches on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

CONGRATULATIONS!!
Alexandra Parris represented South Africa at the Commonwealth Karate Games in Sydney, Australia during August.
Alexandra has won gold in the Unison Kata event and placed in both the Kata and Kumite events. The under 10, 11
and 13 Soccer teams have progressed to the final of the Cup competition. The final was played at the Bidvest WITS
stadium on Thursday 11 August. All three teams lost in the finals, but the teams were weakened because of many
players who could not attend the finals due to holiday arrangements. We have undertaken to raise the concern about
the date of the finals at the next Soccer AGM, as it always falls during our holidays. A decision will be taken whether
we will enter the competition in 2012.

                                                                                                           3|Page
GENERAL
The Grade 1 and 2 learners do not participate in Athletics because Athletics South Africa only starts from the age of
under 9. We are therefore offering Cricket and Tennis training as an optional choice only for the grade 1 and 2
learners during September. Although no matches will be played, the learners will benefit from the extra practices.
Swimming will only be introduced after the mid-term break in October when it is warmer.

CONGRATULATIONS
x Our Congratulation go to George Cambanis and Warren Hofmann who have made it to Round 3 in the

MRS TONIA YIANNOULAKIS

Mrs Yiannoulakis started working at SAHETI School on 1 June 2011 and is SAHETI’s Head of Strategic Relationships,
Alumni Development & Officer responsible for Fundraising (shortened version: Head of Strategic Relationships). Mrs
Yiannoulakis is a chartered accountant by profession and is a qualified chartered accounted in three countries. Her
career started out at Deloitte; a profession that took her beyond the numbers and straight to the hearts and minds of
learners. From the outset she was particularly passionate about teaching and always intrigued at the idea of teaching
the young leaders of tomorrow – a desire to make a difference. Education and her love of learning has been a
constant strand throughout her career. Following Deloitte, she took on the position of Director of Education at the

necessary to help drive SAHETI strategy forward.

SAHETI School in association with Gordon Institute of Business Science
launch “Spirit of Youth” programme
Every leader of societal impact will, at some point in their life, have an experience that awakens their desire and
capacity to make a substantial difference in the world. Spirit of Youth is intended to be this experience for young
leaders of potential. By a small change in direction, at this stage of their lives, they can disproportionally have impact
on their immediate peers and society at large.
Phyllis Byars, GIBS programme manager delivered a presentation to the Saheti Management team and Head of
Strategic Relationships, Tonia Yiannoulakis to mark the launch on the “Spirit of the Youth” programme with SAHETI
School. The SAHETI leaners who will be Grade 11 learners in 2012 have been formally invited by GIBS to participate
in the 2012 programme.
The 2011 class had the opportunity to walk the City to meet extraordinary leaders including Reserve Bank Governor
Gill Marcus, former President Thabo Mbeki and the Head of the National Planning Committee Cyril Ramaphosa; where
they engaged with national leaders to get the inside scoop on the country’s happenings and worked in groups to
affect change all across Gauteng. Several of the learners have been chosen from the programme to speak on youth
issues in local South African media and as far as London where three were interviewed for the London Financial
Times.
Participants on Spirit of Youth are selected by submitting an essay to their
schools and three learners will be nominated to represent the School. Sixty
diverse schools already participate and include the following independent
schools: St Andrew’s School for Girls, St Davids Marist, St Mary’s School and
St. Stithians (to name a few). Learners meet one Saturday a month from
February to October to explore the potential of the country and their
leadership therein. For more information visit www.gibs.co.za/soy

Current Grade 10 learners who are interested in participating in the 2012 Spirit
