Scrap Book
How to Make a Scrapbook: 10 Easy Steps
1. Brainstorm ideas:
Will you scrap book the entire novel or a scene?
What pictures will visualize setting, character, and plot? Where will you find
them?
2. Organize your pictures.
What layout will best lead the viewer through the story?
What creative techniques will make your thoughts clear? How will journaling
help?
3. Find your album & paper.—it should accent the story and your interpretation of themes.
4. Find your finishing touches.—look in craft stores for scrapbooking accouterments.
5. Organize your space. ---keep your work organized so materials are not ruined or
misplaced.
6. Create your background and/or borders.—they should relate to the setting, characters,
and themes.
7. Crop and mat your pictures.—the matting should emphasize the message—bold and
dark, light and airy, minimal, childish, jagged and haunting…
8. Start sticking—consider which glues or tapes would work best; there is a variety!
9. Journal, Journal, Journal.
Journaling helps viewers to make sense of your pictures. Your words should help
the viewer to understand your characters, setting, themes and plot depicted in
the pictures.
Will you create captions for your pictures?
Will you journal at the side of your page?
Will you journal within the page, perhaps in a text box equivalent?
10. Add the finishing touches. Small embellishments whether purchased or found can add
meaning to a scrap book—map fragment, button, fabric swatch, pressed flower, line
drawing, news headline…..
