                                                                 It was a milestone birthday for Science on the Go! (SOG!). This fall, SOG!, the Museum’s
                                                                 flagship educational program, celebrated its 20th anniversary of bringing science into
                                                                 the classroom and inspiring both students and teachers to look at nature in a new way.


                                                                 For SOG!, Museum educators develop the curriculum and go into schools to teach the
                                                                 first lesson of each unit. By providing the materials for the rest of the unit, they make
                                                                 it easy for classroom teachers, many of whom do not have a background in science
                                                                 education, to connect their students with nature and science in relevant, intriguing
                                                                 ways.


                                                                 “‘Phenomenal’ is the best way to describe the program,” said Ian Overway, a teacher
                                                                 at Agassiz Elementary in Chicago. “So much of science is hands-on, and the Nature
                                                                 Museum educators have all these great experiments for the students. Last year, they
                                                                 brought in some worms and my students couldn’t get enough.”


                                                                 SOG! reached students in 201 Chicago Public School (CPS) classrooms during the

                                                                 EL VALOR HEAD START
                                                                 When more than 100 El Valor Head Start educators were looking for ways to
                                                                 incorporate nature into their teaching, they picked the perfect place to get guidance.
                                                                 The Nature Museum, which already had a 10-year partnership with El Valor, hosted the
                                                                 educators and provided specific ways to connect the kids, ages 1-5, with nature.


                                                                 “We made it fun, interesting and tried to give them an appreciation for nature right
                                                                 here in the city,” said Rafael Rosa, Vice President of Education.


                                                                 The workshop at the Museum went so well that 1,500 kids from El Valor came to the
                                                                 Museum this spring for nature activities. “We started with a focus on the butterfly, an

                                                                      “It’s pretty, photogenic and has a good story.” Doug Taron,
                                                                      the Nature Museum’s Curator of Biology and Vice President of
                                                                      Conservation and Research, was not talking about the latest
                                                                      Hollywood movie starlet; instead, he was describing the Regal
                                                                      Fritillary butterfly.


                                                                      Many of the butterflies were celebrities in their own right
                                                                      July 12, when Taron released 100 of this threatened species back
                                                                      into nature at Paintbrush Prairie Nature Preserve, one of the
                                                                      Indian Boundary Prairies just south of Chicago. Photographers
                                                                      from newspapers and television stations tracked their every move.


                                                                      “It was an amazing moment when we released this rare
                                                                      butterfly back to the prairies where it belongs,” Taron said.

                                                                      black butterfly. The Regal Fritillary is often confused with the
                                                                      Monarch, but is set apart by the white spots on its hind wings.


                                                                      The Regal Fritillary, considered the poster child for
                                                                      invertebrate conservation in North America, has long
                                                                      intrigued Taron and Vincent Olivares, Director of Arthropod
                                                                      Conservation. As part of the Nature Museum’s Butterfly
                                                                      Restoration Project, they began rearing Regal Fritillaries in
                                                                      the laboratory three years ago in an effort to start a new
                                                                      population. They “over-wintered” the caterpillars at the Nature
                                                                      Museum, but the larvae were not able to survive. This year, the
                                                                      breakthrough came when they put them in covered cages on
                                                                      the Museum’s green roof to provide them the full impact of the
                                                                      winter cold – in a safe setting.

                                                                Guests were transported on the wings of the Monarch through
                                                                the perspectives of award-winning Mexican artists, whose
                                                                works immersed guests in the flight of the Monarch through
                                                                captivating paintings, photography, multimedia 3-D video and

                                                                The Museum was excited to present the exhibition in
                                                                partnership with the Consulate General of Mexico and its
                                                                Mexico 2010 program. Mexico’s First Lady, Margarita Zavala,
                                                                visited the Nature Museum to see the exhibition on August 3.


                                                                Sanctuary resonated so strongly with guests that its stay at
                                                                the Nature Museum was extended for an additional two weeks.

                                                                       A highlight of the exhibition was a living mural created by
                                                                Chicago artist and Michoacán native Hector Duarte, who has long
                                                                   used Monarchs as a theme in his work. Visitors were given the
                                                                 unique opportunity to watch Duarte work his magic throughout
                                                                    the run of the exhibition, so the mural evolved as Sanctuary’s
                                                                                                      time at the Museum passed.

                                                            The Nature Museum’s public programming has always been popular
                                                            with children and families. This year, an initiative to reach more
                                                            adults was extremely well received. More adults attended public
                                                            programs in the last quarter of fiscal year 2010 (357) than in the
                                                            entire previous year (223).


                                                            A major highlight was the packed crowd April 14 for a screening
                                                            of Lords of Nature: Life in a Land of Great Predators. The panel
                                                            discussion that followed featured the filmmakers, regional experts,
                                                            professors and Steve Sullivan, the Nature Museum’s Curator of
                                                            Urban Ecology, and helped frame the important issues raised in the
                                                            documentary for the public.


                                                            The screening and panel discussion were held exactly two years to
                                                            the date after a cougar was shot in Chicago. Two wolf specimens,
                                                            a bear and a bald eagle were on display from the Nature Museum
                                                            Collections; and the Field Museum provided the skull of that cougar
                                                            for the night.

                                                          at the 12th annual Butterfly Ball.


                                                          The 675 guests in attendance helped raise nearly $1.4 million.

                                                          The theme “In Flight” celebrated the migratory path of the
                                                          Monarch butterfly prior to the opening of the exhibition,
                                                          Sanctuary: Flight of the Majestic Monarch. The space was
                                                          decorated by Bukiety Floral with flowers from local nurseries,
                                                          which were replanted in the Nature Museum’s serene
                                                          Woodward A. Wickham Butterfly Garden when the Ball was
                                                          over. Guests dined on food that Limelight sourced 90 percent
                                                          fresh from local Green City Market famers. Signage was
                                                          printed on recycled boards, and the invitations were printed                                  fig. 6B

                                                          Deborah Lahey, CEO and President, said it best: “Whether
                                                          black tie or tie dye, we live our mission every day. It is
                                                          incumbent upon us to set the bar in green galas. We’re thrilled
