About This Document: Librarians love acronyms. The IT folks who are working on expanding the Internet address system appear even more enthralled with acronyms than most librarians. While the Internet, in its Arpanet incarnation, originated in the US with most early content in the English language, the Web has certainly grown worldwide. Content is now on the Internet in many languages and various alphabets. Yet the Web addresses used to navigate this increasingly international virtual information space have, until recently, been somewhat stuck in the ASCII English-language and Latin alphabet-based characters. As the Internet matures, it continues to grow more fully multilingual and international. Run by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, the domain name system's Top Level Domains are set to expand in new international directions. The international expansion has begun. The next few years may see an even greater number of domains and an increasing number of unusual looking ones.
