Statement of Faith
The Nairobi Evangelical Graduate School of Theology is founded on the Bible and
its revelation of Jesus Christ. Our constitution includes the statement of faith of the
Association of Evangelicals in Africa, which all students, teaching staff and faculty
must subscribe to, and which reads as follows:
The Holy Scriptures of the Old and the New Testament (a total of 66 Books) are the
Word of God. It is divinely inspired, infallible, inerrant, entirely trustworthy and
serves as a supreme authority in all matters of faith and conduct (2 Tim. 3:16-17).
God is One. The one God is eternally self-existent in three Persons: Father, Son and
Holy Spirit (Deut. 6:4-5; Mt. 28:19)
Jesus Christ is Saviour and Lord. As God, He was manifest in the flesh. We believe
in His virgin birth; His sinless life; His divine miracles; His vicarious and atoning
death, His bodily resurrection; His ascension; His mediatorial work; and His future
personal return in Power and Glory (Lk. 1:32-33; Jn. 1:1-4; 1 Tim. 2:5-6; 6:13-16).
Holy Spirit is God. As the third Person in the Godhead, He indwells every believer
upon conversion and enables the believer to live a holy life; to witness in power; and
to work for the Lord Jesus Christ (Act. 5:3-4; Mt. 28:19; Acts. 1:8).
Man was made in the image of God and sinless. By choice Man fell out of favour
into sin. In God’s mercy, SALVATION comes to every lost and sinful person freely
and simply by faith in Jesus Christ who shed His blood for sin, and through regen-
eration by the Holy Spirit (Gen. 1:26-28; 3:1-21; Jn.1:11-13, 1Cor. 12:13).
All believers in Jesus Christ are one body, the Church, of which He is the Head (1
Cor. 12:13; Eph. 2:14-22).
Satan is a fallen angel whose intent is to supplant God and frustrate His purpose,
and whose ultimate end is consignment to eternal punishment (Lk. 10:17-18; Rev.
20:10).
Bodily Resurrection of all the dead will take place some day. Believers in Christ
will rise unto everlasting blessedness while unbelievers will rise unto judgement
and everlasting punishment (Rev. 20:11-15; 2 Cor. 5: 9-10).

From the Vice-Chancellor
The 21st century world is an increasingly complex world. Day by day, we
experience the social and sociological realities of living in a global world.
Communication technology now makes it possible to communicate with
the remotest village from virtually anywhere in the world. At the same
time, poverty, disease, and injustice form the daily reality for many.
Against this background, it is not an exaggeration to say that Africa’s
greatest need is for leaders of integrity and excellence. The need for such
leaders is urgent and desperate. This is true not only of the African socio-
political world, but also of the African Church.
Our vision is to be a Christ-centred learning community in Africa,
transforming society. This vision, set beside the above realities of 21st
century Africa, compels us to nurture men and women of excellence and
integrity. It challenges us to develop men and women who understand
God’s word, who understand God’s world, and who can meaningfully
engage the latter with the former. It is a daunting task, but a task that we
must take seriously and not shrink from.
The graduating class of 2006 comprises men and women of diverse
cultural, educational and professional backgrounds. They come from all
over Africa, and now upon their graduation, go back to impact Africa and
the world. It is our prayer and hope that they go out as people of integrity
and excellence; people who will serve the Church and the world with
passion and compassion, with justice and fairness in thought, word, and
deed.
Their graduation theme is “Christian Excellence in the Paradox of a Weak
World” and is based on Philippians 2: 14-15. They understand that their
world is a paradox of progress and regress, justice and injustice, strength
and weakness, faith and unbelief. They also understand the paradox of
Christian ministry: that they will “shine like stars in the universe” only
if and when God’s strength is made perfect in their weakness. It is our
privilege and joy to send them out as the Lord’s servants and ambassadors
into His world.
To the 2006 graduating class I say that the task ahead is not easy but the
Lord is with you. Many have already gone ahead of you. Learn from them
and from the wisdom of their experience. Many more will come after you.
Teach them and lead them with wisdom, patience and humility. I charge
you, “Be leaders of integrity and so transform society for Christ!”
May the Lord keep you and guide you. CONGRATULATIONS!
Dr. Douglas Carew

From the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic Affairs
The Apostle Paul urged the Christians at Corinth to be “steadfast,
unmovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord” (I Cor. 15:58
KJV). That admonition embodies an apparent contradiction – a directive
to stand firm and an order to move forward. One dimension calls for
entrenched inaction; the other signals renewed activity. To be steadfast
and immovable requires one to be as fixed in place as Mt. Kilimanjaro. To
be constantly abounding demands the athleticism and pace of a champion
East African marathoner. So how did Paul expect Christ’s followers to do
seemingly opposite things simultaneously?
Perhaps Paul was asking us to be “unmoved movers.” It would not be
unlike a military aircraft carrier sailing on the high seas. As a military
base that is essentially portable, the ship can move from ocean to
ocean. At the same time, it holds fast to a single identity and a distinct
unchanging mission.
For ministers of the Gospel, to follow Paul’s words is a matter of being
thoroughly grounded and unconditionally rooted in our faith, unyielding
in our attachment to the rock that is Christ Jesus our Lord. It is placing
ourselves and our lives squarely on the foundation of the Scriptures. That
is a prerequisite requirement of the second directive of “giving ourselves
fully to the work of the Lord.” (NIV)
Noah, Abraham, and Moses abounded in God’s work, but they did so
only as they maintained their trust in His promises and His faithfulness.
Paul himself wrote of his being both rooted in Christ and pressing on
toward the high calling of God in Christ Jesus (Phil. 3:14).
As we close out this school year at NEGST, we not only applaud our
graduates, we also celebrate their God-given faith. My prayer is that they
will hold fast to that faith and be “unmoved movers,” always “abounding
in the work of the Lord.”
Congratulations, graduates and members of the NEGST Class of 2006!
May you continue to know God’s presence and power in your lives.
Dr. Dwight Jessup

I will be serving with Scripture Union in Sierra Leone as well as having some
responsibilities for coordinating Scripture Union work in eight other West African
countries. During my time in NEGST, serving as the Treasurer of the Student
Council gave me the opportunity to positively turn around the Tuck Shop
project and lay a solid foundation for good financial management in the Student
Association but most important of all was the unique privilege of becoming the
parents of our first child, Emmanuel. Excellent servant leaders – the only hope for
the Church and Society in Africa. So, NEGST, please stay focused.

doing technical support in computers within the Bible Translation field, all these to
be done within the SIL circle.
Every day at NEGST is special, as discoveries never cease to happen. But if I
were to single out the special of the specials, God taught both my wife and myself
to cultivate our family and our love on top of the academic high demands.
I came to NEGST with so many questions, many of which got answered; now
I am about to leave this place after two years I consider as a transforming
period, a continuation of the previous transformational years with the Lord, and
I leave it with some other questions. As Dr Wood would say, I am confused on
a higher level... But that calls me for further deep digging in my knowledge and
relationship with God. However, these two years are to be treasured within my
heart, mind, and soul forever as God placed me within a great community where
we learn from each other socially as well as spiritually, and within godly people’s
hands where academics makes it the African Eldorado.

Upon graduation, I will be teaching New Testament and Theology at the Bunia
Theological Seminary in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Also I will be
ministering in a local church as a church elder.
In teaching ministry, a certain amount of confidence is expected from the teacher.
Getting my M.Div at has definitively given me more confidence and helped me
realize my professional and spiritual potentials. With so many things to get used
to – language and cultural differences, weather, food, to name only those – living
and studying in a foreign country can be truly hard at first. Yet, my time at NEGST
has been enjoyable, challenging and above all, rewarding!
I will never regret for having come to NEGST which is a school I would
recommend others to join.

I plan to be doing pastoral work after graduating. My unique experience is when
I came to the full realization that one cannot learn without donning-on a humble
attitude. Over the years I have gone through academic experiences and I thought
that I was now well versed. Coming to NEGST taught me that everything is a
fresh experience: different learning experience, different environment, different
caliber of teachers with different teaching styles, different community etc. It is
only when one is willing to be led instead of relying on their past experience that
they can say that they have truly learnt. I believe my store of knowledge has been
greatly enhanced.
I want to say a big thank you to the Almighty God for giving me this opportunity to
study in NEGST; this is one of the stopovers in the long journey we have ahead
with Him. I want to say thank you to my dear wife for believing that a “broke
student” could take care of her – we have had a memorable time at NEGST.
I want to thank my church and family and friends for supporting me through

I will be at Life Spring Chapel as the Missions Director upon graduation.
I am so amazed at how God has been faithful in providing. Thank you all. Thank
you Lord! I wrote a paper in second year and a friend sent me a book saying
I needed to look at a different opinion. I realized that I am now into real-time
theology. My opinion is not just to be taken for granted.
I am on a race to a goal. Studying in NEGST has accelerated the pace towards
the goal. I am nearer to the goal of pastoral leadership than when I began. God
has, through interaction in class, removed the clouds that blurred my view of
my vocation. I will come alongside church pastors and leaders in enhancing
structures that carry the gospel message effectively.

Admission to NEGST was for me an answer to years of prayer, and definitely the
highest point. However, the price I had to pay was beyond me! Thanks be to God,
who will never leave, or forsake us.
I have been amazed at God’s faithfulness in providing for me while at this school.
NEGST taught me to put my trust in God alone.
I’ve deeply appreciated my time here. NEGST is a school I highly recommend for
those seeking training in ministry.

I will be going back to my Church, Nairobi Chapel working in different capacities
with the Music Ministry and the Youth among other responsibilities. I got married
when I was in NEGST. I think this should reflect as an ‘A’ in my transcript
because preparing for the wedding and being in NEGST felt like an extra 12
credit Hour load of work. I think that this was something that has transformed my
life totally. The transition from single hood into married life has been made a lot
smoother by the loving community of people in NEGST. I appreciate the times
when people have generally offered counsel and encouragement. It was even
more interesting to get married to a fellow student.
A low point came especially in my second year when I had classes on Monday at
8:00 am. I really felt tortured after a lot of pumping of adrenalin over the weekend.
I felt (still do) that NEGST should put Mondays as Sabbath for the students
because of how much work and energy they put into the weekend ministries. I felt
Albert Esilaba Outa the school was being inconsiderate.
Well, one of the greatest experiences is interacting with people from different
Kenya
parts of the world and especially Africa. I think my previously stereotyped image
of people from other countries has been redeemed by meeting people in NEGST.
Of particular privilege has been the interaction with other leaders in the student
council. That has transformed how I think about leadership.
When the builders of Nairobi-Kisumu Railway got to Nairobi, they took a rest
because this was the one place with fine weather and not too many animals.
Also it was going to be the one great rest before they take on the ups and downs of
the Great Rift Valley. NEGST has been that place for me. A time to count the cost
and project to what the expectation of the future is. I will recommend it to many.

Upon graduation, I hope to return to my home country, Liberia, to work with CRM
– Africa (Church Resource Ministry). CRM is an interdenominational mission
organization committed to working with Bible Believing Churches in leadership
renewal with the goal of helping local church leaders to clearly identify their call in
ministry and serve with character, competence and courage.
My time at NEGST was a period of relevant transition in which I got equipped to
– by God’s Grace – serve with integrity and discipline in whatever capacity.
NEGST has helped me to discover and appreciate that people of diverse
denominational backgrounds and nationalities can live together in an imperfect
but unique kind of unity that is found in Jesus Christ and be able to achieve great
things unto God’s glory. In other words, NEGST has taught me a special kind of
unity in diversity.
I believe in the vision of NEGST as an Evangelical Graduate School that will
Thomas Sahr Shelwah equip men and women for effective Christian Ministry across Africa and beyond.
Liberia I pray that amidst the ethnic, denominational and national diversity present
at NEGST, God will always raise up leaders who will uphold the international
nature of NEGST and serve with integrity, justice, and righteousness, without
deliberately entertaining the domination of a specific ethnic group, denomination,
or nationality over others at NEGST.
“My name will be great among the nations, from the rising to the setting of the

from my classes. I love NEGST and will hold her dearly always.
If Africa is over 60% under the age of 17, how can NEGST not have a youth
ministry department? We need to get equipped on how to minister to the next
generation or the fastest growing church in Kenya will get a rude shock in the
next generation.

NEGST is a wonderful place for training servant leaders. It has not been an easy
task to grapple with books. I hope to use the knowledge attained here at NEGST
to do ministry more professionally. It’s been insightful, practical and stimulating.

I plan to be training more Christian workers while undertaking some further
studies. In the words of my wife Caroline, “it is at NEGST I have realized the
harmony between high spirituality and academic excellence”. As I aspire to be a
future trainer of African Church leaders, I have all the role modeling I need to be
effective in my ministry. Role models like Professors Cole and Wood,
Drs. Starcher, Raman, Mutua, Sesi, Shaw, Renner, and the rest have left indelible
impression on my spirituality and academic life.
As the new phenomenon of the shift of Christianity towards the global South
excites us, I remain worried about the sad reality in the African Church as
expressed by Dr. Byang Kato that “Christianity in Africa is a mile long and an inch
deep”. My wish therefore is that we engage in taking Christianity deeper than an
inch through teaching that touches lives forever.

to be involved in children’s ministry in Eldoret with an emphasis on bringing
healing based on Isaiah 61. In addition to that, I would be glad to teach at the
University level. Other interests? - Farming, journalism, interior décor, research
work and involving myself in business investments.
I thoroughly enjoyed the Old and New Testament theology courses especially
with their emphasis on bringing justice in our contexts. Dr. Wood facilitated both
courses well and despite not getting excellent grades, I believe these courses
were timely especially for Africans, and particularly Kenyans who are living in a
society riddled with corruption. I hope to apply what I learned in the areas that
God will plant me to bear much fruit for him.

NEGST has been a place of humbling experiences, but a place for high academic
and learning experiences. I thank God because He has been with us as family all
through. Indeed, I have been molded and prepared for holistic ministry.

I will be involved in equipping and training Christian Leadership both in the

My highest point at NEGST was God’s provision for my study when I had lost

my father passed away back home in the DRC and could not be present with my
mother, sisters and brothers during that tragic loss in my life.
I would like to share with NEGST community the challenge Ngara observes in the

Generally, I will be involved in ministerial training (i.e. teaching in a theological
seminary). I would also like to be involved in curriculum issues (e.g. curriculum
development, planning, evaluation, etc). Firstly, having stayed for about three
years now, I have come to learn that NEGST is a faith community. One cannot
survive socially, physically, academically, spiritually and financially without a
complete trust and reliance upon the wonderful and providential hand of God.
Secondly, NEGST is a true loving and passionate Christ-like community.
I have confirmed this since I have been ministered to spiritually, socially and
materially through the loving and passionate hearts of fellow students, staff and
faculty. I have also been aided financially by having part of my tuition paid by
partnering brothers and sisters mostly unknown to me. This is a mystery to me. I
praise God that He answered my petition that He might intervene so that I could
have a breakthrough in my studies at NEGST. Thirdly, I have come to appreciate
the scholarship (academic and practical learning) that is being developed here
at NEGST. Every facility, activity and human resource tends to communicate the
Stanley Kiplang’at Koske core values of NEGST, mainly, excellence, evangelical, integrity.
Kenya Please, uphold, strengthen, develop and implement the vision and core values
that NEGST subscribes to. As you move from being just a theological seminary
to being a Christian University, please don’t be baptized into being a secular
institution. Continue to promote excellence not only in AFRICAN Christianity but
also in GLOBAL Christianity.

After NEGST I will be pastoring at Liberty Community Chapel as well as still
volunteering at the NEGST Extensions Office. I found the outside experience
at NEGST more fulfilling sometimes than the class setting itself. I was once not
able to sit for my exams due to a huge fees balance. The time I was to vacate the
institution based on the same reasons, someone approached me and offered to
pay my fees for the rest of my studies. It was a rare miracle in the recent times.
I value my study at NEGST very much. I was nurtured, and learned how to be
responsible, even in crisis. Theological studies should not only be scholarly, but
more also spiritual. Compromising the latter leads to only career servants.

thank God for His grace and wisdom.
It was also very exciting to learn at the feet of humble and great lecturers with

to study, be taught, interact and make friends with people from all over Africa and
beyond. I’ m very convinced that I am not the way I came here in 2003. Every

I will continue to be involved in cross cultural ministry among Chinese people
in Nairobi. I will also continue to be involved in pastoral ministry in a local
congregation (Mamlaka Hill Chapel). I was involved in both these ministries
before and during my time in NEGST.
Tuesday Chapel, the day of testimonies by various members of the NEGST
community, has been a uniquely NEGST highlight for me. To me, each person’s
testimony or story is its own version of “The Hound of Heaven”, a poem about
“this tremendous Lover” (God) who ever reaches out to us, never gives up on us,
and always gives us what is good for us. Sobered, I leave Tuesday chapel with
the impression that there is no lesser or greater citizen in the kingdom of God -
we are all equally loved and all equally important. It humbles me, encourages me,
Margaret W. Gitau and challenges me to keep growing in compassion for others.

NEGST can arguably be referred to as a melting pot of African, if not world
cultures. This has provided an invigorating environment as we have been
interacting and working together for the last two years.
I will eternally be thankful to all those who have invested in me. I am profoundly
grateful for your prayers and support.

From the time I joined NEGST (late) to date, with an interruption beginning of
2005 due to hospitalization, I have learned a lot in every class I have taken.
Despite being actively involved in the church since 1973, when I got saved, and
preaching to many institutions, I have come to learn a lot at NEGST. I see now
how unfair it is to the members of a church for a Pastor to serve without formal
training. Courses like Systematic Theology I – III and Hermeneutics are real eye-
openers to church governance and bible interpretation respectively. This effort by
NEGST should be perpetuated.
“We can do all, things through Christ who strengthens us”. God has renewed my

“This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person.
The old life is gone; a new life has begun! And all of this is a gift from God, who
brought us back to himself through Christ. And God has given us this task of rec-

longer counting people’s sins against them. And he gave us this wonderful mes-
sage of reconciliation. So we are Christ’s ambassadors; God is making his appeal
through us. We speak for Christ when we plead, “Come back to God!” For God

I shall preach the Gospel in a church in both urban and rural setting. I am
enjoying my studies because we are together with my wife in the same class, a
thing that could very well be considered a “taboo” to some brethren! Extension

study while at the same time working to provide for the family.

My greatest challenge was balancing pastoral ministry, and other responsibilities
with college studies. The grace of God was however sufficient. For someone like
me with ministry responsibilities and experience, interaction with other pastors,
groups, and class discussions gave a great encouragement.
NEGST has made me change my understanding of the church. “My understanding
about church determines the way I do ministry”.
It is one thing to learn and another to pass this information to others. Let’s mobilize
and equip saints that they may make use of their gifts effectively for the expansion
of God’s kingdom.

to his/her place with an empty heart, but with a full mind. I believe that many of
us came here to be equipped that the mind and heart work together so that we
can be effective ministers of the word of God. I can say that God blesses NEGST,
through continuing to hold the good vision of the late Byang Kato. Please,
NEGST, as you continue, be serious on your foundation and continue to bring
honor and Glory to God and to shine in our continent.

Certificate in Christian Ministries Programme
Contacts: B.P. 2587 Kigali Rwanda, c/o jrudasumbwa@yahoo.com
I will be involved in women ministries in Grace Community Church in Rwanda.
I cannot express all I have gone through. However, two things stand crucial: 1)
I have been prepared for various aspects of Christian ministries, and 2) I went
through sickness experiences but God saw me through.
I want to say big thanks to NEGST Community members for the support I have
been having in my up and down.

Some Reflections on my time at NEGST
by Donald Manley, MABS, Class of 2006
My time at NEGST has been both a time of recovery from the trauma of staying through and witnessing the
atrocities of the ten-year brutal rebel crisis in my country and a time of interacting with the worldview of
theological scholars. I thank God for the learning experiences of my time at NEGST and my greatest challenge is
how to bridge the seemingly unconscious gap between scholarship and ministry that transforms lives of ordinary
people – adults, youths and children – for whom Christ shed his precious blood. How do I avoid the temptation
to pride myself as a ‘teacher of the truth (the Scriptures)’ and be ready and willing to ‘take up the cross and the
towel and follow after Jesus’ examples?’
The content of each course was very rich and the reading assignments were most challenging but refreshingly
rewarding. It was most interesting to have a very strong emphasis on the correct direction for reading and
understanding the Bible in the Theology of the Old Testament class and then being told something almost
contradictory in the Book of Hebrews class. The Biblical theology approach of the OT class insists that the Bible
should be read and understood from Genesis to Revelation and in that order. The point is made that several key
texts in the Gospel of Matthew, for example, can only be better understood from their Old Testament references.
But in the Book of Hebrews class, the strong argument was that the early Christians were only able to understand
and relate to the Old Testament as a result of and on the basis of their experience with Christ. Therefore Christians
today cannot correctly approach the Old Testament without the ‘light’ of the New Testament. So how do you
resolve this tension? Well, I guess that is all part of the excitement of scholarship. My progress in Greek is making
me more excited in getting to be able to read the New Testament in its original language. It is necessary to be able
to positively ‘contend’ against the growing popular misinterpretations of Scripture that are offered as spiritual
food in crusades and church.
Some learning experiences from Book Reviews and Reading Assignments
• “Jesus, the Crucified People” by C. S. Song (1996) – I was greatly challenged by Song’s attempt to make the
Christian message find relevance among the suffering Asian people – his people. His critical appraisal of
the traditional interpretations of the Christian faith within the context of the poor oppressed and suffering
people has challenged me to evaluate my Church’s ministry and practice. I do realise that we have almost only
concentrated our efforts and resources on maintaining the status quo of a ‘decent Church for decent people’.
Song has also challenged me to begin to think through a Biblical theology that is not only faithful to Scripture
but also relevant for the poor rural marginalized Sierra Leoneans who are still ‘slaves’ to very harmful
traditional beliefs and practices.
• “Systematic Theology” by Wayne Grudem (2000) – I had always thought that theology is the study of God, or
rather, man’s feeble attempt to explain God. Before the start of the course, I was of the opinion that Systematic
Theology was actually man’s careful (and sometimes, crafty) attempt to reorganise the Bible so as to teach
a particular doctrinal or denominational position. This erroneous opinion was completely dismissed by
my reading of the introduction of Wayne Grudem’s Systematic Theology. Rather than being man’s clever
explanation of God or other Christian doctrines, I have come to learn that Systematic Theology is a synthesis of
all that the Bible teaches on any given truth.
• “Christian Theology” by Millard Erickson (1998) – The theological task as suggested by Erickson has helped me
to appreciate that theology and the study of it should not be restricted to the Church and to Christians. I have
come from the background which sees very little that is Christian in any African culture or tradition. I now
realise that for my theology to be authentic and effective, it must be able to engage with the traditional beliefs
of my culture in such a way that the truth about God would be made plain. My explanation of who God is
and what He purposes to do must be relevant to the worldview of my culture. It must also be contemporary,
practical and applicable.
• “Models of God” by Sallie McFague (1987) –The exercise on the critical review of Sallie McFague’s ‘Models of
God’ was a great exposure to contemporary theology that is driven by human emotion and motivation. Such
theology tends to justify a paradigm shift from firmly held evangelical beliefs in favour of new and sometimes
exciting alternative understandings of God and the world. I was made to realise that much of the Christianity
in Africa has been mercifully protected from the devastating influences of relativism and secularism.
Humanism that promotes a false doctrine of man is making strong in-roads into the African Church through
the prosperity gospel and positive thinking school of thought. I was challenged to develop an apologetics that
would make sense to people from secular and non-Christian contexts.

• “Concepts of God in Africa” by John Mbiti (1975) – I was greatly blessed through my reading of Mbiti’s book.
Although I am not fully convinced that the Supreme Being of the African people is identical to the one true
God of the Bible, I was greatly blessed with the knowledge of how God is understood in and by the various
African tribes. I am motivated to explore the similarity between the God of the Bible and the Supreme Being
some of the tribal people in Sierra Leone believe in.
• The understanding of the truths about God’s nature and attributes, particularly His communicable attributes,
was most helpful for me. It gave me a fuller understanding of us being made in the image and likeness of God.
It is a humbling experience to realise that God chose to share some of His attributes with man, which has given
us greater value and worth.
• In my early years as a new believer, I had no difficulties believing that Jesus is God and the Holy Spirit too is
God but I would not accept that they were equal with the Father. I remember collecting almost all the Bible
passages that clearly show that the Father is distinct from the Son and, more importantly for my position
then, greater than the Son. Jesus’ statement in John 14: 28b “… for the Father is greater than I” was my key
verse. But over time in my growth into maturity and through regular personal Bible study, God has given me
a confidence in the truth of the oneness of God and the perfect equality of the three Persons (Father, Son and
Holy Spirit) in the Godhead that is unshakeable. The class sessions and my readings on the Trinity served to
confirm my belief and strong conviction in the oneness of God and the perfect equality of the Father, the Son
and the Holy Spirit.
• My understanding of the purpose for which God created and sustains nature has further strengthened my
love for and careful use of the natural resources God has provided for our use. I have always been a lover of
animals and appreciate every TV documentary on wildlife. Although God is not identical in nature with His
creation but is transcendent from it, His deep involvement in and with His creation makes it incumbent on
all believers to have a more positive attitude to and less passive involvement with nature. I am motivated to
introduce the planting of trees as part of the programme at all future camps and conferences run by Scripture
Union and SLEFES in Sierra Leone.
Conclusion and some recommendations
My experience with this MA Course through the various class discussions and my readings has been very
beneficial for me personally. I have gained more insight into knowing why I believe what I believe and have been
motivated to use my knowledge and understanding to help others. The Scriptural support for the doctrines has
given me much ground for a good apologetics.
Some immediate application of the positive learning experience from this course will be in my contributions to
the Scripture Union Daily Bible Reading Guide. As one of the writers of the notes for Daily Guide my greater
understanding of these Christian doctrines will make my contributions richer. My work had also involved much
leadership training for Christian leaders in high schools and tertiary institutions as well as in Churches. I will be
including some introduction of Systematic Theology into my training schedule. I am very much involved in small
group Bible studies, in preparing study outlines and leading such groups. The motivation for doing theology
properly gained from Erickson’s theological task would be passed on to my group members and appropriately
addressed in future outlines.
I would wish to end this reflection with the following recommendations which are intended to guard against
‘causing a weaker brother to stumble in his faith’ while enrolled as a student in a theological institution.
1. That the level of Christian maturity and foundation in doctrinal truths of students should not be assumed or
taken for granted.
2. That lecturers in an evangelical theological institution be very sensitive in helping students approach
required readings of liberal theologians with the right attitude.
3. That some conscious effort is made to encourage students to be involved in a regular small group Bible study
session.
4. That a comprehensive list of Biblical references for each doctrine be made available to students in preparation
for class discussions
5. That, where appropriate, the different denominational positions (and their Scriptural support) on the basic
doctrines be discussed in class or given out as research work for small-group class presentations.

The Tony Wilmot Memorial Library
One of the most used facilities in NEGST is the
Tony Wilmot Memorial Library. On any given day,
you will not fail to find students studying in the
library. Named after the first principal of NEGST,
the library is the center of the students’ research
and studies.
The library’s vision is “to provide leadership
in developing a modern theological research
information center in Africa.”
Having moved from the famous former chicken
coops, with a handful of resources, the library
currently holds more than 42,000 resources. The
different kinds of resources in the library include
books, academic journals, databases on the
intranet, and online subscriptions to more than six
full text journal databases.
The Tony Wilmot Memorial Library currently
boasts of having moved from a manual catalogue
to a fully computerized catalogue that can be
accessed from all the computers on the intranet.
Soon the catalogue will be available on the
internet.
The library staff are looking towards developing a
Multimedia Centre which will be launched within
the coming year or the next. To manage this
development, the staff are undergoing training so
that they will be better equipped to handle these
changes in information handling.
A resource base for African research in the
Cross Cultural Research field is currently being
developed with the help of our world class faculty.
The theses and dissertations from students and
other published works in the library are based on
research and can help the church in Africa today
to do a better job in dealing with the African
realities of war, famine, poverty, disease, injustice,
trauma, poor governance, education and more.
Membership to the Tony Wilmot Memorial
Library is open to the members of the clergy,
Christian scholars and leaders, and other
Christians. The members will have full access to
the resources there that can help them be better
and excellent leaders for the African Church,
and beyond. For more information on the library
and how you can join, you can send enquiries to
librarian@negst.edu or you can go to our website
on: www.negst.edu. Better still, if you are in
Nairobi, you can come by the Campus and get to
know us better.

PREACHER’S DAY
Hearing my voice across the street
a lone idler raised his bleat,
“Brother it’s great stuff, just master the book
then learn to throw the hook”.
He grinned at me once
then beamed his face.
“A seminary degree mister,
is the cutting edge of a minister,
Brother, go sharpen the dull axe,
and save many souls a life blaze”.
he slung at me his only pound
but walked the narrow street bound.
At the fall I left for school
feeling uneasy like a fool.
Three years later
I waved my letter
to the very grayed
and loudly he brayed;
“Brother, have you mastered the book”?
amused I showed him my hook
expecting showers of praise.
“Bother, these flowers never preach”!
towel on my ring, he went home a winner.
I prayed “Lord save that sinner
the very crazy brother..
rid me also this bother
of having flowers and a collar
a street preacher without a dollar”.
I went home my sharp axe on hand
but his dull tree deep in heart.
