Measuring Tools in the Auto Shop
1. Micrometer- used to measure the outside diameter or thickness of an object in
thousandths of an inch or millimeters.
2. Vernier- used to measure outside diameter, inside diameter and/ or depth of a
hole.
3. Dial indicator with base- used to measure linear movement or centricity of an
object.
4. āVā blocks- used with a dial indicator to measure centricity of a shaft.
5. Torque wrenches- used to measure the rate of twisting force applied to a
fastener in foot pounds (ft. lbs), inch pounds or Newton meters.
