							Genre: A flyer

Audience: Incoming BU students

Purpose: To provide tips to new students how they can express themselves in college

What does your audience need/want to know? What might they believe is important about college
life? What might they find persuasive? Use this question to answer to select details you will share?

The audience of “Incoming BU students” will want to know information on college life and experiences.
They will find their dorm room, social life and classes important. I feel this audience will find a flyer
persuasive because it is something they can look at quickly and read without much time and effort put
forth on their part. For this genre I chose to do a flyer that was brief and to the point about their dorm
room. Students can now gain a sense of what and how to decorate and make their dorm theirs.

What Genre, or type of communication, might be best suited to your audience and purpose? Find at
least three examples of this genre.

A short brief flyer, for a few reasons; Students often do not want to read something like a brochure or
sit through a presentation. Students are now part of a society were technology makes everything
happen at a very fast pace and students move at that pace also. Students often do not want to “waste”
time reading something they probably forget. Also providing students with a long brochure or other
genres would be a waste of my time because more than likely I will find in the trash or unread under a
pile of books.

What characteristics of this genre will you imitate? What are the criteria for a “good” one?

A good flyer for college level students is something that is short, colorful and easy to read when looking
at it or when passing by it hanging in a hallway. Also a good flyer us big bold font that draws the eye. I
will imitate these characteristics. As seen on the following page I used bright colors and big bold font. I
also kept it short and to the point.

Examples of three other flyers follow.

Audience: Parents Purpose: To provide tips to parents of new students of how to help their students
decorate their dorm room

What does your audience need/want to know? What might they believe is important about college
life? What might they find persuasive? Use this question to answer to select details you will share?

The audience of “Parents” will want to know information on what their student is going to experience in
college. They will find any and all information about living at college and attending classes important. I
feel this audience will find a brochure persuasive because it is something they can read and get
important information in a timely fashion. Parents are busy but still want to know information about
where they are sending their student away. Therefore I felt a brochure would be beneficial because they
can get the important information without having to spend hours reading it or attending a presentation
that can take an hour or more. For this genre I chose to do a brochure that was brief but contained all
the major points I feel a parent would want to know about decorating their student’s dorm room.
Parents can now gain a sense of what and how to decorate and make their student dorm personal.

What Genre, or type of communication, might be best suited to your audience and purpose? Find at
least three examples of this genre.

A short brief informative brochure, for a few reasons; Parents often are busy but want to know the most
they can about their students. Parents want the important details in an organized easy to read fashion.
Finally providing a lecture or another type of genre for parents would not be to beneficial because
parents often work and their schedules may conflict when I would have the presentation or simply are
just too tired or have family issues to attend to.

Genre: A Letter to an employer

Audience: Future Employer

Purpose: To provide an employer of myself and how my experience at Bloomsburg University and how
it helped shape me and how it would help their school.

What does your audience need/want to know? What might they believe is important about college
life? What might they find persuasive? Use this question to answer to select details you will share?

The audience of “Future Employer” will want to know information about me and what I can bring to
benefit the school. They will find my skills learned in college and how I can use them to help the school
important. I feel this audience will find a letter persuasive because it is something they can look at read
and find out a little more about me in detail than my resume would. For this genre I chose to do a letter
that described my experience at Bloomsburg and how it will help me succeed in the work environment.
The future employer can now

What Genre, or type of communication, might be best suited to your audience and purpose? Find at

A brief letter, because employers are busy doing what they need to do to maintain the school. Also
providing employers with a letter provides them with a little more insight into who I am and how I can
use my skills I learned in college to benefit their school.

What characteristics of this genre will you imitate? What are the criteria for a “good” one?

A good letter for employers is brief but explanatory about you and your skills. Also it should be
something that supplements your resume and does not require much time on the employers behalf.

To Whom it may concern,

My name is Jessica Sidoti. I am a student at Bloomsburg University majoring in Early
Childhood Education. My experiences and learning at Bloomsburg are allowing me to grow into
a responsible adult.

I have created a balance between academics and my social life here at Bloomsburg
University. My first focus is on my academic work to enable me to fulfill my career aspirations. I
benefit greatly by being studious and in earning good grades to maintain my GPA. In addition to
academics, I participate in social events because of this I have created many friendships here at
Bloomsburg. Extracurricular activities and volunteering have also allowed me to meet many
people, learn responsibility as well as become as well rounded as I could hope to be.

I feel that responsibility is significant in life and building a career. I feel Bloomsburg has
given me that opportunity through academics, social events, extracurricular and having to live on
my own. I also learned responsibility through having to balance academics, extracurricular and
my social life. Throughout my college career I have made responsible decisions and practiced
being respectful and reliable to my classmates and professors.

My education and responsibility I learned at Bloomsburg University would benefit
Bloom Elementary School. I would make a professional and responsible employee. Thank you
for your time.

                                                                              Thank You,

                                                                              Jessica Sidoti
                                                                                     Jessica Sidoti
To whom it may concern,

I am a senior at Bloomsburg University and am considering applying for the job opening at your
facility. Along with being well qualified for the part, as listed in my resume, I believe there are other
qualities that I have learned from Bloomsburg University that I feel would help me in this position. At
Bloomsburg University, there are many diverse students, yet I feel that we all get along so well. So I
believe that I would be able to get along with all of my co-workers, and there would be no problems.
Here everyone typically gets along, it does not matter race or ethnicity. I believe that in order for a
facility to run smoothly, everyone needs to be friendly and get along.

A second reason why I feel that I’m qualified for this opening is because at Bloomsburg, there
are many clubs and activities that I participate in. So I’ll be active in many extra activities that I can
participate in at work because I am so used to being involved a lot at Bloomsburg. So I’ll be active in
many extra activities at work, and will not have a problem doing more than what is asked of me.

I feel that I am qualified for this spot in many ways, and that I would fit in very well at your
facility. I hope to hear back from you soon!
