THIRD SEMESTER
PAPER-1 : HISTORY AND THEORETICAL ASPECTS OF CLASSICAL
DANCE KATHAK
TIME : 3 Hrs Marks: 80

INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE PAPER - SETTER/ EXAMINER/CANDIDATES
The Paper- Setter will set a total of 7 questions, 3 from each of the two sections and
Ten short- answer type questions, which will cover the whole syllabus and will carry 20
marks. Each of the ten short- answer type of question will carry 2 marks and the
short - answer questions will be compulsory. There will be no choice in the compulsory
questions. The remaining six questions will carry 15 marks each and the candidate will
attempt two questions from each section. Thus the candidates will attempt five questions in
all including the compulsory question.
SECTION- I
1. Study of Lok Natya with special reference to Dance -Nautanki, Yakshagana, Chhau,
Raas Leela, Swang, Bhavai and Khayal.
2. Critical study of Nritta ,Nritya , Natya.
3. Study of Mandal and its different kinds.
4. Study of Karan, Anghar, Sthanak, Gatis & Vrities used in Dance.

5. Detailed study of Dashavtar.
6. Comparative Study of Dance Schools (Styles) Kuchipudi, Oddisi, Mohiniattam,
Satriya.
7. Relation of dance with social environment.
8. Origin and development of Thumri and its importance in Kathak.

and viarh Layakaries :
Teen Taal, Raas Taal and Shikhar Taal.
b) Writing of Layakaries 3/4, 6/5 , 7/8 , 5/3 and 5/7 in Teen Taal , Raas Taal ,
and Shikhar Taal.
c) Comparative Study of Tals with other Tals of Similar matras ---
Teen Taal, Raas Taal, Shikhar Taal , Sool Taal, Adhachoutaal, Ashta
Mangal and Lakhsmi Taal.
6. Notation in Following Taals :

PERFORMANCE

INSTRUCTION FOR THE PAPER-SETTER/ EXAMINER
1. The Practical examination will be conducted by a Board of Examiners, which will
consist of Head of the Department /his or her Nominee , Internal Teacher and
External Expert as per the decision of the Syndicate taken on 25.10.91 (Para 23).
2. There should not be a group of more than five students in a practical class.

Systematic performance of Kathak Dance in Teen Taal on Following Elements:
a) Uthan, Stuti , Technical Elements in Vilambit Laya, Madhya Laya, Drut
Laya and Gat Nikas.
b) Performance of Tarana composition or Sargam based composition.
SECTION -II
Demonstration of Gat Bhava- Holi
SECTION - III
Practical Demonstration of any one of the following through facial expression,
movements of body and gestures :
a) Ghazal, Thumri, Bhajan
SECTION -IV
Demonstration of Nava Rasas.

THIRD SEMESTER
PAPER- IV : CLASSICAL DANCE KATHAK : PRACTICAL - VIVA-VOCE
Duration : 45 Minutes Marks : 80
Internal Assessment : 20
INSTRUCTION FOR THE PAPER-SETTER/ EXAMINER
1. The Practical examination will be conducted by a Board of Examiners, which will
consist of Head of the Department /his or her Nominee , Internal Teacher and
External Expert as per the decision of the Syndicate taken on 25.10.91 (Para 23).
2. There should not be a group of more than five students in a practical class.

Practical demonstration and Padhant of the following technical elements in the
given Taals :
a) Teen Taal : One Uthan, One Thaat, One Tehai, One Amad, One Tora, One
Tukra, One Chakkaradar Tora, One Simple Paran, One
Chakkardar Paran, One Pharmaishi Paran, One Kavit,
One Parmelu, One Tiserjati Paran and four kinds of Paltas with
Tihai.
b) Raas Taal : One Uthan,One Amad, One Thaat, One Tihai, One Tora, One
Simple Paran, One Chakkardar Paran, One Kavit and One Ganesh
Paran.
c) Shikhar Taal : One Uthan, One Amad, One Thaat, One Tora, One Paran,
Chakkaradar Paran, One Simple Paran, One Kavit and
One Tipalli.
SECTION - II
a) Playing of Theka of Teen Taal and Jhaptaal on Tabla.
b) Ability to play Nagma on harmonium in Teen Taal and Raas Taal.
SECTION -III
a) Practical demonstration of Technical Elements only & the systematic Stage
performance of Kathak in Teen Taal.
b) Practical demonstration of Folk Dances of Rajasthan.

PAPER- IV : CLASSICAL DANCE KATHAK : PRACTICAL - VIVA-VOCE
