              ELECTROFISHING AND FISH REMOVAL WORKSHOP
Applied Electrofishing and Fish Removal Techniques - Effective Methods to Maximize Fish Survival
Rates (BIO-407) will be held July 25, 2002, 8:30 A.M. to 4 P.M. at the Mountaineers Conference Center, 300
Third Avenue West, Seattle, Washington. Electrofishing is an effective way to conduct fisheries studies and
relocate fish. However, electrofishing causes direct and indirect mortality to fish. Fish mortality can be reduced
by understanding the principles of electricity and hands on learning of proper field procedures. This class will
teach the principles and procedures of electrofishing and other non-electric techniques to catch fish.
Participants will spend one half day in the classroom and one half day in the field gaining knowledge and
experience with fish capture methods.

For more information on these courses, please contact Erick McWayne, Northwest Environmental Training
Center, at 206.762.1976 or at www.nwect.org.

                         AIR DISPERSION MODELING TRAINING
Fundamentals of Air Dipersion Modeling will be held August 15 & 16 in Seattle, Washington. This intensive
two-day course focuses on the scientific basis of dispersion modeling and provides a solid foundation for
conducting modeling studies or reviewing studies prepared by others.

Computer Modeling Laboratory will be held August 19 & 20 in Seattle, Washington. Working one per
computer, students use case studies to learn appropriate application of today’s most commonly used models
such as SCREEN3 and ISC3. Instructors focus on modeling parameters and the careful interpretation of
results. Alternative models are also introduced.

Introduction to AERMOD and ISC-PRIME will be held August 21 in Seattle, Washington. Receive hands-on
training with the AERMOD modeling system in this one-day course. Serves as a great third day option for the
Air Dispersion Modeling Computer Laboratory. An introduction to the ISC-PRIME model is also provided.

The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM International) Committee E47 on Biological Effects and
Environmental Fate will sponsor a 2½-day symposium on Landscape Ecology and Wildlife Habitat
Evaluation: Critical Information for Ecological Risk Assessment, Land-Use Management Activities, and
Biodiversity Enhancement Practices, April 7-9, 2003 in Kansas City, Missouri.

This symposium can be an important vehicle to open a dialogue among risk assessment and wildlife
management experts. Technical exchanges are encouraged to stimulate a critical analysis of contemporary
(1) knowledge of theoretical and applied ecology, especially embodied in landscape ecology and population
dynamics; (2) approaches to characterizing environmental risks to wildlife; and (3) requirements of
environmental managers addressing current situations and predicting consequences of actions.

Prospective authors/presenters must submit a title and 250-300 word abstract by 30 August 2002. Electronic
or paper submittals should be sent to: Larry Kapustka, ecological planning and toxicology, inc., 5010 SW Hout

                                NEBC NETWORKING PAYS OFF
EcoAnalysts, Inc., an Idaho corporation, has just been awarded a contract by Kennedy Jenks Consultants to
process benthic macroinvertebrate samples from the Lower Willamette River Superfund site. Formation of this
team is another example of how networking within the NEBC can result in significant contract benefits. “We
joined the NEBC almost four years ago,” says Gary Lester, CEO of EcoAnalysts, Inc. “Within six months of
joining the organization we received four contract awards from fellow NEBC members. The Lower Willamette
work gives us the opportunity to build a good working relationship with Kennedy Jenks, and it also gives us
experience working on a Superfund project. Without a doubt, joining the NEBC was a very beneficial move.”
