Back in 1994, I was hired to line produce a feature film crewed by recent graduates of a very
erything from shorts to popular
prestigious film school. They were all very accomplished when it came to knowing how to light
television series (Start Trek: Deep the scenes, where to put the camera, and what lens to use. What they lacked was the practical
Space Nine, Dallas, Falcon Crest) knowledge of what it takes to manage a film shoot day in and day out, from pre-production to
and feature films. post, and in the areas of distribution and marketing. Those areas of lack manifest themselves for
example when navigating the regulations around employing minors, putting together a 30-day
shooting schedule or negotiating a contract with an equipment rental company.
This reminded me of my own first experience on a film shoot. I was in training as an assistant
director, and I thought all my schooling had prepared me well for my first week of production,
but I quickly had to come up to speed on the myriad of rules concerning the employment of
union workers, and figuring out the rather complex purchase order and petty cash regulations.
Those experiences had a great influence on me when I began to develop my courses for SF
State Extended Learning’s Digital Video Intensive Program. I knew that my curriculum had to
be an equal mix between the artistic and the practical, between what is normally taught in film
school, and what you wind up learning in the real world.
Our students have goals of becoming successful producers, directors and screenwriters, and we
thoroughly encourage them, but those are long-term goals. For the majority of our students, their
first jobs won’t be as producers and directors, but we provide them with the practical knowledge
that will help them land their first jobs, make them valuable to their production team, and point
them in the right direction for those long-term goals.
