COURSE OBJECTIVE

Students will spend the year studying the world and its inhabitants with emphasis on culture,

economics, politics, geography, and history. Students will explore relationships between

physical and political features. The class will also examine political, social, and economic

relationships using a thematic approach.

EXPECTATIONS

See Class Expectations and Procedures Sheet

GRADE

Your grade for this class will consist of the following areas:

 Participation

 Tests/Quizzes

 Daily Assignments

 Projects

Students will be graded continuously on a points earned basis.

CURRENT EVENTS

Just about every day we will discuss events that are occurring in the news. Worthy news

items are big news items of the day usually found on the national news channels (Network

nightly news, CNN, Fox News, etc.). For example, news items about the economy,

presidential election, or war on terrorism are all worthy news items (these are thick event).

A news item about a car wreck on highway 2 is not worthy (this would be a thin event). Your

day will be determined later.

ADVICE

Helpful materials for students: computer flash drive (thumb drive; USB drive), writing

utensils, 3-ring binder, and paper.

I would like to offer some advice that will help students both transition and succeed at CHS.

 Planner—Daily use and a communication tool for parents.

 Late Work—Homework is due on the date assigned.

 Group Work—Choose partners wisely and each member be accountable.

 Organization—Strong recommendation of the use of a 3-ring binder.

 Communication—Don’t be afraid to talk with your teacher. We cannot read

students’ minds!

 Absences— It is important to understand that if you miss class for any reason that

you come to the teacher and ask for the missed work. Don’t expect your teacher to

remind you about the work you missed!

YOUR TEACHER

Hello Freshmen Bulldogs, I am Andy Groce. I earned both my undergraduate and Master’s

degrees from Seattle Pacific University, and this is my 10th year teaching at CHS. My family

consists of my lovely wife of 12 years, my 8 year old son Jonah, and my 6 year old daughter

Alayna. I love to play Wii and Xbox with my kids, watch movies, announce basketball

games, read about politics, visit with my friends, and do household projects. As an active

participant in sports, I like to wakeboard, ride motorcycles, water and downhill ski, play

basketball, and hunt. I am very excited to meet my students and their parents, and I want to

encourage all of you to keep a positive attitude and always try your hardest. Have a great

year!
