December 2008 Issue 4

Around the Grounds

It was back to yesteryear with Vets Dream Team of the

games played over 2 weeks. Week

Fortunately every game was played, 1. D.Thompson – Mount

so no side was at a significant Evelyn

disadvantage. Some good form too, 2. R.Ruffle – (Capt)

leading into Rep games . Warranwood

3. D.Howse – Wonga Park

Masters 1 4. C.Perrett – (V Capt) Wonga

Park

Sth Croydon won the toss and 5. R.Murphy – Bayswater

elected to bat on a gloomy day at Park

Nth Ringwood. Their start was not 6. S.Carter – Templeton

7. W.Dickson – Wonga Park

ideal, losing a wicket in the first over

8. R.McArthur – Sth Croydon

and another a few overs later. Both 9. K.Reyment – Nth Ringwood

Col (what colour will I do my hair this 10. S.McKie – Mount Evelyn

week) Reyment 2 for 24 and John 11. M.Robinson – Olinda

Ampt 0 for 11 were bowling a good 12. S.Moore – Warranwood

tight line. Sth Croydon then settled

to reach their respective 40’s. runs but still has no average as he is

yet to be dismissed.

After drinks, the Sth Croydon batsmen were moving the scoring along until a flurry of wickets caused the

scoring to dry up. Craig Doriean chipped in with wickets off consecutive balls and Kevin Reyment probed

away collecting 3 for 11 off some very tight bowling. Sth Croydon managed a respectable 7/155 on a slow

outfield where boundaries were hard to come by.

Nth Ringwood found runs hard to come by against a miserly Sth Croydon attack of Nick Hamer 0 for 13, and

The ‘Debutant’ Rod McArthur (3 for 19). Despite sensible batting, the dismissal of ‘Babe Ruth’ Rogers for 35

at the drinks break had the game on an even balance. But Sth Croydon threw the ball to Jim Dodge who

generated a bit of pace and, with some accurate bowling, finished with 2 for 18. Simon Dolphin remained

unbeaten on 31 and Nth Ringwood again just fell short at 7 for 137.

The Dales finally got a couple of last year’s premiership players back for the game against Wonga Park.

They got a solid start through the work of Scotty Boyce (40) and Jamie Kenyon (39) who were well supported

in the middle order by Gavin Hunt (36) and an unbeaten 29 not out from Craig Staggard. The Dales finished

7/185 which was not a bad effort considering the quality of the opposition and the slow outfield. Col Perrett

2/24, Johnny Schlueter 1/22 and Wes Britten 1/27 were the best of the Wonga bowlers.

FOR MATCH RESULTS, LADDERS, FIXTURES AND MORE NEWS

The Wonga boys started well through the efforts of Darren Howse (41). Then Col Perret smashed 44 after

both had drawn high numbered cards for the batting allocation. The Lilydale bowlers struggled to find the

right length, dropping five catches and Staggy straining a hamstring didn’t help their cause either. Wonga

home in the 31st over. Craig Staggard 1/15 and Pierre Schumann 1/22 both battled hard.

On a lush centre wicket at Quambee, Warranwood won the toss and sent Ainslie Park into bat. The

surrounds made scoring through the infield difficult, however Ainslie got off to a good start. Opening bowler

David Vaughan was bowling well and removed both openers. ‘Leaping’ Larry Turnley s provided some lusty

hitting to have Ainslie quite comfortably placed at 2/83. The Parkers middle order then imploded to be 6/93;

Jimmy Page was bowling well to take 3/21. With the help of several dropped catches Ainslie managed to claw

their way to 147 all out in the 35th over with Dave Delahunty scoring a game high 29 in difficult conditions.

The Ainslie bowlers started sensationally with Ian Cubitt picking up a wicket first ball and with ‘Jack’ O’Toole

bowling well the Sharks were in trouble at 3/16 after only 5 overs. Despite some rearguard action by Neal

Wood and Greg Sharp, the Warranwood innings never recovered and after 36 overs were 9/98. Pick of the

bowlers being Ian Cubitt 2/10 and Craig ‘where’s my deckchair’ Colverson 3/22.

In the other game, Sth Warrandyte defeated Croydon

Masters2 East Ringwood Brothers in arms

Wonga Park were entertained by the Damien & Gerard Wright (unfortunately Peter dwas not playing in

Taipans, and put into bat. How would this game), Sean & Damien O’Loughlin and Mick & Jim Mcdonald

Templeton go without the master himself,

Steve Teakel.? With tight bowling up to

the drinks break, Wonga were held to

4/58 But after drinks , Greg Ford [42] led

the charge ,assisted by Roger

Sharpe[37] and Warrick( the worlds

leading financial analyst) Dickson[40].

Wonga got to7/184 on a fairly slow

outfield. Scott Carter and Mal Calladine

each got two wickets.

The Taipans similarly struggled to drinks

to be 2/55, led by Scott Carter (42). The

middle order pushed the score along but

the scoring rate needed went into double

figures and the Taipans fell 13 runs

short. On the day, Warrick Dickson took

3/20 and contained the Taipans charge,

who you would have to say, missed their

Master Blaster.

Bayswater Park won the toss and batted against home team Boronia on a very hard pitch with a slow out

field. They lost their 1st wicket at 62, 2nd at 121, 3rd at 143 to finish on 3 for 179. Jim Cheshire batted well for

41 and Peter Ruddock made another 40. Best bowling for Boronia was Wayne Campbell with 2/21.

Boronia’s batting collapsed to be all out for 89 with Wayne Campbell top scoring with 20.Bayswater Park

bowling was tight and best served with Paul Dodd 2/8 and Darcy Gotch 2/12. Highlight of the match was the

wicket keeping of Greg Andrews with 2 stumpings and 2 catches.

At Griff Hunt Reserve, Ranges won the toss and batted first against the ‘old Aquinas mafia’ or simply ‘Easts’.

Due to the rain and a new wicket the ball was seaming around like on turf. East Ringwood took full advantage

of this and dismissed Ranges for 121. Michael Allender bowled a great spell taking 4/7 off 6 overs. Brett

Haines (23), Carl Duncan (21) and Steve Holland (25) were the main contributors with the bat.

Damien Wright and Mick McDonald got ER off to great start after the loss of an early wicket, both retiring on

42. Whilst Ranges were able to get some late wickets, Easts always had the game under control making

5/123 with 5 overs to spare. Big John Evans bowled a 15 ball over and Spanner’s catching ability was

questioned (by Carl Duncan of all people) were a couple of incidents that these guys would prefer to forget.

In the other match, Warranwood played Norwood

Division 3

The Mount Evelyn and Wonga Park game was played at the back oval at Lilydale .Interest was high as to

how many sixes would finish in the creek. The Hillsmen won the toss, batted, and by drinks they were already

98 with both Dean Thompson (40) and another Dunn (40) dominating. However, Mt Evelyn were held to

7/151 off there 36 over’s. This was due primarily to the Wonga bowlers claiming 7 wickets for only 50 runs in

the last 17 over's with Rohan Burke 2/12 off 6 (3 maidens), Colin McKinney 1/14 off 6 and Rick Thomas 2/20

off 5 the pick of the bowlers. Mt Evelyn were also restricted to two sixes

Wonga got off to a steady start .and at the drinks break were 3/60 and still in it Shane McKie was bowling full

and the boys thought he was tossing pies with sauce . Suddenly he had 4/23 and was unlucky not to have 5

for as the middle order disappeared with some good catching, well positioned field and enticing bowling. With

only Rick Thomas (35) showing any resistance and the one legged Gary Woods making a well compiled 41

By the final over's Wonga needed 26 runs with 3 wickets in hand and 4 over's. Then it was down to

14 runs with 1 wicket and 2 overs left. Mick Dunn (there was lots of them) then bowled Burke for 20 trying to

force the pace and Wonga were out for 140, 11 runs short in the 35th over.. In the final analysis there openers

Thompson and Mick Dunn set up there win as they scored quickly in the early over's and when fielding there

captain Geoff Dunn (another one) had there field well set

Olinda hosted its first Veterans Game at home against Bayswater Park on a ground, like many others this

round, had a slow outfield. Olinda batted first but The ‘Sharks Ross Henkel (2-8) and Michael Taylor (2-15)

were on a mission and had Olinda 6-43. Only ‘chopper ‘Giddens (27no) ‘provided any resistance to help

Olinda limp to 7-100.

Some excellent fielding by Kevin “Julius” Ide offered real incentive to the Olinda bowlers and Olinda was still

in it with Bayswater Park at 3/45. Unfortunately ‘’Banjo Stevens was battling his own bowling demons. In

what can only be described as a reincarnation of the famous John Howard bowling effort, Banjo tried to hit his

own toe with the cricket ball. Not satisfied with doing it once, he produced this pearler of a delivery again and

again.

For the Sharks Anthony Thomas (28) and Kerry Walton (24no) were the guiding lights and safely steered the

visitors home. Mark ‘Robbo’ Robertson was again the mainstay of the Olinda bowling attack picking up a fine

3/11 off his 6 overs

Legends

Warrandyte ventured to Nth Ringwood, and batted first. After a

careful start, Gary Patterson (2/19) struck twice in one over to

Chris Allan

remove both openers. Steve Pascoe batted solidly for a well

Chapman (16) batted well but was brilliantly caught by Andy Wright of the bowling of Bill Knowles. Some

would say Chapman was a bit unlucky because Andy’s hands have let him down on previous occasions.

Warrandyte finished at 8/138The Bulls took to the crease , but the ‘wily’ bowling of Steve Pascoe (2/14) saw

Warrandyte on top.. Max Summers (2/9) was bowling tightly and the Bulls were only crawling along. At tea

they were 3/44 and way off the pace. A great partnership by Dion Vander West (31) and Joe Marino (39) set

the Bulls back on track. Needing 7 an over with some lusty hitting by Bill Knowles (25) the Bulls moved closer

to the target. Things were pretty tense and even the scorer (Pato) cramped up with excitement. The Bulls

finished at 7/156 for a good win in a. great game by both sides ‘Ainslie won the toss and batted first against

Warranwood. Unfortunately for the ‘life savers’, only ‘Guitar Hero’ Andrew Stray (38) got going in a score of

8-132. Best of the Sharks bowlers was Steve Moore with 3/6 off 2 overs. Some say he should bowl more but

many other things have been said too, but, this is family newsletter. Rod Cordwell 2/22 from 6 overs was

particularly dangerous with his ‘mongrel toppies’’

Mark Heuston (McAdam Square Wine Bar) injured a muscle in

his right arm after bowling, but even partially crippled, managed to

hold a catch at mid off and then in a fit of jubilation threw the ball

into the air and screamed not with joy but in complete agony, as it

was his right arm he used to throw the ball. A near crippled

Brendon Kane managed the same feat twice later in the day.

Warranwood wrapped the game up early thanks to a typically

disciplined contribution from, Rob Ruffle, who managed to hit 40.

The rest pushed positive scores to see Warranwood get ahead in

the 32nd over. Ainslie’s version of Rod Cordwell, Gary Walles,

was the best of the bowlers with 2-17 off 6 unlucky overs.

The game between Croydon and Warrandyte South was

transferred from Croydon Oval to Silcock Reserve due to the

damp turf pitch. Croydon batted first but were in trouble when Mick Furness had 3 for 11 off 5 overs. Russell

Mc Neill (40) and David Heath (19) stabilized the innings and Barry Jacquier (28no) saw the innings close at

6/121.

When Warrandyte South innings commenced, Colin Garrett enjoyed the battle with old time team mate Barry

Jacquier until Barry finally trapped him lbw for 28. With Carl Schoonraad, Ed Garner and Chris Hartrup all

scoring in the high teens, Croydon were in trouble. Peter Whitworth had bowled 6 overs for 6 runs and Evion

Williams captured 3/10 .Bu t at 7/115 the skipper Ian Jones join Ken Morton (30no) to see Warrandyte

South claim a well earned victory.

Mount Evelyn had the onerous job of taking on Premiership favorites Bayswater Park, who to date had not

tasted victory. The Parkers batted first and they look to struggle to be 2/47 at drinks. After drinks, Rob Murphy

picked up the pace with a hard hitting 43, ably supported by big Colin McKenzie with 26. The sharks finished

on 7/160, with Alan Dobbin taking 2-16.

The Mount Evelyn innings began with the early loss of Mick Gavin, however a 2nd wicket partnership of 72

between Doug Watson and Kevin Dunn (35) saw them well placed for victory at 2/92 after 22 overs.

Tight bowling, aided by fielders holding all catches that came their way, saw the Hillsmen steadily lose wickets

to be 8/153 at the beginning of the 36th over. Unfortunately, they could only muster 2 runs from final over to

be 8/155 at the close. Best bowling honours were shared by Neil Clayton 2/20and Brian Trump 2/28

Player of the Round- Frank Costantino

It’s always useful to pack the helmet when playing Bayswater

Park, in case you have to face Frank ‘Cotso’ Costantino.

Frank has never liked batsmen, and we suspect age will have

little bearing on this philosophy.

Frank has become part of the furniture at Guy Turner

Reserve and is now in his 3rd year of playing Vets. He still

plays regularly with the Sharks ‘thirds’ on Saturday, where he

usually slings down about 15-20 overs of hand grenades a

game.

While most know ‘Cotso’ as a Bayswater Perk ‘stalwart’ he

actually played for 18 years with the now defunct Glen Park.

It was actually at Glen Park that he bounced and hit his club coach at the time, Rod Harrington, in the nets

one night. To this day, Rod is the only guy that Frank actually hurt with a bouncer.

Besides being an active member of the Sharks, Cotso is always forthcoming with an opinions and together

with Wonga’s Shaun Everett , is the most active speaker on the on the RDCA forum on its website .

Just remember that helmet when you play against him

Vets as role models?

In the perfect world the cradle to grave cycle for cricketers would be Milo, Friday non comp, Saturday morning

junior competition cricket, Saturday arvo senior cricket and Sunday vets. The reality is some people come in

and leave this model without completing the full cycle.

In particular as kids hit their late teens they get other interests. At times they are lost to cricket for 3or 4 years,

sometimes forever. Most of these kids themselves become parents later in life and if they themselves are

active it hopefully encourages their kids to be active.

An ideal environment for kids to develop thier social skills is the friendship and support that a cricket club can

provide while getting fit and learning new skills. If they see their dad having a go, it hopefully will inspire these

kids to continue or take up cricket.

This is where vets cricket is not just for the die hard cricketer who is working his way thru his cricketing

odyssey but for anyone wanting to have a go while having some laughs and fun times with their mates new

and old. From a cycle perspective it embodies what you want to teach the junior cricketers about doing your

best, never giving up and treating everyone with respect.

Look around as I have done and see the kids who come to the games having a hit in the nets, playing with

their mates, and then turning around and giving their dad or his mate a pat on the back when they have been

dismissed or come in from the field.

Always positive and encouraging. Priceless.

Some of these kids were not playing cricket initially but then come around of their own accord based on an

environment they see in vet’s cricket.

I know. I have seen it.

December Inter Association Matches

Our annual over 40’s and over 50’s matches against the Eastern Reporter Veterans will be played at

“Victoria Park”, High Street Kew (Melways Map 45 G5) on Sunday Dec 14th.

The selectors have faced a difficult task in assessing the many well performed nominees as well as

considering team balance. This year there will be many players chosen to represent the RDCA for their

first time.

Congratulations to all players selected and I know you will enjoy the honour and experience of

representing our association.

This year will be the 10th occasion that the over 40’s have played. RDCA had an early advantage in the

results but when the Box Hill Reporter merged with the Eastern association, the games became very

closely contested encounters. RDCA has won 3 of the past 5 matches---2 of these games have been

decided in the last over and one on the last ball of the game when a six was required!

So you can be assured of a closely fought match and our team will appreciate your support if you are able

to attend. The over 50’s have only played each other on three occasions and again they have been

closely contested events. Eastern/ Box Hill have a 2/1 advantage so our players will be trying to level that

score. The teams for these games are:
