Arrival

Before I started classes at UW Stout on September 2nd I went travelling through the
States for 3 weeks. After all the amazing places I have been to on my journey it was
nice to arrive at my new temporary home at Stout for the next four months.
After my journey I flew into Minneapolis and took the airport shuttle from
Minneapolis/St Paul Airport to the Motel 6 in Menomonie. From there Vicky Kuester
from the international office picked me up and welcomed me to Stout. She dropped
me off at North Hall which was my residence hall on campus. But Vicky did not leave
before she introduced me to the residence advisor at the front desk of North Hall who
was on duty that night. From then on Brittany the residence advisor took care of me.
She checked me in, handed me the keys over, and took me to my room. Since I did
not have anything that was necessary for the room such as a blanket, pillow, cutlery,
or dishes Brittany drove to Wal Mart with me and helped me doing the shopping. She
was a great help! Being back at the hall I could eventually set up my room.

Menomonie

Menomonie is a pretty little town with a population of 15,000. It is located at the
beautiful lake Menomin.
Bars and restaurants can be found in downtown. Thursdays is a common day to go
out as most students usually go home for the weekend. Therefore, bars can be very
busy on that day.
Moreover, Menomonie has to offer two movie theatres, Wal Mart, and several fast
food restaurants. They are quite far away from campus though. Consequently, the
most convenient way to get there is by car especially in winter when temperatures
                                     C).
can easily reach -10° Fahrenheit (-23° That does not necessarily mean that you
have to buy a car. There are always students who have cars and are more than
happy to give rides to Wal Mart.

UW Stout

UW Stout has a convenient campus because all buildings are relatively close to each
other and to the dorms which means classes are in walking distance.
As far as food is concerned UW Stout has a few places to go to. They are all located
on campus and quite near to the dorms. Their food is not too bad especially desserts
are delicious. One thing though I usually grabbed food as soon as it was served
because I wanted to get fresh, warm, and no soggy meals.
A big advantage UW Stout has is that every student is provided a laptop which can
be used for school and private things. That is very convenient for international
students as they don’t have to bring their own laptop so the carry-on luggage is not
too heavy.
Books that are relevant for classes can be lent at the library.

My Room

The rooms at North Hall are definitely no extravagant accommodations. I was aware
of the fact that the dorms were furnished quite sparely because before I left Germany
for the States I received some information from UW Stout about living in the dorms
on campus. Brochures told me what the rooms look like. Each room only provides a
bunk bed, a drawer, a closet, and a desk. So the first few weeks when I was living on
my own the room looked empty and uninviting as I did not have any other furniture or
decorations. Luckily after about four weeks I got a roommate and together with her a
lot of nice things moved in such as a futon, a TV, a coffee table, and a carpet. As a
result, Cassie’s (my awesome roommate!!!) and my room looked really nice and we
thusly had a great time!

Orientation week

Orientation week is very useful for international students. Not that I only learned
important things about the semester and the university itself I also met many other
international students who I am still in contact with.
As far as the basic information for the semester is concerned I learned where to lend
books, where to eat, where to go for picking up or dropping any courses, and a lot of
other important facts. Also all international students borrowed their books for the
semester during orientation so that we don’t have to pick them up in the first week of
school when everybody rushes to the library.

                                            5
Fall semester

My first couple of weeks at UW Stout were not very stressful since I got enrolled for
my courses for the fall semester when I was still back in Germany. Even when I
realized that I wanted to drop an accounting class and replace it by a different course
I did not encounter any difficulties in doing so not at least because of the helpful staff
at UW Stout.
As the semester was progressing I had to do a lot of homework. In addition to that
the weeks before thanksgiving were quite stressful as I had to write three term
papers. Apparently, the semester in America requires more work and effort. A big
advantage UW Stout has though is that everything can be done with the provided
laptop whether it is for doing research on a paper, for doing homework, or for using it
as a tool for taking notes in class.

Thanksgiving break

The Thanksgiving break is a good opportunity to go travelling or to get to know the
typical and traditional American Holiday. The one week break is nice to relax from the
stress of the semester I had so far. I was lucky to have a lovely roommate whose
family invited me to stay at their house over Thanksgiving. It was a great experience.
When Cassie, my roommate, and I headed to Minnesota, this is where Cassie lives, I
was really excited and nervous because I didn’t know what to expect at all. I have
heard a lot about Thanksgiving before but I had no clue how it would be for real.
Usually all students go home over thanksgiving so they get to be with their families.
The night before thanksgiving Cassie and I went to a house party in Cassie’s home
town which was a lot of fun. I also met many friends of her. It was a good time.
On thanksgiving morning Cassie’s family, including her grand parents, uncles, aunts,
cousins, and brothers and sisters showed up to have breakfast together. In the end,
33 people in total celebrated Thanksgiving at Cassie’s house. The whole family was
very friendly to me. It was a lot of fun. I got to enjoy a wide range of all the traditional

                                              6
food which was just delicious: Turkey, mashed potatoes, bean casserole, stuffing,
and all sorts of other side dishes, as well as the famous pumpkin pie.

Conclusion

All in all I had an awesome time at UW Stout. I learned a lot about America and its
culture not at least because of all the nice and helpful people I met.
Students as well as teachers at UW Stout are always happy to help and especially
the international office is always helpful. I felt comfortable from day one and I thusly
can recommend UW Stout to everyone who is considering to study in America.
