Instant messaging with MSN
You can send instant messages to other internet users with a variety of software. This
guide will deal with using ‘MSN Messenger’ to send the messages.
Opening MSN Messenger will give you a
window like this. The layout of the screen will
depend on the version that is installed on
your PC.
You will need to enter your login details on
this screen and then click the ‘Sign In’
button.
For MSN (or Windows) Messenger you will
need a Windows Live ID.

When you are signed in you will
see a screen similar to the screen
shown.
If you do a right mouse button click
on any of the names listed
in your ‘Online’ contacts list
you will see a list of tasks that
you can perform with that
contact.
To send the contact an instant
message select ‘Send an
instant message’ from the list.

You can use this
window to send the
message to your
contact.
Type in your
message and then
click on the send
button.
You will see the
entire conversation
listed in this window
as long as it
continues.

To send a file to
your contact select
the ‘Send file’
button and choose
‘Send a file or
photo…’ option.
Once you have
selected a file you will
see the file transfer
begin.

You may also want to
receive files from your
contact. After they
have selected a file for
you to receive you will
be asked to choose
what to do with the
request.
Make your choice by
selecting one of the
links.

When the file transfer
is completed you will
be able to open the file
using the link.

When you have finished your conversation
with your contact you can sign out using the
‘Sign Out’ command in the file menu.
