Millennium Volunteers
80 Goats for 80 Years!
Millennium Volunteers is a UK wide initiative aimed at providing
recognition to young people who are volunteering in their local
community. Participants are awarded a certificate following the
completion of 50, 100 and 200 hours volunteering. If participants
complete 200 hours they receive a nationally recognised Award of

Sheep shearing in action!
Members of the YFCU displayed the shear talent that exists within
the association at the YFCU annual sheep shearing competition
that took place at the Balmoral Show.
The competition, which is held in association with Lister Shearing
Equipment Limited, had a novice contest for members as well as
the advanced competition for the YFCU sheep shearing title.
In the novice competition 10 competitors sheared sheep in front of
a packed Sale Ring. In the end judges named James Gilpin from
Moneyrea YFC as the YFCU Sheep Shearing Novice Winner for 2009
and he received a glass trophy from David John, Lister Shearing
and a commemorative medal from Eric Wilson of the Worshipful
Company of Woolmen for his achievement.
Then it was the turn of the experienced shearers to show their
craft at its best in the YFCU Advanced Sheep Shearing Competition.
Five competitors sweated it out in a tough contest. In the end
Trevor Clarke from City of Derry YFC clinched top place and the
coveted Lister Silver Hand piece. Dennis Taylor came second and
John Harbinson was placed third.
The judges were impressed with the skill and craftsmanship
displayed by each of the young farmers’ members.
YFCU, in association with Tesco, held a cook off for members at the
Balmoral Show. In teams of two, competitors showed their
cooking skills, or lack of, at the Tesco stand when they were given
a bag of groceries and a 20 minute time limit to prepare and serve
a main course and a crepe for dessert.
Ingredients supplied by Tesco included pasta, noodles, stir fry

they cheered on their teams. Two members from clubs in each of
the six counties, selected from county heats, made up the teams

crowds of supporters descended on the lawn to

The build up to the Tug of War began at the YFCU

decide which teams pulled against one another in
round one. Thirteen teams entered the competition
and the draw split the teams into two groups with
the top two teams from each making it through to
the semi-final stages.
The spectators cheered on each club and rewarded
each pull with rapturous applause.
At the semi-final stage each team was exhausted
but their enthusiasm and desire to win drove them
on. In a tight contest Kilwaughter YFC and Seaforde YFC were to face each other in the final. Spa YFC and Moycraig A YFC took
part in a third place pull and Spa took the 3rd spot.
As the two teams took the strain in the final, the noise from the crowd was overwhelming. Kilwaughter YFC had the strength to
win the contest and pick up the much coveted John Thompson & Sons Ltd Perpetual Shield.
The YFCU would like to thank everyone who helped with the Tug of War, including Barrie Barr for all his help and all those who
helped to steward the event. Special thanks must also be paid to John Thompson & Sons Ltd for their support and financial

Representatives from young farmers’ clubs throughout
Northern Ireland recently attended an 80th anniversary
evening at Hillsborough Castle.
Young Farmers Attend
Guest speaker Joe Patton (Past President of YFCU) addressing
guests at the 80th anniversary evening held recently at Hillsborough
Castle.
80th Anniversary
Evening
The magnificent surroundings of the castle added a certain sense
of grandeur to the evening which was held to celebrate all that is
good about the association over the past eighty years.
Guest speaker Charlotte Collins (Garvagh YFC) addressing guests at
the 80th anniversary evening held recently at Hillsborough Castle.
Following a drinks reception, members had time to explore the
castle before listening to guest speaker, Joe Patton, recount his
time as a member of YFCU. Mr Patton joined Kilraughts YFC in
1953 and served as President of the association from 1969 to
1971. His speech gave members an insight into the past and how
the activities and events he enjoyed then are still being enjoyed
by members today.
Next to speak was one of the association’s younger members,
Charlotte Collins from Garvagh YFC. Charlotte joined her local club
last September and since then she has already made her mark by
taking part in various competitions and events and winning her
age group in the prestigious Public Speaking competition.
Charlotte’s speech was both witty and inspirational and showed
why becoming a member of young farmers is as important today as
it was in Mr Patton’s time. YFCU President, Thoburn McCaughey,
Newly elected YFCU Rural Youth Europe board member Barbara
also took to the stage and explained to members how the role of

the association continues to be relevant in today’s world and it
is hoped that the YFCU will continue to grow over the next
eighty years.
Following the speeches each club represented on the evening
received a certificate of recognition for the contribution of their
club to the work of the association. The two honourary life
members, Pam Robinson and Stephen Dowie, were acknowledged
for all their help and support over the years. With the
presentation concluded, members and guests enjoyed the rest of
the reception in the grand surroundings.
YFCU would like to take this opportunity to thank Joe Patton and
Charlotte Collins for their contribution to the evening, the ladies
who are past members or mums of current members who provided
the lovely food, Hillsborough Castle for their help in arranging and
accommodating the event, the Duke of Abercorn who is patron of
YFCU for taking time out of his busy schedule to sign all the
certificates and to all the members and staff who attended on the
evening.

Killinchy members got up to over the summer
months. The holiday season began with the Co Down
annual Rally Day on 4th July. The theme was
Independence Day and Killinchy was assigned the
State of Texas. Members had a brilliant day taking
part in the challenges and side show. Everyone of
course got soaked at the end with the Its a Knockout
challenge. Killinchy’s preparation and hard work
paid off as they picked up many certificates
including Best Side Show.
Randalstown started off this year with their annual church
service and collected a fantastic total of £400 for Marie Curie
Cancer Care. Randalstown YFC have also taken part in many of
the activities that the YFCU has thrown at us, including craft
and art, home management, tractor handling and many more.
Congratulations for club members Sarah Thompson, who gained
1st place in the YFCU art competition, Pearson Johnston for
gaining 3rd place in the craft section, and congratulations to
Samuel Hill and Harry Thompson who gained second place at
the Tractor Handling competition at the Ballymena show, and
to club members Caroline Thompson and Gemma Weir for
gaining 3rd place in the jeep challenge also at the Ballymena

With the 50th Anniversary and an exciting winter programme
in place, what better time could there be to become part of it
all. You don’t have to be a farmer, just between the age of 12
and 25 years old. Aiming to make 2009-2010 the best year
yet, Randalstown YFC are preparing for everything that is
going to come their way.

crowd entertained, including ladies safe driving, tractor driving,
slippery football and Its a Knockout. Congratulations to Lynn
Boyce for winning the ladies safe driving competition.
We held a charity car wash and bake sale on Sat 25th July in aid
of Cash for Kids. The weather was ideal and members worked
hard to wash as many cars and sell as many buns as they could.
The total amount raised on the day from the car wash and bake
sale was a very impressive 700. Well done to everyone involved.
Junior members attended the YF Junior Conference on 15th

better job and made it to the final but lost out on the shield.
Overall it was a great success for the club.
Artana YFC is celebrating its 50th Anniversary this year and will
be having a fun packed year of meetings. This year’s programme
is in the same style as the first one used 50 years ago so club
members can look forward to good old fashioned fun with a few
modern twists.
Old club members have been very helpful with lots of stories &
pictures of the history of the club and Artana YFC is definitely
still nifty at 50.
