History
• BA Programs established in Dance
and Theatre in 1993.
• Programs have grown continually
– Dance: from 6 to 70 majors
(more than 11 times the original size).
– Theatre: from 20 to 130 majors
(more than 6 times the original size).
• Programs also serve nearly 1,000
non-majors and general education
students each year.
Success of Current Programs
• Have attracted higher and
higher quality students
each year.
• Students have earned
honors at many national
competitive juried
conferences.
• Senior showcase in NYC
this spring.
Rationale for Creating New BFA
Programs in Dance and Theatre
• Interest in the programs is strong.
• The BFA would better meet the needs of students
seeking professional education.
• Removing professional track students from the BA
track would enable that program to better meet the
needs of students seeking a liberal arts education.
Program Differences
• The BFA requires a higher level of artistry.
• The BA should have more of a liberal arts focus.
• The current program tries to meet the needs of both
groups of students and, as such, does not fully meet
the needs of either.
Summary
The B.F.A. programs in Dance and Theatre
• have received approval from the CAS Assembly and
the University Senate.
• can be implemented upon approval.
• support the 2010 goal of offering a high-quality and
challenging education for undergraduate students.
• support the College of Arts and Sciences and the
University’s vision of emphasizing the visual and
performing arts.
