 “Jocks”( not smart )

 Handicaps

 Students need to know what bullying is…

 Consistency of consequences = reduction

 Inconsistency of consequences = makes it ok

Different Kinds of Bullying

 Verbal Bullying

 Physical Bullying

 Relational Bullying

Short Term Effects of Bullying

 Children victimized later in life are more likely to turn to drinking and

violence as a way of coping with the bullying

 Being a victim is very stressful and has many effects on a child life.

 The bullied can be so depressed they actually become ill

 Self esteem can be really low

Long Term Effects of

bullying

 Bullying can have long-lasting effects, but

particularly when it begins in adolescence.

 The long term consequences of being a victim

vary a good deal

Statistics

80% of adolescents reported being bullied during their

school years

 90% of 4th through 8th graders report being victims

 15% of students bully regularly or are victims of bullies

 Bullies identified by age eight are six times more likely

to be convicted of a crime by age twenty-four.

 Students reported that 71% of the teachers or other

adults in the classroom ignored bullying incidents.

Stats Cont.

 When asked students uniformly expressed the desire that

teachers intervene rather than ignore teasing and bullying.

 Aggressive behavior is learned early and becomes resistant to

change if it persists beyond age eight.

 Bullying most often occurs at school where there is minimal or no

supervision (e.g., playground, hallways, cafeteria).

 Most bullying is verbal.

 Bullying begins in elementary school, peaks in middle school,

diminishes but does not disappear in high school.

 Both boys and girls bully, usually same sex classmates, with

female bullying taking indirect, manipulative forms.

Tips to prevent/stop bullying for

victims

 On the bus

Sit near the front of the bus (sitting near the driver will make the

bully think twice about picking on you)

Sit with friends (a bully will most likely not single you out if you are

with friends)

 In the cafeteria

Sit close to a teacher or adult watching the café

Tell a teacher that you are getting picked on and ask them to keep

an eye on you and the bully

Move your seat away from the bully (have a friend go with you)

 In the hall

If you know a bully is going to be in a certain place, try to avoid

walking by that way, even if it means taking the longer way to class

Walk with friends

If you see the bully ahead, stop in a classroom and wait until the

bully goes to his class

Teachers

 What teachers can do about bullying

 Have a meeting with the student doing the bullying to talk with

them about why it is they are picking on other students (how

did it make you feel to pick on someone? Do you think they felt

good? Are you going to keep doing it? If it happens again I am

going to call home and tell your parents)
