Dear Friends,

I saw LIAR LIAR yesterday and Jason Bernard was wonderful. Perhaps

his role on Starman had more in showing his talent and charm, but

it was so good to see him and see him used so well in LIAR LIAR. the

latter movie is very strong on FATHER & SON

material... best ghw

George at the library here. One of my customers (patrons), Paul Bolger,

an

actor, just told me his brother John (who has been on Another World and

NYPD Blue) is going to star in May at the Old Globe Theater in San Diego,

in a drama called The real Thing.

I told Paul about the Robert Hays and Patrick Culliton connection

that theater has.

I should have added to the message below that LIAR LIAR

has some naughty sections, with risque' activities...

Count me among the comet viewers, at long last!!

It's impossible to see the comet from where I live, there are just too

many tall buildings and city lights. However, tonight, when some

out-of-town friends were visiting, we drove out of the downtown core

and went to the Forever Knight studio because they wanted to see it.

And although there are certainly street lights around, there are also

vast expanses of fields and open spaces nearby. And as we drove into

the parking lot, there smack dab in front of us was the comet! We

could even see the tail with our naked eyes! It was a great view,

there were no other stars nearby. Unfortunately it was also a totally

unexpected view, so none of us had our binoculars with us, but I may

go back there tomorrow night if it's clear.

It really was an amazing sight!!

Yep, Candi Farmer (editor of The Robert Hays Connection Magazine,

publication

of The Robert Hays International Fan Club, for those of you new to us --

for

membership information, write Ken McDaniel, 4016 Fountainhead Lane,

Dallas TX

75233) saw it and told me about it. I have been busy with sculpture and

jewelry (just getting started with that! What fun!) and *watching* TV

only

at times, and then mostly *listening*, so I haven't seen his commercial.

Candi said he got good coverage in it. When was it on? She doesn't

remember exactly. Was it a commercial that will run again, or an

Entertainment Tonight type coverage?

Jeanette Kalisch called last night and said she'd seen a promo on ACCESS

HOLLYWOOD for a story that will air on Wednesday's show. It's of David

Carradine getting his star on the Walk of Fame. JK says she wasn't

sitting

watching the TV and by the time she got over to it, there was only time

for a

tiny glimpse, but she thinks she MAY have seen Patrick Culliton among

those

gathered. Makes sense, since Patrick and "Dave" have been close friends

forever. (Patrick even named a dog for his good buddy and, if I remember

correctly, "Dave" returned the favor.)

In response to Linda's post about a Robert Hays PSA (Public Service

Announcement), I hadn't heard about that one, nor have I seen it, but

readers

of BLUE LIGHTS will find the info (in the Liaison Reports) that Bob

recently

did four PSAs concerning Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. Have no idea how soon

those

will air and in what areas.

Just haven't had time to post our usual BL Digest yet. It's tax time for

those who put it off till the last minute! Who me?! ;-) More later!

Subject: 2sn0406 Two weeks

I was away from Virginia Beach for the week before Easter, and when I

returned last Monday there were 37 email messages waiting for me. So,

in my spare time, I've been wading through them, and now (after

Prodigy's Announcements, Messages from Council Members, Family, and

New Contacts for SSI) I come to the category of STARMANET.

First, a request for information. I've been taping MYSTERY SCIENCE

THEATER for someone else, and I managed to goof up last Saturday

(March 29) and miss it. Was it a rerun, I hope, of the LEECH WOMAN

film? The previous week was a rerun of REVENGE OF THE CREATURE, and

I found a newspaper listing that said "Leech" for the 29th. This

week (yesterday, April 5) was a new film although that same newspaper

called it "Creature" - this was THE SHE-CREATURE instead of REVENGE

OF THE CREATURE. (Titles are getting very similar now that they're

on Sci-Fi Channel and are limited to S.F. films.) Anyway, if someone

can confirm whether the 29th was a rerun, then I can hopefully be at

ease in my mind and at least be sure whether THE SHE-CREATURE was the

eighth or the ninth episode for the season and whether I need to make

up for the missing episode next time it comes around.

Sharon - sounds like your Sci-Fi convention in Edmonton was fun - but

strenuous! I'm not sure these old bones would be up to the challenge.

However, your description of only 10 hours' sleep all weekend and

NOTHING nutritious certainly sounds familiar. (Since I KNOW I won't

be getting enough sleep at a con or gathering, I DO try to eat real

food once or twice a day...)

As to your new STARMAN friends - you know, it IS still possible to

communicate by snail mail... Even if they can't join us on the

STARMANET list, they could catch up with the doings in print.

I like your signature quote from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Sharon. I

never saw the movie of Buffy (though Buffy's mom was played by our

own Candy Clark - Shannon McGovern in the STARMAN episode "Like

Father, Like Son"), and so far all I've seen was one (last week's)

episode of the series. At that, I was interrupted a few times and

don't think I heard every line they said. But it looks / sounds very

promising, and I'll have to visit there again.

I received my BLUE LIGHTS #59/60 on Thursday, I think it was. Lotsa

good stuff in it (even the stuff I didn't write or provide!) Hey, I

guess I'd better get busy and register as a voter...

Thanks, George, for reporting that Jason Bernard (police chief Harold

Galley in STARMAN "Peregrine") is in LIAR LIAR. It would be

impossible to keep track of the appearances / credits of StarStaffers

(for the Guest Star News and Sightings columns in BLUE LIGHTS, and

for the CREDITS WHERE CREDITS ARE DUE supplement - there WILL be a

supplement, one of these years!) without the willing assistance of a

dozen or more Spotlighters! Sad that there won't be any more Jason

Bernard portrayals to look forward to...

Well, I guess I've run out of things to say for the moment. "I'm

sure there will be more!" CYL - jl.

Hi everyone,

I just thought that I'd let you all know that I'm going to be going on

a big trip to Alaska and Canada in June/July 1999.

A few friends of mine have decided that my trip looked like so much

fun that they'll be doing it with me. Because of the distances

involved with traveling from Australia and the cost to go anywhere

(airfares from Brisbane to LA can cost as much as $2,000 return -

economy/tourist) you need to plan well in advance because it's always

a good idea doing as much as you can each trip. We will be doing a

SeaTrek cruise of Alaska (that's a cruise with Star Trek guests) and

then we'll be doing some traveling around Canada. At this time we'll

be doing a tour of the west "coast" (Vancouver to Jasper to Calgary

etc.) and my preference is to use the canrailpass (travel by train) to

the east "coast" and then doing a tour there (Toronto, Quebec and

Montreal etc.).

Lynne Ackerman has very kindly agreed to show us around Toronto (my

friends are big Forever Knight fans). My friends are also very big

Highlander fans and are really looking forward to looking around

Vancouver.

My trip also includes the ubiquitous Los Angeles, then going to

Portland OR to stay with Sue Skarin then meeting up with my friends

and doing the cruise, and after Toronto I'll be heading for Linda

Ratoff's place in Nashua NH. I am looking forward to having a

wonderful time and meeting any starman fans that want to meet up with

me.

I'm enjoying it, which surprised me. The dialogue is snappy...and then

there's Anthony Stewart Head. Sigh...

Nothing much new up here...I'm trying to catalogue my videotapes (and

Gayle, thank you so very much for posting the information. There are

quite a few shows there that look interesting!

I noticed a couple of British series (incl the Robert Pastorelli show)

and one

Australian series being remade. - see below. Thanks again Gayle.

I am glad someone on Starmanet is finally talking about Heaven's Gate.

Is anybody concerned that our group is too similar to that "cult?"

After all our group is a refuge from the colder or harder mundane world,

where nice people, or people who try to be nice, can escape

the cotton-picking mundane society for awhile.

Jill and I have pictures of ALIENS on our walls, but they

look like Hays and Barnes (there's also the 3rd Rock crew, the cyborg

policewoman from Mann and Machine, and Billy Zane as the Phantom).

best, ghw

Hm, it may be premature, but I'd like to go on record to say that I

think

a mass suicide by our group would be very unwise. It would have many

disadvantages. It would make it very difficult to campaign for the return

of

STARMAN; if a letter-writing campaign was needed at a certain point, for

example, it would be impossible for us to carry it out. Besides, dead

people are not considered a desirable demographic group by advertisers,

since, according to studies, they spend less money than any other segment

of

the population. And look how hard it would be to organize cons if we

were

dead. Besides the fact that it would make the actual organizing more

difficult, it would severely limit our choice of hotels, because many

hotels

discriminate against dead patrons, and refuse to let them stay. (And

such

discrimination is legal.) Airlines also have been known to refuse to

carry

dead passengers, so it would be hard for us to fly to cons. Although we

might try to get tickets on a comet-chasing spaceship instead, their

service

is irregular and infrequent.

Despite a few advantages -- dead people are known to have much lower

phone

bills, for example -- I think that the disadvantages of mass suicide are

considerable and I for one would vote against it.

I know that this is highly off-topic, but I just wanted to share with

I've always struggled with my weight and recently had some health

problems and I gained back a lot of weight that I had worked so hard to

lose. Sue has been there for me. She has been encouraging and

supportive and has been working with me as my e-mail personal trainer

and I'm starting to lose that weight again and I'm regaining my fitness

too. I just wanted her to realize just how important her help has been.

I know that Sue is a very busy person, and I appreciate her taking the

George Wells was wondering if the Starman group is a bit too

much like Heaven's Gate. Well, I don't think so. After all, our

aliens were planning to stay here (if they can convince the

authorities to let them live unmolested). Also, if Starman does go

away, he's not planning to take any group of people with him, just

maybe Scott if he has enough power to convert himself to travel

form and reincarnate elsewhere. And we don't know yet if Scott

could do that. And then there's that other detail; we aren't a

group of web page designers.

In summation, I don't think we are in any danger of mass suicide,

even if a renewed series or TV movie doesn't appear. But let's

concentrate on making the energy vibes right for Starman to

reappear. Starman is about living life kindly and helping others,

not about death and escapism.

Remember what J.R.R. Tolkien said about Escape. It's OK to want

out if you are in a prison. But the only prisons we are in are

walls around our imaginations.

Gayle, Jean (and always, George) -- thanks for a good laugh! The only

advantage to flying as a dead person is that you get to lie down in a

nice,

cushioned box the whole time instead of having cramped legs and elbows,

from Vicki Werkley:

================

[Sorry for any repetitions, but there are new people being added to the

list

all the time and others who need reminders.]

Greetings!

In a sister post "SSI/SMOW News Update" you'll find some details about

what's

new with PROJECT BLUE LIGHT (PBL)--SSI-led efforts to create a STARMAN

Movie

Of the Week (SMOW).

Spotlighter support for PBL has been tremendous, and you all seem to

understand why most details about the story/script must be kept under

wraps

to protect the property legally. We understand this is frustrating for

you,

especially those of you who would like to help.

At this stage, the help we need most is financial... to support the

telephone/printing/shipping costs of involving group process. Having a

small

Committee results in more great ideas/input than one person working

alone,

but also results in more expenses for those people to communicate.

We also understand many of you can't help financially, and that's fine

too.

"What You Can, When You Can" is SSI's motto. And BELIEVING in the project

is

just as important as participating or helping fund it!

Now here's a way you can help with fund-raising without cost to you!

I'm about to create some new "refrigerator" magnets to help raise funds

for

PBL/SMOW.

Your ideas (including quotes from the series) are welcome! We want these

to

focus on STARMAN rather than SSI and have the widest appeal.

What quotes are you tired of?

What would seem new and fresh?

Are there some you never get tired of?

Depending on response, we may put some up to a vote.

Please send your suggestions/comments to me at Starwerks@aol.com

It'd also be good to know how many of you would purchase such magnets

(blue

and white; business-card size [2 inches X 3.5 inches]; projected cost $1

each

plus postage) and how many you think you'd buy.

I plan to do at least two different ones, but might consider a third if

people would want to buy that many (each new saying is an additional

outlay

cost).

So I'd appreciate hearing whether:

a) you're not interested in buying any (your ideas still welcome!)

b) you'd probably buy one, two, three different sayings.

c) Maybe you'd buy more than one of a saying?

I need to know all this as soon as possible, because the order will be

going

in soon!

Thanks!

Greetings, All!

Apologies to those of you I owe email. And apologies, too, from Todd and

myself for not yet posting the BL News/Voter Registration materals.

Because

of these delays (and because BL itself was delayed), the Council voted to

extend the deadlines in the current voter registration drive. (US

Residents'

voter registration forms must now be postmarked by June 1. Those from

Extra-Statesiders [residing outside the US] should be postmarked by May

15 in

order to arrive at the same time as US forms. If you have not received

BLUE

LIGHTS #59/60 and are not a subscriber to the new SSI-INFO list (where

all

the necessary info will be posted _soon_) but you want to be an eligible

voter, you may subscribe to the list by sending an email to:

ssi-info-request@gerthd.ger.sas.com

The subject line will be ignored. Put the word JOIN in the message field.

That's all you have to do.

[BTW, if you are a BL subscriber and haven't received your issue, you

_should_ have. Contact Subscriptions Mgr. Lil Sibley at

NovaBlue@aol.com)]

If you have questions, please feel free to contact me--or another Council

membe--privately (so we don't clog up this list). [Though you may

certainly

contact any Council member (info at end of post) Todd Andrews and I are

the

only ones who have all the information conveniently at hand.] Send your

post

to Starwerks@aol.com to write me or to t.andrews1@genie.com to reach

Todd.

[Other Council Members' Addresses/Eddresses may be found on page 10 of

BL#59/60. This info will also be posted on SSI-INFO on April 22, so if

you've

subscribed by then, you'll have it electronically.]

The main reason I've been tardy responding to messages, etc. is that my

main

concentration has been on creating a Final First Draft for SMOW (a

STARMAN TV

Movie) so it can go "shopping" in Hollywood. Since finishing BL, I have

worked my way through another draft, incorporating suggestions on SMOWRS1

(SMOW Reading Script First Draft) from members of the Readers Committee.

This

revision was called SMOWRS1.1A. Now, I'm going through yet another time,

doing the same. This project has been amazing... the story/characters

just

keep expanding/deepening--which is quite a challenge since we're

concurrently

trying to SHORTEN the script!

Here's a bit of news (which incorporates and goes beyond info included on

page 5 of BL#59/60):

JOHN SLOSSER was an Assistant Director (AD) on STARMAN, then QUANTUM LEAP

and

most recently, DARK SKIES. He's worked as an AD and/or Unit Production

Mgr

(UPM) on numerous other series/movies (including REMINGTON STEELE and

MIDNIGHT CALLER). Currently, he's UPM for a CBS pilot in development

(GHOST

OF A CHANCE created by Paul Haggis, who created DUE SOUTH). He has

attended

two FAMILY-CON conventions. He recently became part of the SMOW Readers

Committee [he _asked_ if he could read the script!]. On page 5 in BL,

he's

quoted saying (after reading only the first part of SMOWRS1): "I wish

with

all my practical production experience that I had the nerve to even try

to

write a script, much less do as good a job as you have done with this

effort."

As an update: Here (in its entirety) is his 4/11/97 message titled

"SMOW":

"LOVED IT!! I finished it [in] two sittings last night. It is very

good,

Vicki. Especially for a first draft. I'm at work right now, I'll send

more

detailed comments later. JOHN"

And thanks to all the hard work/excellent ideas of the Spotlighters on

the

Committee, SMOWRS1.1A came out EVEN BETTER and is improving still more

with

the current revisions (SMOWRS1.1B)!

What can you do to help? Mainly at this point, we need financial help to

support the telephone/printing/shipping costs of involving group process.

Having a small Committee results in more great ideas/input than one

person

working alone, but also results in more expenses for those people to

communicate.

I'm about to create some new refrigerator magnets to help raise funds for

these costs, and your ideas for quotes are welcomed. See "Ideas Welcome!"

post.

Meanwhile, I need to get back to the challenge of making SMOWRS1.1B at

least

five pages shorter than SMOWRS1.1A, while incorporating several great new

ideas. Piece of cake!

Now I have to go do what Capt. Picard always commands:

"MISMOW!" ("Make it SMOW!")

Dear Friends,

Thanks, Jean, for the write-up. I hadn't said anything about the

Hale_Bopp cult, but since the subject finally came up i

figured I would express myself. Which I didn't do well.

A couple thoughts: Most of you know I "hate" suicide in some of

the movies and tv shows I have mentioned---and even felt "betrayed" by

a favorite series that featured the subject strongly in its last episode.

Before a lot of the details (castration, etc) came out, though,

the cult members were described as

very nice gentle interested people. Then some newscasters promoted

the latest by saying things SUCH as (similar to) "these people were

WEIRD...they BELIEVED science-fiction!!!!...they had pictures of aliens

on

their walls so you KNOW they weren't normal....."

I turned to someone at the time and said "I'm against suicides but why

can't reporters like that and lawyers like the one I met last week---why

can't THEY commit mass suicide [if anybody does].? ..we could use more

gentle groups of people who are happy.

So i wish i could be as happy as some of the members of that cult

seemed to be, but actually I also wonder if a person or group can be

that

happy (what was reported) and survive in our world/society.

Other thoughts on all this in my brain have shifted due to transport

and are currently not close enough to the top (or even the pineal gland)

to be available at this time. Further reports from my subconscious may

appear later.

After my appearance on Oprah, they established a file at her AOL website

for

people who want to exchange messages about the "Would You Survive?"

program.

This is wonderful opportunity to connect with others who share our

interest.

Let others know who you are and how you relate to the "survivor

personality."

Here is what to do:

1) Access America On-Line

2) Keyword: Oprah

3) Select "O", Oprah's Community

4) Select "Star of the Week"

5) Select "The Star Board"

6) Select the "Dr. Al Siebert" file

7) Read the messages and add yours

Does anyone have the instructions for joining/being on/quitting

the Starmanet list? I need to see current version.

Thanks for any help.

Hi All!

Yesterday I posted three messages to STARMANET:

1) FWD of Al Siebert's Oprah post

2) SSI/SMOW News Update

3) URGENT! Ideas Welcome!

I received copies of the first two but not the third. However, some of

you

have received it, since you're responding. [Thank you, to those of you

who

HAVE taken time to write.]

I wonder if anyone else didn't receive "URGENT! Ideas Welcome!"? [About

what

quotes to use for new STARMAN refrigerator magnets.] If you didn't,

please

let me know (privately at Starwerks@aol.com please, so we don't clog

the

list) and I'll post it to you.

Another thought: If any of you would like to make your own magnets for

another fandom, project, private use, you could "piggyback" on our order

and

get our discount (but you'd have to act FAST). Let me know _immediately_

if

you're interested in details.
