Procedures: Type in the cell below.
1. Students have read the novel, The Outsiders, they are now going to develop a Plot Analysis.
2. Differentiated instruction will be implemented to accommodate a variety of learning styles. Over the next 2-3 days
the students will be using Concept Maps (from Inspiration 8), Journal Prompts (formulated by the teacher),
Cubing (teacher will organize), and finally students will be assigned into Literature Circles.
3. To apply the story elements to what the students have learned over the course of the novel, they will construct a
Concept Map from Inspiration 8. (See Reproducible Materials) Students will analyze the following literary
elements on the concept map: Main Characters, Plot Sequence, Setting, Point of View, Conflict, Theme, Climax,
Resolution. (Students are already familiar and recognize story / literary elements.
4. Students will organize a Story Elements Cube. (See Reproducible Materials) The students will relate what they
know from the novel and answer teacher-made story element type questions on the cube. Students can color
and decorate the cube for attractiveness.
5. Students will assess their knowledge of The Outsiders, by evaluating teacher made Journal Prompts. Students
are given a list of Journal Prompts in which they will compose a well-organized paragraph for each journal topic
given. The students paragraphs must contain a topic sentence, relevant elaborated detailed sentences (that
support the journal topic, and a conclusion sentence. (See Reproducible Materials for the Journal Prompt
questions).
6. After all Journal Prompts have been answered (some students will move faster/slower than others), the student
will compile all of their paragraphs into a self-made Journal Prompt Creative Writing Booklet. They will do this on
a Power Point. They must have a cover page for the booklet. Each page thereafter will be each Journal Prompt
Question and then there response underneath the question. The students will print out each page of their power
point and compose all of their journals in a folder (with brads). This folder that contains their journal writings will
be used for Literature Circles.
7. The Closing the of the Plot Analysis Activity will be Literature Circles. I will group the students into Literature
Circles in which they will present their Journal Prompt Creative Writing Booklet (to their other group members.
They will take turns going around the circle reading their responses from each journal prompt question and then
discussing the variety of replies that were provided for each topic question. Each member will have a job in the
Literature Circle; there will be four members in each group and I will assign each member as either the Facilitator,
Recorder, Leader, and Listener. The students will be assessed on their performance in the group using a rubric.
