Hometown: Chicago, IL (Wrigleyville)

Undergrad: University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana, Animal Science Major, Class of 2010

Vet med experience and interests: I have experience working with small and exotic animals in a
private practice. I have therefore gained a lot of practical skills, like drawing blood,
administering fluids and injections, monitoring for surgical procedures, and taking x-rays. I also
have experience making diagnostic decisions while volunteering at the wildlife medical clinic for
this past year. I am interested primarily in small animal medicine but enjoyed doing research
with swine and cattle as an undergraduate student. When I am in school, I may find a topic I'd
like to specialize in, but for now I am most passionate about general small animal medicine.

I have always been a heavily technology-focus individual. I worked at tech support at UIS for
three out of the four years I spent there, build my own computers and even started a small
computer building business in Springfield while I still was in undergrad. I love to go to concerts
(although it‘s been a while since I‘ve had the time to make it out to one). Although I‘m pretty
easy to please when it comes to music, I focus primarily on heavy metal and rock. I enjoy
ultimate Frisbee and Frisbee golf. The two authors that I enjoy the most are Jim Butcher and Kim
Harrison, both of whom write long-running fantasy/mystery series. I‘m always up for a movie,
especially a good horror film. Playing Rock Band and other games is a daily occurrence with my
roommates and me.

I watch House, How I Met Your Mother, Mythbusters, Glee, Californication, Top Chef, Human
Target, Lie To Me, and Top Gear. I have never lived in the mid-West or worked with large
animals, so you will have some entertainment during clinicals. I look forward to meeting all of
you!
Ross Feldgreber

Preferred name: Ross

Hometown: Buffalo Grove, IL

Undergrad: University of Miami (FL)

Vet med experience and interests: I have interned at two small animal clinics in Chicago, Family
Pet and Skycrest Animal Clinic, and last summer interned at the University of Illinois large
animal clinic. In Miami, I worked with a veterinarian at a University of Miami Research Center
dealing with all different research animals such as mice, rabbits, pigs, zebra fish, dogs, hamsters,
and chinchillas. As of today my goal is to become a small animal orthopedic specialist, but I am
open to change if I find something I enjoy more. I would like to get a chance to work with some
exotic animals and/or marine animals (more specifically dolphins).

Paragraph or so about yourself: hobbies, favorite TV shows/movie/books, outdoor/indoor

My favorite thing to do in my spare time is to play sports. I grew up playing basketball, tennis,
baseball, volleyball, football and golf. In college I played for the Club Ultimate Frisbee team, as
well as continuing to play other sports in the intramural leagues. The TV shows I enjoy are
anything sports related, Entourage, How I Met Your Mother, The Event and House. When it
comes to books I am pretty much open to anything but I have enjoyed two major series of books:
the Harry Potter series and Girl with the Dragon Tattoo series.
What I want to accomplish by meeting people in class is to form friendships that will endure
through school and beyond. This is not going to be an easy four years and having good friends to
push you through the tough times and be with you during the good times is one key to success.
Also, becoming close with those in school with you will give you great contacts for the rest of
your life in an already close-knit field of veterinary medicine.

I don‘t have many favorite hobbies but I do like relaxing and hanging out with close friends and
I‘m fairly open minded. I enjoy doing activities outdoors. I played tennis all through high school
so I enjoy playing Tennis and most racquet sports. I also enjoy running. I have too many favorite
TV shows to name, I get hooked on them really easily, some of them included: Criminal Minds,
Law and Order: SVU, Veronica Mars, Gilmore Girls, It‘s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and the
League. Recently I have also taken a liking to the new show The Voice. I don‘t watch a whole
lot of movies but one of my favorites is Sweet Home Alabama and of course Marley and Me.
I‘m not really sure what I want to do with a DVM yet but I have always wanted to be a
veterinarian and there‘s not much else I can‘t think of that I would like to say. Can‘t wait to meet
everyone!

Well, besides long walks on the beach…jk.
I am an avid skier (since the grand old age of 1…yes, my dad was insane). I also have taken part
in multiple martial arts styles (so I legitimately am a ninja). I have been birdbanding since I was
10 and if you want to know what birdbanding is, ask me about it, because it would take way too
long to write it here (and I like to talk, so it would *sadly* be killing 2 birds with one stone). My
favorite TV shows are probably Castle and Bones and I have always been a huge fan of The
Princess Bride. I will basically read anything by Jane Austen but I also really enjoyed Water for
Elephants (especially since it mentions Cornell like 500 times). I love meeting new people! I am
especially looking forward to all the fun stories of how everybody ended up at Illinois!

I really like silly jokes. One of my favorites being ‘what’s the difference between roast beef and
pea soup? Answer- you can roast beef but you can’t pee soup.’ I also love playing slug bug and
watching Disney movies. Normally I emphasize my love for animals in the ‘about yourself’
section, but my love for animals is probably understood in this context. However, my love of
animals is pretty important, so I will go ahead and say: I really love ALL animals. I raise border
collies for competition in obedience, agility, and conformation. My 11 year old Border Collie,
Blitz, is really excited to come to school with me. She has obedience and agility titles, but is still
naughty enough to eat out of the garbage can. I am involved as a 4-H volunteer. I teach 4-H
dog classes, judge animal science, and organize a 4-H children’s farm. I also enjoy the great
outdoors. Camping and hiking are two of my favorite ways to spend a weekend. I am really
excited about starting vet school and meeting all of my new classmates.

Fjord horse gelding (Ivan) in English and Western riding, driving, and draft competitions (we
are not exactly what you would call ―elegant,‖ but we try, and we have fun). And of course I am
always happy in a lab with bacteria, beakers, pipettes, and piles of NMR spectral data! I tend
not to watch much TV, but when I do I will watch The Daily Show, House, or Bones. I typically
enjoy all movies, except for horrors. I am really excited about meeting people in our class from
all across the country, from various backgrounds and with different career goals, but who are
all interested in Veterinary Medicine!

I am so excited to start my first year at U of I and cannot wait to meet all of you! Pre-
veterinary students were hard to come by at my undergraduate college and so I‘m looking
forward to being surrounded by those with similar interests. I also love meeting people from all
around, learning about life outside the Southern California suburbs. I suppose to introduce
myself I should list a few of my favorite things: dogs (preferably large breeds), Christmas
decoration, playing the piano, baking, cooking, traveling, shopping, Conan O‘Brien, shows like
Modern Family, Friends, Scrubs, The Office (when Michael Scott was around), and virtually
anything on Bravo, 1990s films like Father of the Bride, While You Were Sleeping and Sleepless
in Seattle, the Lakers, Bulls and Thunder, reading biographies of anybody and everybody, and
discovering new music of any genre and style ranging from mainstream to Bossa Nova. But I
would have to say my ultimate favorite way to spend my time is reading in my backyard,
lounging with my Chow Chow/Australian Shepherd, Lucky Boy. I cannot wait to spend the next
four years working to become a veterinarian alongside you all. See you in the fall!

to work with beef cattle while in the Midwest. This spring and summer I am working in a lab
animal facility, and I‘m really enjoying that. I feel it has a lot in common with food animal
medicine because in both cases it‘s in our best interest to give the animals healthy, low stress
lives in order to maximize ―output,‖ whether it‘s food production or research results. I also
especially enjoy endocrinology, physiology, reproduction, and parasitology. I‘m really looking

and museum production before earning a B.S. in Animal Science and being accepted at Illinois.
My friend says I should combine my experiences and become a circus animal vet! I understand

that Illinois has a strong theatre department, and I look forward to attending their productions.
I also really love hiking and backpacking and am hoping that an Illinois native can help me find
some great outdoor places. My other favorite hobbies include cycling, yoga, cooking, movies,

I enjoy horseback riding, running (when I‘m not injured!), spending time with my large extended
family, being outside, hiking, and hanging out with friends. I also love traveling and going on
adventures. Some of my favorite TV shows are How I Met Your Mother and M*A*S*H. While
I am shy, I do enjoy meeting new people. I especially like to meet new people with different
perspectives from whom I can learn about new things that I was never really aware of.

Outside of classes, I enjoy reading, hiking, camping, and swimming, and spend much of
my time outdoors in the summer. I generally read fantasy novels, science fiction books, or
popular science books. I am also a big hockey fan, and try to keep up with the Blackhawks‘
season. I used to be a gymnast, and still enjoy going to the gym and watching meets. I also am
down to play most IM sports if I can find the time – I thoroughly enjoy wallyball, tennis, and
racquetball. However, I‘ll be working on the joint DVM/PhD degree and don‘t anticipate much
free time in my future. I hope to get to know all of my classmates well over the upcoming year,
and look forward to making at least a few close friends who share some of my diverse interests

I like to read a lot (mostly sci-fi and fantasy, but the relatively classy kind: Stephen King, Robert
Jordan, Jacqueline Carey, Patrick Rothfuss, etc), and I like to play chess when I can find
someone else who enjoys it too. I also like playing video games, but I‘m not very good at them.
My favorite shows are House, NCIS, Criminal Minds, The Daily Show, The Colbert Report,
Burn Notice, and Buffy (even though it‘s no longer on). I used to swim and play water polo in
high school, but stopped during college. I also love music; I‘ve been in choirs for 12 years, and I
think I‘m going to really miss it. I also used to play flute and piano (I‘m no longer proficient at
either of them, though). I‘m really excited to meet people interested in vet med, because I was
the only person from my very small, liberal arts college to apply to vet school. It‘s been a bit
lonely, so I can‘t wait to meet people who would actually enjoy hearing/exchanging stories about
crazy clinic experiences.

I grew up on a family owned farrow to finish swine operation, where my interest in
livestock care was initially sparked. As a child, I was very involved in 4-H where I showed,
swine, beef, dairy, and goats. Additionally, in high school I was extremely involved in
volleyball, dance, several clubs, and FFA where I served as a State FFA Officer in 2006. My
hobbies include raising and showing cattle and swine. I enjoy spending time outdoors;
swimming, biking, camping, and jogging. My favorite TV show is Grey‘s Anatomy. I am very
excited to meet the members of the Class of 2015, and to learn about their interests within the

I enjoy sports of all types, but especially volleyball and softball. I do not watch much TV,
but when I do it usually is Law & Order: SVU, Forensic Files, or some other criminal themed
show. I love horror movies, but not the cheesy ones. Most commonly you will find me reading
though. I am not extremely picky with books but tend to find myself reading more fantasy based
novels than anything and if there is a series of books it is even better. Sometimes I scrapbook,
but I also enjoy just walking around and talking on nice days to get some fresh air. I suck at
video games, but I always make attempts to play them. Of course spending time with my pets is
a must! I am told that I am very bubbly and happy go lucky, so I guess I like to see others happy
and look forward to meeting my classmates. Overall, I think that is me in a nutshell!

Most of my experience is with small animals, but I‘m more interested in large animal medicine. I
did quite a bit of volunteer work with the large animal clinic during my undergrad years and I
found that I enjoyed this area of veterinary medicine the most. I tried to get a taste of as many
areas of vet med as possible so I could eliminate some of the choices before I attended school.
While I find veterinary research interesting and important, I realized that it wasn‘t cut out for me.
I spent a year working for the UIC toxicology research lab and I quickly came to terms with the
fact that it simply something I could never find myself truly enjoying. I‘d also like to get more
acquainted with exotic medicine. I have some reptile and bird experience, but I‘m a rookie when
it comes to non-mammal animals.

Dance, Grey‘s Anatomy, the Bravo Housewives series, Glee, Dancing with the Stars, The
Bachelorette/Bachelorette, Keeping up with the Kardashians, Gossip Girl, Modern Family, Say
Yes to the Dress, Dr. Phil, Oprah, Desperate Housewives, and many more! As you can see I love

Coldplay makes beautiful music, True Blood is not just a vampire show and the best part of
hockey, aside from the fights, is the sound of the skates cutting ice. Batman is so much better
than Superman because he can acutally give hugs and not crush people in the process. I want to
change the world and I want the world to change me. I like boys who row crew, my horse
Lincoln has taught me the most about growing up and overcoming the challenges of life and
secretly, ninja assassins are the best worst idea ever. Offroading isn‘t just for the boys and
everyone should get dirty, it‘s good for you. Faith is a large part of my life in the sense that I am
thankful for all I have experienced and the wonderful people I have met. I have jumped out of
airplanes, dove down to the ocean floor, skied off the back of the Grand Teton mountains, and
drove across the country to pick up the pieces from tornadoes and hurricanes; through all those
events the only thing I‘ve ever been sure of is that I want to save lives, I want to practice
veterinary medicine. The world wouldn‘t be the same without the animals we share it with, the
companions we love within our homes, and the creatures whose beauty and strength we admire; I

play in our environment is irreplaceable.

I grew up in Colorado and have journeyed away twice before – as a hiatus from
undergrad, I moved to Idaho to train event horses and start youngsters then I spent a year doing
national service with AmeriCorps NCCC. However, heading to Illinois for school will be the
first time I‘ve really packed up and taken everything with me. Although my monkeys (Rudy, my
momma‘s boy Plott hound mutt, and Cooper, my crazy old lady Australian Shepherd) are
traveling east with me, I‘m sure that there will be days that I miss the Colorado mountains and
sunshine. Moving here from out-of-state, I‘d not only like to make some friends and study
buddies with similar professional interests, but also some to have a good time with too.
AmeriCorps was by far one of the best things that I have ever done; it didn‘t only give me
the break from school to refuel that I needed but it also introduced me to the world of disaster
relief and emergency response as part of the response to Hurricanes Charlie, Francis, Ivan and
Jeanne. I‘m looking forward to vet school not only for becoming a vet in and of itself but also
for combining my future with my passion for emergency relief. Yes, I know we are all bleeding
hearts, but mine gets extra mushy for those animals caught in the midst of the worst natural and
manmade devastations.
As far as the fun stuff goes, sitting on a horse in the middle of nowhere is my personal
paradise. As a kid, I did Pony Club and hunter/jumper horse shows. I love to event now, but I‘m
pretty content sitting in any kind of saddle. I also really enjoy kayaking – even though I‘m from
a white water state, I‘ve always been more into ―quiet water‖ kayaking. Last spring, I got to
spend an amazing week sea kayaking in Costa Rica. Lastly, I‘m pretty much a country girl at
heart. Although I‘ll dance to just about any kind of music, there‘s usually a country station on
the radio in my car and I love to kick up my heels at a honky-tonk.

Hello. My name is Leslie Frailey. I‘m a 2010 graduate of the University of Illinois in Urbana-
Champaign with an integrative biology degree and chemistry minor. In my spare time I love to
read, watch movies, and hang out with my family and friends. My family is very important to
me. I have two sisters, a mom, a beagle and an adorable nephew who will be three in September.
My father passed away from cancer when I was 17 years old and I miss him every day.
I enjoy working out, the outdoors, and all things nature and wildlife. I also have a love/hate
relationship with running. A couple of friends and I ran the Chicago Half Marathon last
September and it was a lot of fun.
I‘m looking forward to starting vet school, learning new things, exploring the exciting world of
veterinary medicine and getting to know all of you.

somewhere for the night or just staying in and catching up. My favorite books and movies tend
to be of the sci-fi and fantasy genres, with The Lord of the Rings being my absolute favorite, but
I enjoy a wide variety. For TV shows, I usually like to watch police procedurals and
action/comedy, but I also love to sit down and watch some Food Network, Discovery, or even

I am an avid Frolfer (Frisbee Golf) and love playing any and all sports, including tennis,
basketball, bowling and fishing. I am always looking for a new book to read, and I am currently
in the middle of Stieg Larsson‘s mystery trilogy. My favorite authors include the satirical David
Sedaris and Chuck Palahniuk, and I am a firm believer in a book that makes you laugh! I was a
Nic Cage fan until this past decade (sigh) and now am reluctantly becoming (for works other
than Twilight) a Robert Patterson fan….I know, I lay it on me. I enjoy cooking and watching the
Food Network Channel (RIP Good Eats!), but my favorite shows consist of Fringe and Mad
Men. I am pretty much a fish during the summer, constantly finding myself in a body of water,
whether it‘s skiing, knee boarding, boating, or lounging in a tube. I am very excited to get to
know my fellow classmates and am looking forward to pulling countless numbers of all-nighters!
I hope to build many friendships along the way and can‘t wait to take on these next 4 years!

I like to do just about anything that has to do with animals. When I am at home on the
farm, I spend a lot of time outside doing chores like milking cows, taking care of calves or sheep,
working in the garden, or even driving tractors. I don‘t watch a lot of TV, but I like Nat Geo and
the Discovery channel. I grew up listening to country music, but love listening to most music
now. I like to read, especially fantasy books, but usually don‘t make enough time to read much. I
love camping, biking, fishing, and lots of other outdoor activities. I can‘t wait to start meeting

I love to read, mostly fiction. Favorites include Jane Eyre, The Maltese Falcon, and the Harry
Potter series, of course. I am really into film, watching movies both for enjoyment and for
analysis. Film noir is my favorite genre, but I‘m really not picky. I like to swim (I‘ve been a
lifeguard for 6 years); not competitively or anything, just for fun. Singing is one of my favorite
activities and I have a huge passion for musical theatre. As far as TV goes, I like NCIS, Glee,
How I Met Your Mother, and Family Guy.

I try to be open-minded, accepting, and inquisitive. From meeting you all, I hope to gain not only

Generally when I meet people and they ask me what I do my response is, ―I am a reformed
banker.‖ It is a good description that helps to bridge the gap of what I did, a commercial real
estate lender, and what I want to do, be a veterinarian. It is always interesting to see people‘s
reactions to my career change and field all their questions. I grew up in Northern California and
completed my undergraduate degree at UC Davis. After finishing my degree I moved to New
York City and began my career in real estate as well as earned my masters degree from New
York University. Eventually I moved to Chicago and a few years later I began to pursue my
second career in the sciences. Since my early retirement from banking I have spent a lot of time
with my two Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Chuck Norris and Margaret Thatcher, who enjoy
teaching me how to be a good obedience and agility handler. I also enjoy helping out with the
local cavalier rescue, gardening, read fiction novels, spending time outdoors, and finding new
challenges. I have an eclectic taste in entertainment due mostly to my family being from the UK
and consequently have a quirky British sense of humor, enjoy a good cup of tea, and ruined my
joints in college playing rugby.

I am a very active person, and I can almost always be found doing some sort of outdoor activity.
I love to horseback ride and own a horse back home. I started riding horses before I could walk,
and have been avidly working with horses for almost twenty years. In addition, I love to bike and
go hiking. Also, I enjoy going to the beach and partaking in beach activities from sailing to even
kayaking. During the winter, I am a Grey‘s Anatomy and Glee feign. During the summer I am a
fan of So You Think You Can Dance. I love spending time with my dog and in my free time we
can be found hanging out in the sun reading and lounging. I cannot wait to meet the people in my
incoming class. I am excited to talk about all of our common interests and hope to make some
life-long friends.

Hi I‘m Nichole. I am one of those people who find it a little hard to talk about themselves, but
I‘ll try. I would consider myself a fun, somewhat outgoing person with a great sense of humor. I
am also a person that doesn‘t really have favorites in terms of books, movies and music. I pretty
much like a wide range of musical and movie genres. However, two movie genres stick out
above the rest and that would have to be comedy and horror, which is weird because they are
kind of opposites. My favorite color is lime green, which becomes more and more apparent the
more you get to know me. Enough with the favorites… Oh… if I could do anything other than
this, it would be to travel the world, exploring and helping other people. Oh, and if I could be
any animal, I would be a cheetah. I know it‘s obvious as to why I chose the cheetah. They‘re like
foreign cars; they have both beauty and speed. Yep. As far as meeting people in my class, I‘m
super excited; I hope to really get to know a few of my classmates, to learn from them and to
build some long lasting friendships. I hope that didn‘t sound too cliché or cheesy, and I hope this
whole paragraph wasn‘t too random.

cooking, and reading! Aside from Animal Planet, I’m hooked to the history and discovery
health channels. I my favorite book is the Glass Castle and I love the Clive Cussler series. I
have a bunch of favorite movies- too many to write down! Although my most favorite movie
is the Shawshank Redemption, hands down. I like to go out with friends, try new foods, and
explore. I also brew and bottle my own beer from home.
