Warm Up 2/7/08
• On a separate piece of paper write a
question you have about yesterdays
lesson.
• Examples:
– I didn’t understand… Can you tell me more
about it?
– What is….?
Organ Doctor
Male & Female
Reproductive Systems
Sexual Reproduction
• Involves the production of eggs by the
female and sperm by the male. The egg
and sperm join together during
fertilization.
• When fertilization occurs, a fertilized egg,
or zygote, is produced.
• Q: How many of you have more
than one parent?
– then, everyone in this room is a product
of sexual reproduction

Characteristics of Sexual
Reproduction
• Requires a female and male
parent
• Q: Why do we need more than 1
parent?
½ + ½ = 1
Characteristics of Sexual
Reproduction
• Requires a female and male
parent
• Each parent donates ½ of the
Chromosomes/Genes/DNA
• So, by what we’ve discussed, in
sexual reproduction “mom”
donates half, and “dad” donates
half. How does this happen?
Characteristics of Sexual
Reproduction
• Requires a female and male
parent
• Each parent donates ½ of the
Chromosomes/Genes/DNA
• Requires fertilization - the
combining of an egg and a sperm
• Now, nine months later, you come
out kicking and screaming (and
dancing). To which parent do you
look exactly alike? How about
your siblings? Do you look exactly
alike them?

Uncomfortable Words?
• Penis • Vagina
• Testis • Ovary
• Scrotum • Uterus
• Sperm tube • Cervix
• Gland • Egg tube
Male Reproductive System
• Specialized to
produce sperm and
the hormone
testosterone.
• Organs of the Male
Reproductive System
• Testes
• Scrotum
• Penis
Testes
• The testes are inside a sac called the
scrotum.
• The testes consist of clusters of hundreds of
tiny coiled tubes and the cells between the
tubes. Sperm are formed inside the tubes.
• Testes also produce testosterone: a hormone
that controls the development of physical
characteristics in mature men…like what?
The path of Sperm Cells
• Once sperm form in the testes, they mix
with fluids produce by nearby glands.
This mixture is called semen.
• Semen contains 5-10 million sperm per
drop!
• Semen leaves the body through an organ
called the penis. The tube it travels
through is called the urethra.
Roles of Female Reproductive
System
• Produce eggs
• Produce estrogen (a female hormone)
• Nourish a developing baby
– If the egg has been fertilized
Female Reproductive Organs
Organs of the Female
Reproductive System
• Ovaries
• Fallopian tubes
• Uterus
• Vagina
The journey of an egg cell!
Ovaries
• They produce eggs
• There are two of them located just below
the waste.
• Produces estrogen: a female hormone
that causes the development of some
female characteristics
– Breasts
– Widening of hips
Fallopian Tubes
• Each ovary is located near a fallopian tube
• AKA oviducts
• Fallopian Tubes are passage ways for
eggs to get to the uterus.
Uterus
• Hollow muscular organ about the size of a
pear.
• Fertilized eggs attach to the wall and
grow into babies.
• Non-fertilzed eggs break down in the
uterus and pass out of the body through
the opening at the base called the cervix.
Vagina
• A muscular passageway leading to the
outside of the body.
• AKA: Birth canal
• Why? This is where the baby leaves a
woman’s body.
The Menstrual Cycle
• The monthly cycle of changes that occur in the
female reproductive system.
• During the menstrual cycle, an egg develops in
an ovary at the same time, the uterus prepares
for the arrival of an embryo.
• An egg is released once a month once a
woman’s reproductive system reaches
maturity…usually during the teenage years.
Stages of the Menstrual Cycle
Look on page 231 of text.
• Ovulation: The process in which an egg is
released.
• Once an egg is released it can be fertilized for
the next few days if sperm are present in the
fallopian tube.
• If the egg is not fertilized, it begins to break
down.
• The extra blood and tissue pass out of the body
through the vagina in a process called
menstruation.
